Suddenly, Ogreon yelled, "Van! Don't go that way!"

The Clangst's loud voice certainly made him jump, but Van quickly recovered and waved his arm in dismissal. He was fairly used to dangerous situations, and thus felt perfectly prepared to approach this bizarre, wooden, music-playing box bigger than he was.

The Pirate stopped his approach momentarily, and reached down to his thick, metal belt. He unfolded a metal strap from the front, which he threw over his left shoulder. Then he reached back, and clicked the other end of it into place on the back of his belt. Then, he flipped open another plate on his belt and pulled out a glowing blue card.

It was a solid storage unit, based on Thyllian matter conversion technology. It could hold only one thing in it, but that was precisely why he had multiple cards with him. This one, however, held Van's rifle. It was a fairly elegant weapon, known properly as a Salmarian Field Rifle, Model Dalask-4.

This model, however, was somewhat uncommon, and suffered a short production run as its popularity dropped. This was because its long barrel was made to give more reach to use the attached heat-bayonet at the end of the rifle. By the time the gun was in production, heat bayonets fell into disuse as cheaply made import weapons and common stun grenades grew more popular with Salmarian hunters.

The rifle, however, became a popular weapon among space pirates, and what few rifles were made ended up being snatched up by the black market. Though it was a little primitive and outdated for an energy weapon, ammunition was cheap and easy to manufacture. The gun had excellent range, and the heat bayonet was especially useful for tearing foes to shreds. The weapon was also near-indestructible, at least from Van's personal experience using it, and he wouldn't have traded it for anything else.

Van tapped the storage card, and then pulled it apart. He pulled out his rifle, as if it was coming in through a small tear in space. The Pirate admired his weapon for a few moments, adjusted and activated the bayonet, and then flipped out another card and pressed it into the side of the gun, loading it with energy rounds. He took aim at the Piano momentarily, then lowered the gun, and approached it cautiously.

Van's more aural senses perked up as he came closer, and he grinned. Ogreon was definitely right about staying away from this thing, and excitement coursed through his body. The Piano was definitely dangerous, and as he came closer, its music began to increase in tempo. Van's adrenaline pumped faster. Crazy things like this were the spice of his life.

"Aww yeah, bay-bee. Keep dancing for me, I got the ready," he crooned.

"I had presumed as much," Zorish says briskly. "It seems she was caught up in the murder of my host; clearly, a different version of my host than the one you see."

He glances back towards Corliss, a look of cold fury passing his features briefly. "So the Yeerk is protecting a human that he has...romantic feelings for?" Zorish is unable to hide his disgust at the thought; temporarily it overrides even his repulsion at speaking to an Andalite. "I find that hard to believe, Andalite. Yeerks and humans love in very different ways." He shakes himself, as though trying to physically remove the thought from him. "I would prefer not to speak to Corliss again if I can avoid it. He has proven himself...less than trustworthy. If this Terenia person is aboard his ship she can, presumably, respond to a hail. Do you have the frequency to contact his vessel?"

~Ossanlin~

<You are still functional and able to perform duties aboard-ship.  I see no reason not to exploit your potential.>  Ossanlin reaches his now-free hand back to the storage drawers and pulls out an extra transponder.  He auto-detects his own signal and then auto-detects Serid's new unit with his own, and then holds that out as well.

<The ARC, in case you're unfamiliar with it, is a powerful handheld computing device, not wholly unlike a Yeerk cube computer.  It functions very similarly to the larger tactical units that you would've trained with at the Academy.  It can give you similar information as well.  It can be a very useful tool.  It also contains a z-space transponder, so should something happen to your communicator, it can function as a backup.  The utility belt I gave you with the holster should also have vacancies for this equipment.  I do have rations and emergency medical supplies as well but I'm afraid they wouldn't do you much good in your current body.  They are appropriately dosed for adult Andalites, and the rations are grass-based of course, neither would be healthy for your human form.>

~Rathien~

Rathien chuckles as Salem speaks, ready to dismiss the prey's conversation as a tactic.  But then...why had his instinct told him to come in for a drink?  Rathien never revealed himself until the moments before he struck, and sometimes not even then.  His instinct was never wrong...why had he merely had a conversation with his prey?  It was keeping him off-balance from the look in his eyes, but Rathien had though it was merely leading to The Kill.  Was there more to it?

