To answer Chad and...someone else...from awhile back:
Yes, having the ebooks is illegal and Scholastic is well within their rights to order us to remove them. Even if the books are out of print, and even if updated versions are published via the re-release, copyright laws are in effect for the original editions for sixty years, whereupon the publisher and/or author must reapply or it falls into public domain.
So yeah, even though the books were out of print, and even though the books were put together by fans, Scholastic is well within their rights.
Also, piggybacking off of what Jess said: I agree that Scholastic is likely keeping an eye on the situation and it is perhaps not in your best interest to be offering to e-mail digital copies of the books to everyone on RAF, or to direct members to torrent sites. If nothing else, you could just be pointing Scholastic to other places that they can harp on in addition to RAF.
Be grateful for the time that we had the ebooks and leave it at that. Yeah, the timing sucks, but it really isn't the job of a big corporate legal team to pat RAFians on the back for being great members and keeping the flame alive. They are a business, they don't care about that. They care about making and keeping money and they are protecting their personal investments.
