Error I noticed in Boom 8
« on: July 11, 2014, 10:00:06 PM »
I'm re-reading the series (3rd time) and I couldn't help but stop when I read this odd line from Ax:

"But still, I was about a billion miles from my home world"

Using the power of google I learned that Pluto is aprox. 3.6 billion miles away!!
And the giant Saturn is only 1.2 billion miles away!
The strangest part of all of this is the sun is about 1 billion miles away too! So according to Ax we are as close to the Sun as we are to the Andalite home world!

Just a small error i noticed but annoyed me none the less ;)

I'm sure he meant to say lightyears.  ;D

Either that or it was just an exaggeration.

I'm betting an Andalite mile is different from a human mile :P

Honestly, that's all I've got.

The strangest part of all of this is the sun is about 1 billion miles away too! So according to Ax we are as close to the Sun as we are to the Andalite home world!
93 million miles is the average Earth-to-sun distance. Saturn is more than ten times as far away.

I'm sure he meant to say lightyears.  ;D
Haha. The entire Milky Way is only about 100,000 light years across. The Andromeda galaxy is roughly 2.5 million light years away. 1 billion is... like, several-galactic-superclusters-away levels of far. Almost too far to bother thinking about... though, honestly, do we ever hear that the Andalite planet is within our galaxy? How does Z-space travel work, exactly?

Sorry, astronomy nerd >.<

Just a small error i noticed but annoyed me none the less ;)
Nah, there are KASU's littered throughout the series. Don't let them annoy you. They're part of its charm. Haha ^_^

Doesn't Ax say how far away the Andalite home world is at one point? ...I want to say #5 but don't quote me on that because I'm too lazy to look. <.<

But yeah. My assumption is he wasn't really trying to be precise there so much as trying to say "it's really far away."

So a billion miles is way too close, and a billion lightyears is way too far. I guess we'll just chalk that up to a KASU. Then again, even if it's not a billion lightyears away, it may as well feel like a billion to him.

I'm going to go with "Ax doesn't know exactly how far a mile is, only that it is considered a very long distance to humans" as my explanation.  Not a KASU.  Just Ax's unfamiliarity with human measurements this early on in the series.

I mean, come on.  If he'd wanted to use an actual scientifically accurate distance, any fool knows you'd have to at least put it in metric.  :P

Ax is an American. He doesn't need no un-American measurement system. Yes he's American, because he saved America. Who wouldn't give him the purple heart and call him a proper patriot?

'Murka...!

Let's face it, the Andalites are the alien versions of Americans! Hork-Bajir are alien versions of Hodor. No idea what the Taxxons are like =P

Taxxons?  The obsessive over-eaters?  Um, it doesn't get much more American than that.  :P

Obviously, Andalites are from Canada.  They are Canadese.

. . . In seriousness, though, I'd probably put them somewhere between Japan (they have a similar concept of honor, I think), and America (the arrogance and self-righteousness).

Ax is an American. He doesn't need no un-American measurement system.
*sigh*

Well, Ax is pretty much an Andalite teenager, so he was probably just exaggerating, like kids do.

My favourite KASU, though, is in Animorphs 18: The Decision, when Ax claims a Seagull has talons. Although, perhaps this is remedied in Michael Grant's Gone: due to the FAYZ mutating everything that lives inside the bubble, Astrid finds a Seagull that has grown, you guessed it, TALONS. So, either Applegrant know very little about Seagull biology, or they're predicting an inevitable evolution in seafowl.

speaking of errors, 93 million miles is less than 1/10 of a billion miles. earth is nowhere near a billion miles from the sun. a billion is a thousand millions. and 93 is not about 1000.

Btw your post is called error i noticed in "boom" 8

However, you are correct. there is no star within a billion miles of our sun. applegate, for those of you that have not noticed yet, is, in fact, an idiot. I do not base this on tiny little insignificant science errors. you should be warned as soon as possible. if you are collecting the series, stop. now. just stop. its to late for me. but you can all save yourselves. do. not. finish. the. series.
