<No. I can handle this. You morph back NOW> I commanded, trying to make sure that Leah didn't die.

(Sorry for taking so long. I am back, for now. If I suddenly stop posting, it is probably my last post for the night.)

<Leah, pull yourself together and DEMORPH!> I threw as much force as I could into the thought-speak command, and even the jaguar's mind seemed to cringe away from me.

<Edward, stay away from the bear's paws. You can survive the teeth, but the paws will knock you dizzy.>

I dove under the bear as it crouched back on all fours. I flipped onto my back and used every bit of the jaguar's muscle to rip up at the bear from below. It roared and tried to swat me with its paw, and I wrapped around the entire arm, weighing the bear down.

The only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.

They were right. I could come back and fight after I demorphed. I lumbered over to the bushes and tried to remember what I looked like. Another rustle. Three humans, armed with dracon beams, stepped forward. We were surrounded. "Go ahead, morph out. You'll bleed to death if you don't," the one in the middle urged. <Stupid Yeerk. You disgust me.> I swiped my paw at his head--and missed. I tried again, lost my balance, and fell onto my side, energy and blood slowly draining.

You're dying, you're dying! Demorph! I concentrated on my human form. In a minute, I was normal again. The pain was gone, but the exhaustion remained. I looked up and realized that I was surrounded on all sides. "Move and we'll shoot."

I growled, and lunged at the bear's neck, biting my teeth into his neck hard. <Edward!> The bear cried out in public thought speak. <Come on! We know each other! We were cellmates for the longest time!> He cried, in an attempt to make me ease up

I felt weird. Should I kill him, for actions his Yeerk was making him do? Keeping my jaws locked around his neck, I lessened up on the pressure, wondering what to do.

<Edward, we MUST get to Leah NOW. If you don't kill him, he'll just keep being a slave. This is mercy. Do you need me to do it for you? After seeing me with Alistair, you know that I have no compunctions about this. Whatever you choose, you MUST choose NOW.>

I told him all this in a rush of private thought-speak, trying to get him to hurry up before Leah became toast.
It would be the final test of whether or not he was a Controller, although by now I was fairly certain he was a free human.

I listened to Ais' thoughts, then bit down hard onto the Bear's neck. He fell limp to the ground, dead. I morphed back, visibly shaken, but then morphed into wolf again. <Let... Lets go to Leah... She must NEED help.> I said, and started running towards where I smelt Leah's fear radiating from.

<It's one of your first kills as a free person. I understand that it is difficult, and I'm sorry for pressuring you, but we really DO need to help Leah.>
I told him, as we made our mad dash to where Leah was trapped.

<Maybe we can sneak up on them.>
I crouched in the bushes behind one Controller. The man across from him did not see me. Good.

My muscles tensed.
<Hang in, there, Leah. Don't give me away.>

I sprang upward, grabbed the Controller by the neck, and flipped him to the ground, severing his spine and crushing his windpipe. I dove at the second man and pinned him to the ground, just as he raised the Dracon Beam. Heat lacerated my thigh, but even an injured jaguar is hundreds of times stronger than the strongest human.
<Don't move, if you don't want to die in pain. I don't NEED to kill you, but I can.>
He whimpered his agreement.
It's hard to disagree with the three hundred pound cat on your chest.

<Are there any others, guys?>

"We're completely surrounded. You shouldn't have come. One slave is better than three," I hissed. I had tried to remorph three times. Each time, someone fired a Dracon beam. First, they hit ten feet away. Then, five. Three. I knew the next time they wouldn't miss. "Don't try anything, they'll shoot. If you don't believe me, look," I said, gesturing to the burn marks in the sand.

I glanced around.
Privately, I addressed Leah.
<Okay, we are going to bluff. Then, if that fails, we are going to threaten. Do you follow me?>

Openly, I shouted.
<Okay, slugs. If you want your buddy to live, you'll all come out here with your hands visible. If you make any funny moves, he's dead. Have you ever seen a jaguar kill? I'm a whole lot faster than you are.>

Privately, I called to Edward and Rich, letting Leah hear, too.

<Fellows, if you are nearby, we could use some assistance.>

<I'm on it! He's in the office at the top of the building... you can't see the broken glass? I'm already up there> I said, prowling. I see a young man, early 20's, in the office, holding a Dracon Beam. <SURPRISE!> I yell in public thought speak. He turned around, and I leapt at him, gnashing my teeth, as we fall through the window and onto the pavement. Due to the position I've got him in, he breaks his neck on the fall, killing him. I leap over his body, and tackle the nearest human, growling ferociously as I bite at his hand, forcing him to drop the gun.

<Was that the last one? Are you okay? I can't smell anymore out here, but I'm not sure. There's a lot of blood.>

<I think its the last one...> I morph out of wolf, back into my regular self. "I think everyone's gone!" I said.

<Not quite> Alistair said as he moved out of the shadows (sorry for the godmod)

Once the fight broke out I went for the "flight" part of the "fight-or-flight" response. It wasn't until I had reached the bathrooms that I realized I could probably do something to help Ais and the other two. After checking to make sure no one was watching I snuck into the bathroom and stripped down to underwear. Thank goodness those boxers were tight enough to work for morphing.

Taking a deep breath I focused on being the grizzly bear. My mind was struggling to hold back the panic as I felt the first changes start. Thick, brown hair began to push out through my skin as pounds and pounds of muscles and fat began to form all around my body. I had my eyes closed, preferring not to watch as my relatively small body ballonned into several hundred pounds worth of muscle. I could my face shift and push out and teeth grew. While it surprised my that it didn't hurt, I felt a little sick from the idea of what I would look like if someone saw me.

Eventually the changes finished, and I opened my eyes. I was on all fours, and felt much bigger. Yet, it seemed natural. I could hear firing in the distance, and I pushed my way out of the bathroom and in that direction. Upon getting closer I could see one human laying on the ground, another one with a jaguar on his chest, and several others with some kind of weapon, and a wolf was there as well.

<Mind filling me in with whats going on guys?> I directed the thoughts toward the jaguar, hoping it was Ais or the other two.

(Leo, I don't think that counted as god-modding, did it? I mean, I made Alistair bargain our characters' freedom. And as far as I remember, he's still alive.)

"Well, now you decide to show up. How many others are there?" I asked Richard.

(As long as you don't utterly kill him, I'm fine with it, Leo.)

<Rich! Good of you to join us. Well, right now we are in a bit of a standoff. It would help tremendously if you'd make a presence, please. Now. Watch out for the Dracon Beams.>

Openly, I called out.
<If you're hiding, you'd better show yourself! This is your last chance!>
