"Humans are a strange race. Often they like to choose an arbitrarily small number of fellow Humans to care about, at the expense of their species at large. It's a wonder they even made it as far as they did."

William laughs faintly. "Humans can be monstrous, yes, but they aren't the only monsters. And some monstrous acts are well justified." He gives a sharp smile, then helps himself to a seat next to Verdana.

Dalik's eyes narrow. "I wasn't even born on the Homeworld," she says. "To return to our pools, to hand over our hosts, would be asking me to live out my life in a cage. To sacrifice everything I've ever known or been capable of. Yes, I can control Cameron, and yes my species as a whole can control many others. But the Empire is foolish if they think force will be effective indefinitely." She taps her chest. "Cameron allows me here, of her own volition, and in return I keep her alive through this foolish war. And, perhaps, provide some semblance of decent company."

"Keslin and I..." Myitt trails off, frowning. "Ossanlin, I understand why you were upset. But I've gotta tell you, that this me?" She taps her chest. "I never meant to abandon you, and I certainly never abandoned you to a war you couldn't win."

She swallows and tugs up her black sleeves. "But these are still here." With a couple of fingers she traces the Hork-Bajir blade marks, the long and tan scars on the underside of her forearms, remnants of Serid's attack long ago.

"Brute force, I suppose?" Merc slides the last of his money across the bar for one more drink. "Wiping out every other race until good ol' Homo Sapiens ruled the Earth." He stops for a minute to consider what Jeffrey said. "We claim we had a good reason for turning some other man into juicy mincemeat. . . ." Maybe there was something to take from that. . . .

No matter. He was still miles and possibly in a different dimension from home. If he ever manages to get back home, then he'd consider the implications. "So, Ireland, huh?" he says in a very transparent attempt to change the subject. "Never been there myself. Nice place?"

"It's kind of cold. And it rains a lot. Still, I'd take just about any place on the Surface over the Underground. I guess I can thank the stars I wasn't born in a prison."

"Okay..." says Jeffrey, holding up a finger, and looking at Dalik. "Let me see if I've got this tangled mess straight. There's the Empire, a bunch of goons who think you can just keep enslaving everyone until there's nobody free left--- The..." He counts his fingers. "...the blue deer guys, the Andalites, pretty thought-sending people who fight them and try and get them to go back home. And then you've got the rebels, which is whatever Myitt is. But if that's true..."

Jeffrey grins at Dalik. "...then what're you, milady, since if I'm remembering right you're...none of them? An outsider? A lone gunman at high noon?" He chuckled.

Dalik's lips twist into a scowl. "I'm myself," she says flatly. "I'm not gunning anyone down. The rebels waste valuable time and resources planning failed attacks that only expose them." Her hand drops to her holster, but it doesn't touch her weapon. Rather, it brushes over the small pouch that holds her computer cube.

"I fight the Empire in my own way," she says. Her narrow gaze slides to Ossanlin. "The Andalites as well. I turn their technology against them."

Ossanlin nods at Myitt.  <I know that.  I suppose I merely got used to the close camaraderie we built in Rogue Element.  I'm not mad at the other Myitt...I was simply sad.  In mourning.  I suppose that's part of the reason that I took the insane risk that I did.>

He glances at Myitt's arms, furrowing his main eyes, the events that might've caused them cloudy in his mind at best.  <Hork-Bajir wounds...my memory regarding events around the time-shift are foggy...Serid?>  Ossanlin tries hard to dig the memory up but is unsuccessful.

Merc nods slightly at Jeffrey's assessment of the situation. "Makes sense," he mumbles to himself. He then turns to Dalik, a focused, inquisitive look on his face. "So, you're fighting this Empire and the Andalites? Gotta admit, I like the ambition there. Killing two birds with one stone. But I have to imagine that's quite a bit to take on at once." He downs his last shot, this one tequila, cringing subtly at the flavor. "Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to discourage you, but that sounds like some risky business. Unless you got others on your side, pissing off two armies at once is flirtin' with disaster, lemme tell you."

"Probably, yeah!" says Jeffrey, chuckling a bit. "I mean if the Andalites don't like you for some reason, outright going after them and the main government is daring, but it's asking for trouble! Reminds me a bit of a crazy old...Well I wouldn't really call her a friend, per se, but a serial killer with standards that I liked back at home. She would've liked that strategy."

"Are you a Technopa---never mind," says Jeffrey, waving his hand back and forth. He looks towards Dalek. "...a hacker, that is? Is that it? No death, just dead mainframes and Techs scrambling to fix the mess?"

For the first time, Dalik grins outright, both Merc and Jeffrey's commentary seeming to please her. "A hacker, yes," she says. "That's the closest terminology." She shakes her head, still smiling. "I don't deal with making technicians scramble, though. Nothing so small and insignificant. When you can take control of, say, the life support systems of an Imperial ship, you can have an incredibly permanent effect on the livelihood of the crew. It's difficult to live without oxygen."

She glances at Mercer. "Of course it's risky. There's nothing worth doing that isn't risky. Eventually I'll be captured and killed for it. That's a fate I accept."

Merc laughs - a harsh, choppy sound. "****, finally something I can understand," he says, grinning from ear to ear. "Can't say I really get your cause, but I gotta love a good bit of anarchy. As long as I'm not in the crossfire, at least. But on the other hand . . ." he briefly glances at Ossanlin. "I doubt all these Andalites are bad guys. He seems cool, at the very least. Just saying, it's best to pick your battles."

"I don't know this particular Andalite," Dalik admits, giving Ossanlin a narrow look. "I've heard his name, of course, but the names of Andalite captains run together before too long. And just because he 'seems cool'," she wrinkles her nose at the expression, "that hardly means he wouldn't wholeheartedly champion the destruction of my people. Most Andalites have the unfortunate habit of seeing the world in black and white."

"He..." Jeffrey looks slightly uncomfortable and hesitant. "...I think that a guy like that used to be my best friend. And so I don't think it's as cut and dry as all that. Although actually..." Jeffrey blinks. "...this is the first time I've ever really been able to think about it. What is this flipping Bar..."

"Anyway, my guy went into black and white vision after I killed someone he was dating," says Jeffrey, rolling his eyes. "That whole thing was a cluster****, basically--- The point being is he didn't start seeing the world like that. He got to seeing the world like that after getting burned from it. And it seems to me that that dude over there? He's learned one better. One of the other tapeworms here seems to be an old friend of his."
