Sam walks a little bit faster.  Damnit, where was the nearest bus stop?

"Hold on, Jas, if I can't shake these people I'll have to run for it, you'll need to turn back soon," she whispers, out of breath, hoping Jas can still hear her.

Torrence
By Kasey's House

"Yeah, it is." Torrence agreed with the girl.  She took Kasey's advice and didn't seem too eager, even glancing as though appraising the current weather conditions.

Turning her head, she noted Alice- in her other form.

"Hey Cherise," Torrence made up a fake name for the stranger's benefit. "- look at Kit go!"
She indicates Kasey pulling after the girl.

"Sorry," She smiles at the girl, giving Kasey her head to follow after her. " - did you just eat or something? She likes the smell of you."

Christina
Woods

<You think whoever stayed there belongs to that ship?>  Christina scurried up a nearby log, keeping watch as Reece finished demorphing.

<That's a weird way to transport, you'd think it'd have a cloaking like the Klingons or something.>

Near Reece and Christina, there was a rustling in the bushes.

A dark skinned young man rushes at Reece. He is sweaty from exertion, his clothes are muddy and torn and his hands are muddy as though he's been digging in the ground.

"They shot Jeth-!"

The man suddenly stops speaking, eying Reece wide eyed. "You're not the other guy.  What are you doing here?" Alec steps back from Reece, looking flighty.

Reece holds up his hands, partially out of surprise, partially to show he's unarmed. "Whoa whoa there, cowboy. You know first impressions? They're everything." Reece parts his lips into a cheesy but warm smile and extends his hand to be shaken. "Name's uh, Russ. My friend here-" he motions to Christina and tries not to wince "-I consider myself a friend of all woodland creatures, see. We were just poking around here, you know, exploring some forestry. In bike shorts." Reece looks the boy up and down. "Now, what's got you so jumpy? And soiled?"

Alec  frowned at 'Russ's' hand, wiping his hand on his pants before reaching over to shake his hand.

Alec appeared in his late twenties, was dark skilled and wore his hair close cropped. His ethnicity was possibly African American or perhaps mixed.  He wore Dickies pants and a black button up shirt.

"Uh, sorry. I thought you were someone else. Someone who was here before. We split up."  He looks uneasily at the sky.

"I was being chased. I fell."

Christina

<Friend of all woodland creatures?> Christina laughed mentally. <You're a fruit loop.  But hey, check out his pants.  There's an old paint stain on the left leg.> She pointed out. Sure enough, there was a gray colored paint stain on the black Dickies the man wore.

<Guy in the vid had the same pants.>

Sam glances back at Torrence, blinking.  "Oh, um, yeah, she probably just smells my cats."  She smiles sheepishly.  "Have a good night."  She quickens her step.

"Chased?" Reece asks, concerned. He looks over Alec's shoulder into the deep woods, and then back to Alec. "What for? You don't need help slugging some thugs, do you? Making fisticuffs with some, uh, burly dudes?"

"No!" The man exclaimed hurriedly. "I don't want to involve you, man. I uh, think they stopped chasin' me."

He says this unconvincingly, glancing over his shoulder.

"Any way, I should find my friends. You see a white girl with blonde hair and a guy with long hair, Sorta light colored?"

Reece and Christina recognize these descriptions as fitting the two from the video... The other two- this guy is quite similiar to the third guy, actually.

"Yeah! Actually, I think I did," Reece offers. "This is such a crazy coincidence- my mom actually suckered them into joining us inside for a, uh, Tupperware party." Reece laughs. "Small world, huh? Want me to show you the way?"

<Torrence...I think you should follow her for a bit, but lag behind. Maybe I can break loose once she's far enough away, and I can trail her. She seems like she's up to something. Do you think she has the device?> Kasey questions as she continues to sniff at the ground, and wag her tail.

While I was directing my sensors at the lady, I compared her with the woman in the video - She was definitely the same person, even wearing the same clothing. As my sensors locked on, the parabolic microphones in my 'ears', that worked like directional dog-ears, picked up part of what she was whispering:
"Ho____Ja__ if I can't ____________ I'll have to run for it, you'll need to turn back____..."

