((Sorry for the delay, guys...we're at Luke/Ossanlin's house right now, so we have internet for tonight :) ))

Corliss watches Terenia, uncrossing his arms.

"I was happy, for a moment there, too," he says quietly.  "We both were.  I'm sorry too, Terenia.  I'm sorry that I can't trust you anymore."

He turns and walks toward the wall, muttering the command for the hatch to open.

Andromeda walked back over and sat next to Morgan. She was looking around the bar at the various people inside.

Gaz was watching Fletcher, waiting for a reply.

"You haven't answered me yet," Gaz said accusingly. "Answer me and don't you dare lie."

"At first," Fletcher replied after another moment of silence.

Gaz's eyes narrowed.

Al smirked at Keshin. "Do you Yeerks just not know how to loosen up?" He whispered to her. He then grinned and yelled out to the bar in general, "next round's on me too! This place needs to have a bit more fun!"

Salem glared Al and said through gritted teeth, "That's my money you're spending."

Al rolled his eyes "That you'll probably never see again. Learn to relax a bit, Salem." He said the name 'Salem' tauntingly, drawing it out.

Salem sighed. He knew better than to let Al be social. He turned back to Silver. "You don't look much like Morgan..."

"I would have told you," Terenia says pitifully as the hatch opens under his command, "I just...was waiting to see whether they-" she cuts off, staring at his back.

<Whether they survived,> Efaen finishes Terenia's thought, and the words sear the inside of her brain like a live wire. Terenia jerks, trying to move away from the truth, but of course she cannot.

"I'm sorry," Terenia repeats, knowing that no matter how many times she says the worn-out phrase it will make no difference now. The damage has been done, and Terenia has no idea how to fix it.

<You can't,> Efaen hisses, <He's through with you. And now when Myitt and the others return he will not support you.>

<Idiot,> Terenia snaps back, <We needed his support. We needed him to keep us together. Now we have nothing. No one. I'll be forced out of your head and stomped on while you'll be forced into some sort of Andalite version of the Witness Protection Program!>

<I do not believe that will happen,> Efaen responds stiffly, <Captain Ossanlin will respect my wishes. We do not need this filthy Yeerk to aide us. We should be placing our hopes in the Andalites.>

"You are impossible!" Terenia cries out loud, her voice scathing as Efaen's goading warps her depression into fury. She slams her fists onto the metal floor, ignoring the sharp sting that the impact brings.

Corliss pauses as Terenia apologizes, but he is already out of the hatchway and walking along the gravel path back to the bar by the time Terenia's fury builds into an outburst.

<That went well,> Mike says flatly after a few seconds of thoughtful silence.

<I can't believe she would put their lives in danger,> Corliss sighs.  <I'm the one who should've bloody well known better.  I just hope they return safely.  And soon.>

Temrash was standing casually in the shade of the building where he saw Corliss coming down the path.

"Hey Corliss! Nice seeing you again!" He said, walking up to him. "You look troubled."

"Yeah, Temrash, hello," says Corliss distractedly as he pushed open the bar doors.  "I'd rather not say.  No matter.  How've you been?"  He holds the door a bit before walking over to the bar, not waiting for a response.

Temrash was going to tell corliss about the trip, but it seems he wasn't really that interested as he just passed by. He followed Corliss into the bar.

"Rather not say? Have you heard about Myitt? Or is that why you're worried? She hasn't called. If there's a chance they've been spotted, I could probably call my allies. They may know something."

Elayne frowned and shifted her weight as she crossed her left leg over her right. Nibbling on her bottom lip, she looked as awkward as Trey. "Well," she said finally, pausing an uncomfortably long time before speaking, "it was a disorganized mess, to be honest. We pulled together rallies that were always at least intended to be peaceable; we lobbied, picketed, gave interviews.... It was exciting. New members would join us daily, at first. Some of them were Controllers, and some of them were former Controllers. We had very few members who, like me, had never had a Yeerk in their heads."

She sighed and swapped her legs, looking down at the stained tabletop. "After the protests became more violent, there was a backlash against us. Former supporters left us. There were more death threats. The government wasn't protecting us, much less supporting us."

Elayne stopped herself, her cheeks flushing as she looked at Trey. "Does that answer your question? What did you want to know?"

Terenia's glare followed Corliss' back as he left, and then remained fixed on the empty space that remained. She could see the ominous shadows of various ship hulls, and beyond that a few faint stars twinkled. The sight of them did not help Terenia's mood. The stars were the source of every one of her problems, piled one on top of the other for year after year.

"Computer, close hatch," she snapped angrily. The ship responded without complaint, sealing off the outside world. Terenia pushed herself to her feet and began to pace, her left hand playing anxiously with her Dracon holster as she tried to plan for the worst. Efaen offered no insight, convinced that her beloved Andalites would save the day, a fact that only intensified Terenia's pacing.

----

"Well..." Trey paused again, shifting forward in his seat and moving his arms so that his elbows rested on the table. He looked at Elayne very seriously, as though sizing her up to see whether she was worthy of the knowledge that he was about to impart upon her. When he finally does speak he has lowered his voice, though he knows Mar can still hear. It comes out as the deep rasp of a boy trying and failing at sounding like a grown man.

"I want to start my own rebellion."

((Warning: I wrote this post while extremely sleep-deprived. XD ))

Keshin rolls his eyes. It seems as though this individual named Al is the comic relief of the duo. <And he seems to have no regard for either his or Salem's safety.>

<Which makes you kinda wonder what they're doin' together. And are we gonna check how wanted these guys are? They seemed pretty up there judgin' by the soldiers, but we dunno who wants 'em.>

<No. Al may have a point. Besides, we still know nothing whatsoever about them. Do you really want to hand them over to the authorities without learning anything?>

<..............nah. Let's do it.>

Keshin then smiles at Al and states, "We're not all stuck-up jerks. Just most of us. It comes with growing up in a repressive unpleasant culture. Where in the Kandrona are you two idiots from, anyway? Originally, I mean. You've probably been on the run a while."
*******************************************************************************
Mar resists the urge to roll his eyes when Elayne describes what her movement was like. It sounds exactly like the type of grassroots rebellion that tends to wreak havoc on his plans. Yet the movement did make my sweet Elayne what she is. As much as I am loathe to compliment such campaigns, I must seem supportive of Elayne.

Mar puts his hand on Elayne's shoulder and says warmly, "You did well enough, Elayne. Although there was a backlash, your people have been alerted to the issue. You may have done more for the Yeerks than you realize by moving forward with your efforts."
