<<I will not judge him for giving into his emotions from time to time, and just because he is not a doctor does not mean he didn't at least try to help you. Which apparently he did, as you are not dead. His loyalty to Prince Ossanlin can not be questioned at this point. You would rather be with Corliss, who obviously holds little loyalty to our Prince, if any, over someone who obviously is loyalty, and may be hiding contempt fo you under what is obviously some effort to help?>>

He didn't say what he was thinking of her. There was every chance that she was just insane. An honorable Warrior, yes, but insane nonetheless.

<<You are defending a Yeerk, soldier,>> Efaen says, not hiding the sneer in her voice. <<Do you understand that? Temrash, Corliss, they are all one and the same. Filthy parasites who seek only to control and conquer. The only difference between the two is that Corliss, as of yet, has not attempted to physically harm me. Do you really think Temrash's kindness an attempt at bridging our species differences? Are you that foolish? Do you not see that he is manipulating you? Of course he feigns loyalty to a Prince as powerful as Ossanlin. He is a former Visser; he understands power. He will use you and he will use Prince Ossanlin, all with the guise of friendliness. And you, apparently, are playing right into his trap.>>

She eyes Corliss' weapon warily for a moment, before continuing. <<These rebel Yeerks detest me openly. They have minimal resources and they are desperate. It will be much easier for me to use them than it will be for me to use Temrash. My entire purpose in joining the rebellion is to undermine them, to prove that they are truly allied with the Empire and report my findings to the Andalite military. I cannot do that from another Yeerk ship.>>

<<They are not the same. Just as we are not the same. They are not of one mind. Just paying attention to them will tell you as much. If temrash wanted to use Prince Ossanlin, he'd already be a controller. Captured and taken somewhere that Temrash could do whatever he wanted to our Prince. When you have something valuable in the palm of your hand, and no one has the ability to stop you from taking it, there has to be a really good reason not to take it. What more could Temrash gain from an alliance with Prince Ossanlin, than a host that can tear holes in space and manipulate time itsself?>>

<<And do you think that Temrash would rush in, blades blazing to capture someone with such power?>> Efaen scoffs. <<You saw Prince Ossanlin in action yourself; anyone with an iota of sense would be hesitant in attempting to subdue such power. If Temrash were an intelligent Yeerk he would not seek merely to capture Prince Ossanlin, but to make our Prince believe that the Yeerk is fighting for the same cause, that he is an ally. I believe you are overlooking an essential component of Yeerk physiology, Claxter. They are subtle and manipulative by nature. They do not rely on brute force to achieve their goals.>>

Claxter decided not to argue further. This was a touchy subject for her, and arguing would only cause friction between them. There was still the matter at hand. Corliss cared nothing for her as a person, and the thought of him taking her to be enslaved just made him frustrated.

<<I understand that you are concerned,>> Efaen says, softening slightly at Claxter's silence. <<But I assure you, that my actions are in the best interest of the People. I will not fall under Yeerk sway. My days as a Controller are over, I assure you of that. I am doing this for us, for our People.>>

Mar slowly stood up from his place, testing how solid his footing was. The truth of the matter was that he was as confused as Elayne: he had no idea what his place was in this war.

'I always saw mortal affairs from either the outside or the front line,' muttered Mar with a grin. 'Now I am the fool in the middle. Mm, oh well. There are so many here who are rich with corruption. I will find my position yet.'

After a few minutes of argument, Salem and Al had reached a conclusion about what to do with the Malleon that'd been placed aboard Corliss's ship. They turned and walked back towards the group, Al with a smirk, Salem with a bit of a sickened look on his face.

Al took a place beside Jasper and nudged his shoulder. "Ready to watch Salem get reamed? This oughtta be good," he said to Jasper in a stage whisper, loudly enough to be overheard by both Salem and Corliss.

Salem shot Al a quick glare and took a breath. He quickly looked around and sized up the situation. It looked as if the two Andalites were locked in a private thought-speech conversation. It occurred to Salem for a moment that the female held a proud posture that usually denoted a Warrior among males. He might have to speak to her when he got the chance. Illim and Corliss still seemed quite tense. Normally he'd let this go and simply wait for a better opportunity to speak with them, but he couldn't actually see Corliss becoming less tense until his ship was taken care of.

"Corliss," he started, hesitating only briefly before continuing, "The thing on your ship... it's intelligent. A species of microbe called Malleon. The individual microbes have no real capacity for thought, but they've got... I guess you'd call it a collective consciousness. The entire swarm can think as one mind."

He stopped, and looked from Corliss to Illim, trying to gauge their reactions before continuing, "I have a large colony living within my own ship's systems. It's beneficial to both of us. My ship supplies them with energy, and in return, they're able to manipulate and repair the ship's systems on a microscopic level. I'll never need to repair or replace another component. Right now, the small culture aboard your ship is one with the hive mind on mine. I don't think there's a limit to how far apart they can be and still hear each other."

He took another breath. Here goes. "As an offer of... trust between me and your Rebellion, I'd like to offer to leave them aboard your ship. I'd set you up to be able to communicate with them. I'll let them know that you're friends, and they... should agree to learn your ship, and keep it in good repair." He swallowed and looked back and forth. He knew that, in theory, he'd still be in charge of the Malleon if the Rebellion decided to betray him or sell him out as Temrash had done, but on the off-chance that Corliss agreed, he'd still be taking a huge risk.

"What do you think?"

<<Perhaps,>> Efaen says, smiling tightly. <<No doubt he would understand the importance of this mission I am preparing to undertake. Now, if you'll excuse me. I require reprieve.>>

She fixes Corliss with a stalk eye, noting his weapon, but shrugging its presence off. <As I said before, Yeerk,> she reminds him. <We will leave upon my orders, after I have spoken with and gained clearance from Prince Ossanlin.> She turns and begins walking back towards the bar, determined not to be stopped this time around.

"And these intelligent microbes, they would be able to trace my ship's location, wouldn't they?" Corliss demands, glaring at Salem.

He shifts his attention back to Efaen as the Andalite girl starts to walk away.

"I don't take orders from you, Andalite!" he calls, keeping the weapon trained on Efaen's retreating backside.  "Get back here or I swear I'll drag you back!"

Claxter restrained himself from just lopping Corliss' arm off. With Efaen wanting him to let Corliss attack her if he chose, Claxter stormed off to his ship. It was the only thing that would keep him from getting violent with the Yeerk. If only he could do something. If only his prince would wake up and come out, and put Corliss in his place.

<I do not believe that you will, Yeerk,> Efaen says simply, not pausing in her saunter.

Corliss's question caught Salem by surprise. He'd been so concerned with what it meant to offer the microbes to Corliss that he hadn't considered the obvious first question.

"Um..." he stammered, unsure of the answer. He looked over at Al, but Al just grinned and shrugged, then waved Salem's attention back towards Corliss in a way that clearly said leave me out of this.

"They... might," he conceded. "I'm not actually sure. I've never tried to have them do something like that, but... they must have a way of locating other members of their species, right?" He shrugged, "I can ask them, if you like. Might take some explaining. And we'll have to make sure they agree to this deal as well." He pulled his communicator from his pocket, prepared to call the Malleon aboard his ship at Corliss's say-so.

Corliss, furious at Efaen's dismissal of his threat, ignores Salem entirely as he aims his Dracon.

"That's too bad," he says coldly, firing the weapon on stun at Efaen's retreating back.
