(Welcome back, I'm glad we have another player.
)
I split off from the rest of the group, heading inno particular direction. For a while, I wondered if I would get lost, but it didn't matter. I needed to find something good. Most of the creatures I saw were small and nearly defenseless. I needed something big enough to take down a lion. Whatever a lion was.
Eventually, I came to an indoor section. There were several labeled doors. One of them read, "Polar Bears." I'd seen a bear on a news report when I was with Aaron. I knew by the way it moved and the way it chased after its prey that it was good enough.
I opened the door and entered the room. Several people were gathered around an enormous, cylindrical glass case, large enough to fill eight rooms. Inside of this case was a large piece of ice, surrounded on all sides by water. We were high above the island on a balcony.
A little girl ran to the glass and pointed down. "Mommy, mommy! Poar bears!" she shouted excitedly. I began my search for the entrance to this fake habitat. There was no telling how much time I had already wasted. But wouldn't everyone see me?
Not if you're careful.Finally, I found the entrance door, and to my advantage, it was unlocked. When I was sure that no one could see me, I opened the door and slipped inside. I was in a dark, nearly empty room. There was another door at the end of this one. When I opened the next door, a wave of cold air hit me, and I found myself shivering, standing a few feet away from a metal latter. I quickly climbed down, and made my way to the water's edge. Good. Now, where were the bears?
My answer came when I heard the sound of walking behind me. At first, I thought someone had come in after me. I spun around to see a mass of white fur looming over me. My stomach churned. "Hello," I said quietly, hoping the bear wouldn't be tempted to attack. I took a step backward, afriad that if I tried to acquire it it would tear my hand off. My foot suddenly slipped forward. I stumbled backward and hit the ice. The bear was not happy. I knew that if I waited too long, it would attack. Hesitantly, I reached up and felt my fingertips touch his soft, white fur.
Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate. The bear jerked in surprise, lifted one of its paws, and slammed it into my chest. The air exploded from my lungs as I flew backward. Mind racing, I tried to stand, but slipped again.
I expected to feel ice underneath me. Instead, I felt millions of needles digging into my flesh. The world above me became a blur as my head went under the surface of the freezing water.