Without warning Rathien sets down his drink and flicks his right-hand wrist, a straight blade flipping into his hand from up his sleeve.  The arm motion carries the tip of the blade within a hairsbreadth of Salem's neck but continues on around until the blade reaches the nails of Rathien's left hand.  He proceeds to manicure them tediously.  "You suggest a more challenging hunt than yourself?"  His tone containing a bit of mockery.

Claxter nodded in acknowledgement to Salem, and turned his attention once again to Zorish. <I could attempt it.> He said, pulling out his comunicator. <I'm not sure she'll take a hail unless she knows it's from Corliss. I don't pretend to understand their relationship.> While he talks, he performs the communication attempt. He manages to reach Corliss' ship, and waits for a response.

He saw the alien next to Salem draw a blade. He had the look of a predator, and made Claxter's tail twitch slightly with nervousness. He happened to be within strike range, though, so Claxter was relatively safe. He didn't say anything about it.

Corliss looks up at Efaen, straightening himself at his seat at the bar.

"I believe I'll be able to restrain myself, if you'll cooperate," he says, bristling.

Before she can reply, the comm link in his hand starts beeping incessantly.  Corliss looks down at the flat little panel, frustrated.

"An Andalite signal?" he says, frowning.  "Excuse me, Efaen."  He answers the hail.  "Yes?  Who is this?"  Blinking in surprise, he looks across the room at the spot where Mike's voice echoes.

Where Claxter stands, holding a link.

Serid turns the Andalite device over in his hands, inspecting it. "Yes, very useful. Thank you, sir." He fits it to its home in his new holster, which he fits to his waist. He tightens it with a sharp tug to the end.

"I suppose provisions for humans are highly uncommon within the military still," he says with a small smile. "Perhaps I can arrange with the owner of the restaurant on this asteroid to provide with ample food to reach the next human food-carrying destination. For how long do you think I will need to see to my own nutrition?" he asks, glancing curiously at the storage area from which Ossanlin has come.

<Oh, hello Corliss. I was actually attempting to hail your ship instead of you. I either got both, or it chose your communicator first. Zorish wants to talk to Terenia.> He faced Corliss with his main eyes instead of looking at the comm. He pressed some keys to have his device prioritize on a ship's computer instead of just the nearest comm link.

"Ewa," she introduced herself, taking Al's hand and smiling.  "Nice suit.  Should I congratulate you on something?"

She was also curious about what he thought Jasper was getting good at, but her attention was caught by something over Al's shoulder--namely Van suddenly taking a huge gun out of nowhere and stalking towards the piano.  What the....?

"That's not how you guys usually approach a piano here, is it?" She kept in incredulity in her expression low, just in case it was.  Maybe this is supposed to be a comedy.....

Ewa shrugged casually, but felt a twinge of unease. "I don't know yet, but I've only been here a few hours," she replies thoughtfully.  "I think I'll be able to recognize it if I watch carefully.  What is it you're here for?"
That was an interesting response... maybe she was just a traveler by trade or something to that affect.
<<She doesn't know why she's here? That sounds... poetic, almost. Is that the right word?>> Jasper said.
<<I believe so, though with you humans horrible deranged language, how should I know?>>
<<I have to agree with you there.>>
<<Perhaps she comes from a culture that looks to destiny as a force that guides their lives, rather than as something what you make of it.>>
<<That sounds reasonable... and.. it sounds like something from some book I read or something. Again, poetic.>>

"That sounds... poetic." Sapttus replied.

