<Leaving any memory of Tamora will increase the risk of a relapse...Zorish will always have a tab in his memory to pull on...why did he lose her?  Where did she go?  That could unzip his memory anyway.  I see the risk as similar, it's dangerous any way we do this.>

"Yeah, you're right, it sucks either way," Tara grumbles.  "I think we should--" She freezes, the words choking in her mouth.

"I'll do it," Tara's voice says, abruptly changing tone as Zorish interrupts her. He pushes off from the ground, returning to a standing position and looking at Ossanlin steadily, "Although wouldn't the same be achieved regardless of whether you erased my and Tamora's memory? Could you not merely erase the portions of our memory responsible for our abduction after this confrontation with Terenia? It may prevent Tamora from becoming entirely hysterical, at the very least, and from what I understand I will have no friends at this place. The event of my escape is quite slim."

Tara growls in frustration, partly from being interrupted, and partly because Zorish has a decent point.

Zorish looks around the room, feeling hopeful for the first time.

"Very well, then," he says, "so long as no one is opposed, I should like to return to Tamora then."

<Hang on a minute,> Tara says irritably.  <We haven't gotten the chance to ask everyone.  I need to talk this over with Myitt, first.  Otherwise, there's no deal.>

Zorish scowls openly at Tara's comment. He does not want to delay his return to Tamora, and Myitt has not exactly shown him sympathy. However, if Zorish returns to Tamora without Myitt's approval he could be back to square one. If Myitt does not agree, Zorish realizes, She may very well turn Ossanlin back against me.

<You need to convince her that this is the best way,> Zorish says to Tara, half ordering her and half pleading with her, <You must.>

Zorish still looks unhappy, but he approaches the portable Yeerk pool tentatively, glancing briefly back at the Andalites and Hadrin before he tilts Tara's head to the side. He wastes no time in detaching himself from Tara, eager to return to his former host. Only a few seconds pass before Zorish's squirming form plops into the pool beside Myitt, freeing Tara.

<I will, don't worry,> Tara assures him as he leaves.  A few moments later she leans heavily against the table, scooping up Myitt and holding the side of her head wearily.

"Ugh," she mutters, holding Myitt up to her ear.  "This has got to be a record for me."  She winces as Myitt starts slithering back into her head, the Yeerk numbing everything up as she moves along.

Myitt slowly regains control of her human friend, and she goes back to leaning heavily on the table, facing away from the others.  Her eyes track, unseeing, as she stares down at the plastic tub that she'd been living in only a few minutes earlier.  Tara's memories of the last ten minutes flood into her mind.

<Hi, nice to see you, too,> says Tara cautiously.

Myitt doesn't reply as she pores over the memories, closing her thoughts off to Tara.

<Okay, then.  I'll just wait here while you finish looking at what Zorish was saying.  Oh, and my sixth birthday, how nice.>

Ossanlin shakes his head.  <You know too much Zorish.  You've been in Tara's head, which means you know quite a bit about the rebellion.  And you know of me...I don't believe the Empire knows that the rebels have any Andalite support whatsoever.  Anyway, we can erase your memory, and Tamora's, of everything after the pulse-mine induced unconsciousness.  You had set your fighter to take off...seems perhaps some damage messed with your guidance systems and you ended up at our destination instead.  Who knows what sort of communications devices you and Terenia have at your disposal, we can't risk you passing anything on.>

Ossanlin looks down at Myitt in her platic tub.  <I would also like to confer with Myitt on this and hear her opinion on the matter.  And if we do this, you will have to relinquish control of Tamora at least once more after she views Terenia's memories so that we can hear her own unaltered words.  In fact, it might be best if you relinquished your control before she views the memories.  But I seem to be getting ahead of myself.  The next step is to converse with Myitt and Tara...it would give us some insight into your true intentions no?>

"He can't hear you," Myitt says flatly, distractedly, still poring over the same few memories.  A deep sense of sick dread is building in Tara's stomach, but it's not coming from Tara herself.

<Oh, talk to him, but not to me.  That's great,> Tara says, exasperated.

