Just now noticed about Marco
« on: September 26, 2008, 06:04:46 AM »
I just started reading through the books again, and I noticed that Jake refers to Marco's tactical ability in the first couple pages, when he says that he has more games at home but Marco has this uncanny ability to analyze games and figure out all the little tricks. I just thought that was cool that she laid that out that early and weird that I never noticed it before. But then after the first read I tended to skim read the first couple chapters by reflex.

Yea, I remember reading that too.  But in "Visser," when Eva tells Edriss that Marco inherited his strategic ability from her, or in her words "the ability to see from Point A to Point B. He got that trait from me." i thought it came off as a bit forced on her part.

I have to agree with Filmstu, I think the "A to B" thing was a bit overplayed. I don't know, I didn't really like Visser. To me, it just didn't fit in with the other books. It was too serious, too doom and gloom, for my taste anyways.
But, yes, Marco's one smart cookie!

I liked Visser, because it was doom and gloom, people from all walks of life, though yea, I dont think she would say the A to B thing. But nonetheless, figuring out video games is interesting because it has nothing with the direct A to B but more the manipulation of a set of rules.
Until then we fight.

Well, it's basically the fundamental component to Marco's entire character...

The whole disconnected ruthlessness, dealing with that stuff through humor so he can focus on the task at hand.

Thats not really valid, humor and disconnection do not problem solve. The video game reference has to mean something to the effect of he is able to naturally manipulate situations based on given data.

Um, yes.  Exactly.  Marco was the most strategically intelligent of the kids, and that was there even before the war, as the videogame intuition shows.

Why is this complicated?

Because video games are more tactics, less strategy. So I guess he was good at both.

I liked Visser because it was very real. Andalite Chronicles was good, but the Time Matrix is far less believable then the very complex, devious, and relatable invasion plans.

That is true, but Marco seems like the type of person that never wasted a moment.