<<Hey! That was my word!>>
<<Then you should have spoken up faster.>>

"You came here with the intent of finding out why after arriving? I feel like I might be intruding, but what inspired you to come here, of all places? And, to answer myself, I'm here on an 'extended vacation' you could say. Our previous living situation was... undesirable at best." Sapttus said. He didn't want to give away too many specifics, so he kept to the general basics. "I haven't decided yet if this is my final destination or simply a rest stop yet, however. It certainly has been an interesting visit so far. Particularly for a first-time space-farer like myself."

"You're getting good with that thing," he said brightly. "What's up?"

He then turned to Ewa and held out his hand, still smiling warmly, "Hey, I'm Al. Pleased to meet you."

Jasper smiled. "Thanks! I was uh... just wanted to let ya know that we're over here, in case you uh... needed anything." He said, looking pointedly at Salem and his 'friend'.

Jasper looked over at the piano area. "What the...? I ... have no clue... is he... stable?"

Salem reflexively jerked back when Rathien drew his blade. Now the hunter was obviously trying to be intimidating. This was more what Salem was used to. He grinned, feeling his usual high from this sort of situation start to kick in. The hunter wouldn't kill him here if he thought there was a chance of him exploding. He still wasn't sure what Rathien had planned by coming in here and revealing himself, but if Salem played this right, they would very much end up playing by his rules.

He noticed the weapon Van drew- and the way he drew it. He'd seen that type of storage before, but Van's technology might work differently than those he'd seen. If he could acquire it, he might be able to make improvements to his or to Van's, given time. He made a note to ask Van about it later.

He laughed, "I'm not suggesting anything. I can't be working with someone who will take whatever constitutes the 'perfect moment' in his head to stab me in the back. Though, yes, the project I have in mind would make hunting me look like child's play. Not that I have everything I need to go ahead yet." He sighed, yawned melodramatically, and leaned back against the bar so that he could see the whole room, and lowered his voice, leaning in closer to the Ildari hunter in a way that he hoped might make him uncomfortable, "Tell me, Rathien, have you ever thought about what it would take to hunt a member of the Andalite electorate?"

Al grinned, "A pleasure, Ewa. As for my attire, I managed to get my hands on very nice tuxedo. I figured that was enough of an occasion to dress up." His eyes flickered over to Salem and Rathien, but unless something happened, he wasn't going to get involved if he could help it. Their last encounter had left him with a bitter taste in his mouth. He shook his head and said to Jasper, "Thanks. Not sure how much you can do, though. That guy is exceptionally dangerous. I'm just hoping Salem has a better idea of how to handle this than I do."

When Ewa pointed out Van approaching the piano, he ****ed his head and looked at him quizzically, "Maybe he comes from a planet with evil pianos?" he speculated with a wink at Ewa. He laughed, "I'm guessing that boy has no idea how to play that thing. Should we... like, help him out?" he asked Jasper and Ewa.

Ewa laughed.

"So long as this is not a planet with evil pianos.  I'm sure someone in one of those universes has one, and I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up here.  And to answer your question," she turned to Jasper, "I did not choose this place for myself.  I'm pretty sure I'm doing a favor for someone who has no idea what they're doing."  Someone who mixes Animorphs and Elves and bad cowboys and wouldn't object to some sort of evil piano.

Assured that the piano did NOT deserve to be queried at gunpoint she began to make her way toward Van.  "Do either of you play?" she asked back over her shoulder.  "I can only fake a little bit."

Almost, she was stupid enough to tap Van on the shoulder, but after taking a second look at the weapon she backed off a few paces.  "Van, I don't know what you think that is, but you're making yourself look pretty ridiculous.  It's a musical instrument.  In fact, I rather expected a charmer like yourself might know how to play one."  Though she began seriously, her voice ended on a slightly playful note.  Don't want to sound too judgmental.  There are so many strange things here, after all.

~Ossanlin~

<I'm afraid I'm uncertain as to how we will procure edible human suppliment aboard-ship.  I may need to speak with Myitt about that.  They have plenty of human-controllers in their midst, perhaps we could use the same supplier.>  Ossanlin smiles a bit.  <I think that's about all I have that would be usable at this point, Warrior.  Hopefully someday I will be able to return your tail to you as well.  Shall we adjourn to the establishment?>  Ossanlin gestures down the entry ramp.