Myitt finally blinks and focuses on the little pool.  She turns back to Ossanlin, straightening her back.  "Sorry about that,"  she calls.  Myitt starts walking back over to Ossanlin, looking at the other Andalites and at Hadrin in turn.  "Ossanlin, I've seen what has transpired here."  She clears her throat and looks around, patting her jacket.  "Could I...could I have my Dracon back, please?"

Ossanlin hands the modified Dracon back to Myitt.  <And, what do you think of it?  You're the memory-wipe expert, is it do-able?  If it is, do you think it'll work...the whole thing?>

In the pool, Zorish stretches out slightly once Myitt has been removed. He awaits his fate, knowing that either Tamora or a memory wipe looms in his near future. Knowing that he can do nothing more for his cause. He can only swim the small length of the pool, waiting and hoping that the next time he has eyes to open they will belong to Tamora.

Myitt shrugs, taking the gun and pacing a bit.  "It's hard to say," she says, with a look of consternation on her face.  "It's very risky, Ossanlin."  She looks especially at Hadrin.  "It's a risk I don't know we can take."  Thoughtfully, she walks back over to the little plastic tub, looking down at Zorish.

She bites her lip, wrestling with some internal turmoil, again hidden from Tara.

<Hello-oo?  Myitt, what the hell is up?> Tara asks.

Myitt swallows, reaching under the surface of the pool.  From behind it looks like she's taking Zorish out, but instead she has removed the little humming Kandrona wave/particle generator.  With a press of her thumb she clicks it off, and the static feeling in the room slowly fades.

<I'm sorry,> says the Yeerk, aiming at Zorish inside the pool with the modified Dracon.  When she pulls the trigger, there is no characteristic Dracon sound.  Only a strange hum and a crackle of electricity, and then the weird static feeling returns to the room for a moment.

The red beam of light lances into the plastic pool, sizzling the water but not boiling it.  The plastic remains intact, but the beam spreads out across the water's entire surface.  Myitt keeps her finger on the trigger for much longer than a normal Dracon shot, and her hands are trembling.

<What the ****!> Tara screeches.  <Myitt, stop!>  She fights for control, only causing a bit more trembling.

Zorish is still waiting, still thinking of Tamora, when suddenly he realizes that something is wrong. The flow of Kandrona has ceased. He barely has time to contemplate this change of events when the familiar background vibration of the generator returns - but something is clearly wrong. The life-sustaining nutrient that keeps Zorish alive is not present. He sends out an echolocation ping, trying to determine the source of the problem, but nothing seems amiss, except that suddenly he is intensely aware of how hungry he is. How long has it been since he truly fed? One day? Two? Suddenly he is famished, feeling as though he has not fed in a full cycle. He needs the Kandrona and it is not there. His small body thrashes and squirms within the pool's sludge, seeking out Kandrona that should be present but, somehow, is not.

He was thinking of Tamora, but now all other thoughts slip away as his most base instinct for survival takes over. He condenses his body as much as possible, trying to conserve the Kandrona left in his body. Hunger is all that exists as he enters what the Yeerks call The Fugue.

From Myitt's vantage point it would look like little more than a series of angry ripplings within the water, and then a sudden stillness as The Fugue overcomes Zorish and he stops thinking of Tamora, stops thinking of hunger and, finally, stops thinking about anything at all.

Myitt keeps the beam firing until it sputters and the Dracon's coolant system forces it to shut off.  She numbly sets the gun down with hands that are openly shaking, and she lets out a sob from her human throat, turning away from the dead Yeerk, not wanting to see or think about what she's done.  Not wanting to watch him disintegrate.  Not wanting to cope with the pain she's just caused him.

Tara, shocked into silence, finally starts thinking a series of confused and angry thoughts.  Then, <Did you really just...oh, god, Myitt...I promised him!>  She feels sick deep in her stomach.

Myitt ignores her at first, sinking to the ground and bowing her head.  Silent sobs wrack through her.  <I had to,> she cries miserably.  <Oh, Tara, please, it was him or us!>  Tears patter onto her dirty blue jeans, onto the metal floor, and she hugs her human torso with hands that still feel beyond her control.
