"Don't bother," Myitt sighs.  "I'll survive."  She eyes Salem curiously.  "I know we didn't exactly get off on the best of starts.  What were you running from?"

---

Corliss smiles ruefully.  "Well, this is a place where people seem to go to get 'far away'."

Ossanlin glances at Claxter before returning his eyes to Efaen.  <<I do not see a solution.  I was worried that the death of Tamora would...compromise. ..Terenia.>>  Ossanlin chooses his words carefully.  He didn't want to put Efaen off, but also wanted to avoid harming Terenia further.  <<Unfortunately if you return without a Yeerk...well I do not wish to know whom they would infest you with or what they would use you for.  You would be a second Abomination.  Perhaps not as publicized as I'm sure Visser 3 would not want his conquest to be dimmed by another Andalite controller.>>

Ossanlin sighs a bit.  <<Myitt and Corliss know much more about memory dumps than I.  I personally know of no way to circumvent them.  As for the second problem...returning without a Yeerk or with an Alliance member...presuming you would even accept a new Yeerk...is not an option.  Visser 3 will know if Terenia is not controlling you.  Returning with Terenia is not an option either.  As you mentioned...she is in an unpredictable state.  Allowing her to make off with you would be foolhardy...most-likely outrightly incompetent on my part.>>

Ossanlin glances at the glass of yellowish human liquor that had been placed in front of him, contemplating, before looking back at Efaen.  <<You are in a unique position, I'll give you that.  A strategic position even...and I would enjoy having a direct line to the good Visser's Blade Ship.  I do not know if the Alliance has any more operatives aboard that ship...they may.  If they do, then we have some intelligence at least...even though it is filtered through the Alliance before it gets to me.  However, I do not see a way to safely return you to your post on the Blade Ship.  I know that you are not fond of our military...and females are not well-respected in such a setting traditionally.  I would still offer you a place amongst my crew under certain circumstances.  I would not treat you any differently than the rest, though I cannot speak for the others.>>

Ossanlin shakes his head.  <<If you wish it...to be free of Terenia and to join my crew...that may be possible.  However you have expressed in the past that this would not suit your desires.  The offer stands...as for the rest...I'm afraid that you will have to remain here.  I simply cannot allow you to return to Yeerk feelers without an airtight situation.  Your morph capability is too powerful to risk giving to the Empire.>>

"So it would seem." Fiona takes another drink. "What's your story? What are you doing out here?"

Salem chuckled and shook his head. "Lately, all I've been running from are Imperial Yeerks and these rebels who apparently have a different view of a certain bounty hunter than I do." he winked at Myitt. "And I keep expecting a government Andalite to morph out of the shadows and gun me down. I've always been good at making enemies, and even better at running away from them. I guess my time recently on the Andalite homeworld was just a nice little vacation before returning to what I do best." He looked up at the sky and swallowed. "Not sure why I'm still here, actually, but it seems to be working out alright so far." He smirked. "Once you get past the rebels and the shooting and the double-dealing immortals and the constant threat of death, this place isn't so bad."

Efaen glances at Claxter, his words reminding her of an important detail. She remains respectfully silent throughout Ossanlin's response, although her posture stiffens significantly. When he finishes her response is somewhat guarded.

<<I...understand your reservations, of course,>> she says, <<But I must ask; if you were aware that Terenia may be compromised through the murder of her sibling, why did you bring them together? You knew the most likely outcome, and yet you went through with it regardless? I do not ask out of pity for the Imperial, but was there not a course of action that would have better served our cause?>>

Myitt smiles at the ground.  "Yeah.  Some place for a pit stop, huh?"  She shakes her head.  "What I don't get is, why would a human be living among Andalites?  Why would a human even be involved with the Yeerk Empire?  Perhaps your universe is substantially different from mine, but where I come from humans don't partner up with sentient androids and go flying about the galaxy in advanced ships."

---

Corliss gestures with his drink.  "Same thing you're doing out here, I expect.  Getting away, as terrible a place as this is to do so, really.  At least it's a temporary distraction."  He pauses, eyeing Fiona squarely.  "Hmm.  Though if you really are human, I'd love to know how you learned about my people, let alone how to fly a ship."  He grins dangerously.  "Are you an astronaut?"

Fiona considers Corliss for a moment, then shrugs. In a perfectly neutral tone, she replies, "I have been an astronaut." She smiles. "I have been a lot of things." She finishes her glass and sets it on the bar. "As for how I know about your people because..." She pauses, trying to think of how to describe it. "I spend quite a lot of time... 'floating around' is probably the simplest term... and you would be amazed what you can observe when relatively few people are aware of your presence."

Corliss raises his eyebrows in surprise.  "You could perhaps teach me and my friends a thing or two about making our presence relatively unknown.  That tends to come in handy when trying to blend into a population."  He picks up his drink again, then realizes.  "Of course, I don't mean on Earth," he says dismissively.  "Those days are long gone, I'm afraid."

Her transformation complete, Tora tugs the archaic water closet chain to flush the empty toilet and twists the knob to run the tap. The water that swirls down the drain is not exactly clear.

Shutting off the sink's water, she opens the bathroom door and emerges into the Bar to find everything just about as she had left it... except that Myitt is now gone. She waves a hand in an attempt to catch Corliss's eye. It would not do to use direct thought-speech in Terenia's suspicious host's presence.

Corliss notices Tora out of the corner of Mike's vision, nodding at her.

<No time to be discussing semantics with some human space traveler,> he mutters.

Tora walks briskly to Corliss. "Did she leave? Your brother?" she murmurs, leaning away from the stranger to whom he is speaking.

Corliss glances over his shoulder, scanning the room.

"I reckon so," he says quietly, leaning back towards Tora.  "Did you want to try and fix up your ship, or reckon you need a ride, yeah?"

"I will attempt to catch her before she leaves the planetoid," Tora answers. "My ship is not worth salvaging. If I don't see you before I leave, safe trip home." She places a hand on his shoulder before turning to leave, eyes on the door.

Fiona watches Corliss' conversation with Tora, then begins speaking again.

Fiona snorts. "Please. You yeerks have an unfortunate disadvantage there." She smiles smugly. "Some of us don't need a host to move around." Granted, she mused, the price to be paid probably wouldn't be to his liking. "Although, I'll grant you it's a lot more convenient."

She decided to let him chew on that one for a bit. She turns from him and stands up slightly, leaning over the bar, waving at the bartender. When she's sure she had his attention, she picks up her glass and shakes it back and forth.

Corliss touches Tora's hand briefly, nodding.

He settles back to his drink, smirking into the glass and not particularly caring if Fiona is still listening.  "Well, you'd be surprised how hard it can be to blend in, in an environment where everyone is already one of my people."
