I worked my way into the surprisingly stretchy suit and did a quick half-morph first of a fly, then demorph, then of the polar bear. Each time, briefly the suit tried to conform to my physical changes, and then it blended into the body of what I morphed... except for the ear coverings. By some freakish miracle of Andalite technology, the spongy material over my ears expanded to completely fill the bear's ears, and when I went fly, it stretched down the sides of my body to the sound-sensing parts of my insect legs and up to my antennae... and it always stayed a thickness that didn't hamper movement.
<Can you hear me?> "EEK!" I jumped.
<I'll take that for affirmative. The muffling material is nanotechnology; each nanite contains a very small transponder that converts both sound into its equivalent in electrical signals to your brain, whether you are or are not in morph. It will sound to you like thought-speech, even if the message is being spoken aloud. This will allow you to receive communications from our base, and you will be able to respond with thought-speech. Please keep in mind that this nanotechnology will detect all thought-speech, including that which you intend to be private. Also keep in mind that it will detect what you say aloud, as long as no louder noise than your voice overrides the default pick-up threshold of the microphone.>
I tried to process all that.
"Uhmn... okay?"
<Basically, if a Howler is howling nearby, you will have to use thought-speech to communicate with us. If you are near a jet engine, the same rule applies. You can talk aloud and still be heard, but only if there isn't a much louder source of sound near you. The microphones are sensitive and delicate; they are programmed to switch off in the presence of more than sixty decibels sound.>
"Ah. Nifty."
<We think so, yes. By the way, I'm Norm; I'll be your contact at the base. Cobra and the other kid have separate contacts, and we all answer to the Andalite.>
"Wait, you're human?"
<What gave you that idea? I'm a reformed Yeerk from the old resistance movement; I trapped myself in human morph the first chance I got.>
"Oh. Hehe... you just sound very human... if that's not an insult."
<Not at all! I'm glad to know I blend in. It's kinda' funny to think that now I'll be the voice in somebody's head again. Well, you'd better get on out there and see what else is going on.>
I could hear the smile in the man's voice; it became clear to me just how serious the situation was... for (former) Yeerks and Andalites to be working together...
...but then, I guess both species did have a very vested interest in Earth not being wasted.
I stepped out of the changing room and waited for the others.
