Why no fantasy morphs?
« on: June 19, 2008, 01:20:11 PM »
Why wasn't there like a MM5 in which the animorphs morphed fantasy creatures? It would have made sense
You have your phoenix, unicorn, centaur, hobbit etc.

the real question is why? K.A. reisisted the urge to do the "you know what would be cool" and followed the set rules of the serise.

as much as i wanted to see rachel going on a Godzilla like rampage as a dragon, it's not going to happen

Well, of course it's not going to happen now. ::)
But it needn't be a gimmick, I think it would make a great MM5

Because it would mean creating a situation where they meet these creatures, and as a general rule you can't jump genres from science fiction to fantasy.  High technology and magic just don't mix.
So no, in my opinion it would make no sense whatsoever.

how, you need a plot element to bring those creature into the world. the only way i can see that happening in the animorph universe is that the yeerks found a cashe of arn techology and used to to create those creatures.

Alternate universe. Besides, the books got a little implausible at times. Did we ever figure out what the heck was going on with the no morphing Dinosaurs in the future with MM2? Or maybe it was some virtual reality thing like the matrix. Maybe the animorphs got a hold of the new yeerk invention, the Deusexmachitron which instantly fixes all the problems with this plot.

or the ellimist...

he is limited by the Game. anytime he moves, Crayak counter moves. and if he does something like introduce dragons and fansey creatures, Crayak would introduce something much much more nasty

Huh ???? Sci-fi and fantasy writers write multigenre novels quite often. In fact sci-fi and fantasy are very similar to each other, one just has science-though sometimes not much. A creative writer wouldn't have a problem.

Similar, but distinct. I'll admit there have been a few cases of the 2 mixing, most notably the comic book universe and the X-files, but generally speaking its one or the other. I still feel it would be wrong for magical creaures to just turn up the the Animorphs world.

 ???

Have you never read anything by Joan D. Vinge? Neil Gaiman? Garth Nix? Neil Shusterman?
Ursula K. LeGuin?
Isaac Bloody Asimov???

Sci-Fi and Fantasy are among the most frequently crossed genres in the publishing industry!!
(I should know; I've read most of it.)

Anyway, it might have been plausible if they invented a collective Time Matrix-built universe, but ONLY then.
The universe is, instant by instant, re-created anew. There is, in truth, no Past, only a memory of the Past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. The only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.

I know I've had a few thoughts about fantasy creatures. I mean, a lot of them are combinations of two different creatures, right? So, using the frollic manuever(sp?) thingy, they could sort of figure it out.

Like, mixing bat DNA with lizard DNA, you get a mini dragon! Or mix a Nartec with a dolphin, you'd get merfolk.

Frolis maneuver.

Unfortunately, it's RANDOM. You might get a lizard with a bat's face and echolocation, but no wings.
Ugly.
