Alice and Eddie
« Reply #255 on: April 18, 2009, 10:42:17 PM »
Alice:

I checked everyone off mentally as they made their choice: Reece wanted to stay with me and Damien, Brit wanted to stay too. That made 4 of us. One more, and I'd be on my fake-scooter instead of in Eddie's car for the second trip. Brit's suggestion of feigning capture was quite good, and Reece asked if I could realistically fake being a controller. I thought about that - I probably could pass as a Yeerk, providing no violence was needed on my part, and providing they didn't check on the false name I'd be giving... I didn't want to disrupt anyone's decision, so I continued to wait in silence for everyone to have chance to speak.

Torrence suggested both she and Kasey go with Eddie on the first trip, leaving 2 more spaces in the car. Wet-Hair-Girl pointed out we were on a clock here and urged the others to make their decision quickly. When she used Eddie's name, asking him to confirm she'd gotten it right, he gave a curt nod of ascention. She herself was apparently staying behind to raid the building for that list. In fact, she preempted that by starting to sneak off toward the building without further delay.

Kasey agreed to go with Eddie, and even convinced Reece he should go with them too.

"So, with Eddie is Kasey, Torrence, Reece and Autumn, leaving me with Damien, Brit, and... Say, what IS your name, anyway?" I called after the Wet-Haired-Girl, partly amused and partly astounded that nobody had even asked her this yet, including myself. I grinned sheepishly, hoping she wouldn't take offence at us not asking her name up 'til now.

When she answered, I smiled back at her, then went my own direction: The car-park.

When I got there, I scanned with my eyes and my Chee sensors but found no evidence of any CCTV or other surveillance watching over the cars. I signalled the all-clear, and tiptoed off in a random direction so if anyone WAS watching, I couldn't lead their eyes back to the group.

Eddie:

I nodded when the thusfar-unknown girl asked for confirmation of my name, then readied my wheelchair for a dash across the car-park: I got my keys out ready, too.

When I saw Alice's "all-clear" signal, I pressed the fob to activate my central-locking and unlock my car then motored my wheelchair over the bumpy, uneven terrain leading to this edge of the car-park, carelessly bumping down a kerb so hard I nearly bounced out of my seat when I reached tarmac. My central-locking was silent and invisible because I hadn't set my alarm to full-alert when Alice and I had left it, so-as not to draw any attention. As I set off, I told everyone I'd unlocked the central-locking, and I assumed they were hot on my wheels keeping up behind me.

When everyone was strapped safely into my car, and I'd managed to stow my wheelchair and get behind the wheel myself, I started the engine and we were off. I'd had to remind someone my car was British right-hand-drive, as they'd attempted to get in the driver's door themselves, but there were no other problems. As I set off, I reminded myself it was a much better idea to drive slower and not bring much attention rather than setting of at a tyre-screeching rate of knots and bringing definite Alien attention to my car. As we pulled out of he car-park, I glanced around at my passengers to see who had sat where, mostly out of curiosity but also to check they had their seatbelts on...

Reece took shotgun, going around the car after almost climbing into the driver's seat. He buckles in and sinks into his seat, watching suburbia roll by through half-closed eyes.

Kasey crawls in the back seat behind Reece and buckles in. She leans forward, her head between her knees, her arms wrapped around her head, her face shielded. Her breathing is steady, but tears are streaming down her face. She wonders what kind of cruel nightmare this must. Not only are her family and friends in danger, the only person out of their small band of renegades who was even close to being in her situation was Reece. She sits in this position the entire car ride, unspeaking.

Torrence wedged herself down beside Kasey, a reassuring hand on her friend's shoulder.  She worriedly peeked out of the window as the car began to move, drawing her hands protectively in towards her chest, worrying that their escape would be discovered and that they'd be captured.

Christina replied to Alice over her shoulder. "Christina. Nice of you to ask. Oh, where are you going?"  She remarked as Alice began wandering in a random direction.  Christina shrugged and gestured for the others to keep up with her.  She began to sneak up on a side door.

GM

Within the Center, the Program had apparently ended. Teens wandered freely along the halls and moved through the lobby en route to various games and activities.  Peeking in through the window, one could see a group of girls standing near the front desk engaged in an animated discussion.
The receptionist in Fuchsia was nowhere in sight, although the list sat on the front desk.

Reece looks into the backseat. "Hey, where's Autumn?" he asks.

Torrence
"Didn't she come with us?" Torrence replied to Reece, twisting to look into the back seat as well.

The observation came too late to contemplate going back if she hadn't gotten into the car, as the GPS dutifully beeped that they had arrived at the address Alice had given them.

It was an average neighborhood- mostly three bedrooms with a small patch of lawn diving the cookie cutter houses that all resembled one another.  As the car came to a stop, a blond woman exited the house and walked down to the car.

"You must be Alice's friends." She greeted them. "I am her friend Jenny."
Jenny had blond hair with expertly applied highlights, light blue eyes and a faint sunburn making the skin of her face appear light pink and rosy. Jenny stood at about 5'6'' and was an average weight, although the long Grey sweater made her appear very slim.

"Please, come in."

Jenny led them into the living room, gesturing for them to sit. Several magazines dotted the coffee table such as People and Parade.

"Alice told me that you've discovered the... unfortunate plot and desire to acquire the morphing ability. I have the Andalite's Gift here for you- but is there anything you'd like to discuss first? No doubt this all seems very surreal to you right now."