I glanced at Kasey-Lab: She was bound to have heard part of the whisper too, but maybe not the same part as I heard...

At that moment, Torrence addressed me by a fake name, then said something I could twist my response to so that I could get a message to them about what I'd heard the Samatha lady whisper;

"Hehe, yeah! I can tell she wants to run, and soon!" I responded with matched enthusiasm. Reggie was, of course, a MALE Labrador: Samantha probably hadn't looked closely at the dog, leastways not close enough to tell male from female, but hopefully Torrence and Kasey would pick up that by 'she' I secretly meant the woman.

An idea came to me:
"Hi Sam!" I called in a convincing 'I recognize you' tone of voice, "Long-time no-see, girl! ... You do recognize me, don't you? From high school? I sure as heck remember you, Samantha Wagner!"
I put on a friendly, nostalgic expression of recognizing an old friend from a long time ago, for the sole benefit of Samantha if/when she turned to try and recognize me.

Ah acting... Where would we Chee be without the ability to pretend to be something/someone we are not? And we'd had SO much practise at it over the millenia...

Jas coiled tighter...the dog probably smelled him inside the clothes...he was just waiting for them to ask about the big pile of clothes in Sam's arms... 'why won't they leave us alone...or do they know something?'  This was getting out of hand.  Jas' mind raced hard...how could anyone recognize Sam?  They knew her name...could it be someone from the Sharing?  <Hey, Sam...that chick calling your name...she's not from the Sharing is she?>  Worry spread through his thought like fire, causing the last part about the Sharing to be a bit louder than a whisper, of course that didn't matter with this thought-stuff did it?

Back at a whisper, Jas continued with Sam.  <Look..uhm...I don't know Sam, I don't know!  God I need a drink.  Hey, wait, maybe you should find the nearest bar or something, maybe they won't come in after you?>  It was a weak ploy, but maybe it would buy them some more time...

Sam shook her head slightly--she couldn't reply to Jas right now, her attention was focused on the girl who apparently was an old classmate.  Fantastic, wasn't high school reunion a year or more away?  She did not have time for this now.

"Hey!  Uh," Sam begins, narrowing her eyes.  The girl almost did look familiar.  What was her name?  Alison?  Amy?  "How are you, hun?  Tell the family I said hi!  Say, do you know where the nearest bus stop is?"  She hefted the clothes and, reluctantly, stopped walking to get some answers.

<The closest stop is about a mile from here. She's carrying something alive. I can smell it. It's hidden in those clothes. > Kasey responds, realizing that Torrence and Alice probably have no idea where the nearest stop is.

"Oh, I'm sorry but I only just moved back into the neighbourhood, and I generally ride my scooter anyway. Tammy might know though! - She's been here forever and I think she still rides good ol' public-transport." I said, with a wink in Torrence's direction. "Would you like to pet Kit? - Very friendly; Doesn't bite." For further reassurance of the dog's friendly nature, I leant down and petted Kasey-Lab on the head and scratched behind an ear. Dogs love that, and I wanted my best friend Kasey to experiience what it means to them when someone does it.

Perhaps if Samantha took up the offer, Kasey would pick up more info about her... On the other hand, closer proximity between the two might lead her to notice a certain clue that the dog is no ****. Either way, the invitation should hopefully delay her a little longer, maybe make her less likely to make a break for it.

Kasey thought-spoke privately to us, informing us that Sam carried something alive. Maybe, with a bit of luck, she might get a chance to identify this passenger she carried...

Jas froze as he sensed Sam coming to a halt.  He knew she couldn't afford to talk to him without sounding crazy or letting them know someone else was there.  He feared to even think at her now...it just didn't seem like he could get away with it without everyone else hearing.  His tail vibrated a bit against the clothes, an instinct-driven response to nervousness.  He clamped down again on his snake-mind but the vibrating only lessened, it did not stop.  It seemed there was limited control in certain circumstances.  Troubling as that was, it seemed less troubling than the people talking to Sam.  It didn't add up, something wasn't right, but he dared not speak to Sam again.  He shouldn't have morphed...he should've just stayed in human form.  This was insane, what could he do, pretend to be her pet snake that she happened to be carrying around in her pile of guy's clothing?  He hoped Sam thought of something soon...