~Rathien~

Rathien raises his eyebrows a bit as Salem speaks, still trimming his nails.  "Of course you know I cannot guarantee that I will not destroy you.  If I see The Kill, I will execute it...but I assume that working with you, if that is truly what my instinct tells me, would most-likely delay your demise."

Salem leans in and Rathien finished trimming his nails as the (loosely termed) human finished speaking.  Rathien flips the knife up in his hand, barely pressing the tip into the point of Salem's chin.  He looks directly at Salem's eyes displaying no discomfort whatsoever.  He grins again, running his tongue over the same fang as before, speaking low and slow.  "You shouldn't lean this closely to me senrin unless you want to kiss me.  And you shouldn't kiss me unless you mean to follow through with the rest."  Rathien pulls the knife away and lightly draws it, flat-side-down, against the top of Salem's thigh before flicking it back up his sleeve in the same fluid motion as if the contact had merely been incidental.  "And I don't think Al would like sharing."  Rathien's expression twists again at the mention of Al's name.

He retreats back into his own personal space, taking another draught from his glass, tone genial and haughty again as if the previous moments hadn't even happened.  "As for hunting Andalites, I've Hunted and Killed a Prince before."  He pulls the modified ARC from his belt and waves it at Salem.  "He was even kind enough to give me a present."  He replaces it in its pouch before continuing.  "Andalites can be fun, but none have been as...creative...as you, Tobias."  He smirks, taking another quick sip from his glass.

"Claxter," Corliss says as patiently as he can into the link, before exploding, "why the hell are you divulging information about my ship and its inhabitants to a Sub-Visser of the Yeerk Empire?"

Of course, at that point using the link is rather useless, as Corliss' voice can be heard quite clearly from across the room.

<Cooperate?> Efaen straightens her back, looking more than a little displeased by his choice of words. She is interrupted, then, by Corliss' comm link going off. She is surprised to hear Claxter on the other end, and her stalk eyes immediately pick him out of the crowd.

<<Claxter,>> she says quickly. <<That human you are talking to, do you have verification of her identity? I suspect that she is some time-altered version of Terenia or her deceased sister, but I need to know for certain.>>

Just then Corliss raises his voice so that it carries across the room. Efaen jumps in surprise, her tail twitching nervously. <Perhaps I should return when you are more in control of yourself, Corliss?>

Zorish's eyebrows shoot skyward at the exchange between Claxter and Corliss. He had hoped, upon discovering that Terenia was in the Yeerk's ship, to avoid an outright confrontation. Clearly this Andalite was unaware of the Yeerk technology that allowed one to forward communications from ships to personal links.

"I suppose I will not need your services after all, Andalite," Zorish says smoothly, taking a step back. "Unless you are capable of breaking into a Yeerk vessel, which I doubt, I will have to deal with the traitor personally." With a bit of an irritated sigh, Zorish unhooks his Dracon from his holster and pulls it out, holding the weapon loosely at his side. He can feel Tamora's unease at the possibility of violence, but he doesn't have time to soothe her.

"Traitor," Zorish says, walking back to Corliss and further interrupting his conversation with Efaen. He barely glances at the female Andalite. The look of disdain that he gives Corliss is pure Sub-Visser. "Why are you lying to me?"

<<Yes, she is the same.>> Claxter said to Efaen. <<He called terenia Human, though I'm not sure if their Terenia is the same as ours.

<<I'm afraid I have no hacking skills.>> He said to Zorish.

<I see no reason why not, Yeerk. I hold not affection towards you or Terenia. If anything, inconveniencing you is a tamer way of getting back at you for your lies and deceit than I'd actually like to do. My Prince still values your life, so really making you suffer is something I can't do without reprimand.> he put his communicator back. He didn't know if Terenia would answer or not, but he was interesting in seeing what Zorish might do.