As Christina crept up to the front door, she observed. "The assembly must be over. Every one's walking around now."

Trying the door still revealed it to  be locked.

"We could try and sneak in through the window."She wondered. "But that's probably being watched. It's the only bathroom through, so they can't exactly close it off and wait for us."

Peering back in the door, she suddeny gestured.
"Look, there's some girls from school. Maybe we can get them to let us in."

Kasey enters the house, standing as near to the front door as possible. Her posture is stiff, her hands clenched into fists. She responds quickly to Jenny, "They saw me at the lock in, one of them grabbed me. My family is all over the news due to my dad's campaign. I can't go home, or they're going to...infest me." She swallows hard, her eyes blearing, "I can't keep helping this...but if they don't already, they're going to have my family. If I go home, I get infested. If I don't go home, my father goes after every person at the lock in, including these guys." She gestures towards Reece, Torrence (and Autumn?). She steps away from the wall, and swipes at her eyes. "Can you help me? You and your family obviously have resources to things and ideas we can't can't even conceive..."

"We do." Jenny said calmly, not in a superior or condescending manner, but in the calm statement of fact.  She produced a box of Kleenex from some where and moved closer to Kasey, offering the box to her.

"Don't trouble yourself with concerns for your family regarding your identities. While its impossible for us to guarantee their safety from infestation - and I am truly sorry for that, but that shall be up to you and your friends. There's a way that we can 'trick' the Yeerks into believing that you are not a threat.

Some of our group pose as spies within the organization and have developed a way to capture a Yeerk and behave as a Controller, fooling all current Controllers.  With a bit of deception on our part, we could have a few of our operatives pose as you in order to convince the Controllers that you are not a threat."

Eddie:

After dropping off my passengers at the address the GPS lead us to, I immediately started heading back to pick up the others. I could wait a little longer to get this power-thing, but who knew how long the others would be safe near that Yeerk building? No, it was best to get them to safety first.

Alice:

When I reached the boundary of the car park and the woodlands, I wove through a few trees and made my way back to the group. The first of them I came across was Damien, who seemed to have hung back behind the others. The rest were ahead of him, following Christina to the building from which we'd escaped.

It entered my mind that he might take this opportunity to try and ask me some of the questions he hadn't wanted to speak in front of other people... I was a little wary he might ask something that would be difficult for me to answer without lying...

Damien had stayed behind while the others went ahead. A glazed look in his eyes, they weren't focused on anything in particular, otherwise known as spacing out. His mind seemed to enter his body again when he noticed he was alone. Intending to follow the others he stopped noticing Alice. Glancing aorund quickly we walked up to her, now was his chance. "Hey... uhm... Alice?"he asked uncertainty seeming hesitant. "I need to ask you something..." He shifted from foot to foot. "As you know your dad called my cell earlier, it doesn't make any sense...."he stopped for a second. "One, and this is the biggie, my phone was shut off, how could he possibly have called it? Two, why did he call me, he said he looked up my number on 411, but how did he know to look for me I didn't know you until today and he probably didn't know I existed. Three, I understand he could have possibly have used a GPS system or something but my phone was turned off, besides couldn't he just call you? You did have your cell phone, I saw you take it out..."

He stopped scratching his arm,"It just doesn't add up, at all, no matter how I run it through my head it doesn't make sense..."
That'sssss a very nice possssst you have there... It'd be a sssshame if something happened to it...

Kasey pushes the box of tissues away. She leans back against the wall, her body visibly sagging. "What exactly are you intending to do? How are your people able to do this? I mean...can't the yeerks tell who's infested, and who's not? And if your people are posing as me...what happens to me?" She clenches and unclenches her jaw a few times, rubbing her eyes again.

Reece nods slowly as Kasey speaks. "For that matter, how the hell do you guys intend to pose as us? My girlfriend got..." he coughed to keep himself from gagging. "N-nabbed. She got nabbed. Yoinked. You know the drill." He smiled weakly. "Point is, if there's really a thing or whatever taking her over, if it knows what she knows at all it should be able to tell me from you pretending to be me, unless you've got some damn good pretenders back there."

Kasey hesitates for a moment, then moves towards Reece. She sits next to him, shooting him an apologetic glance.

"Perhaps I was unclear as you seem to think this is my decision. What I should have said is that if you would like, my operatives will pose as you from a highly advanced set of prosthetics, science and of course, a great deal of information provided by you.

We have a way of acting like a Yeerk that has attempted to infest us by way of suspending its ability to attach to our brain. Its all very complicated and I can't get into it in too much detail presently.  If you decide to do this, all those decisions you mentioned - such as what you decide to do in the time our operative poses as you-" She nods to Kasey, "- to working with your operative to know every detail of your life. I assure you that if you work with them, the Operative will not be detected. They've fooled the most paranoid of Controllers.

I can see that you are very upset however, and perhaps need time to think this over.

Are you prepared to acquire the Andalite's Gift?"

Kasey closes her eyes, and pushes back against the couch. She mutters, "An operative? What is this, a war, now? Are we a bunch of spies? Can I still go home when I want to? I don't think I can be away from my family, and from my friends for...for, however long this takes." Kasey rubs her eyes again, then opens them. "But the gift." Her voice cracks, and she clears her throat. "Yes. The gift. I'm ready." She looks from Reece to Torrence.
