I forgot he was labeled a traitor. Claxter's a nice guy, though, and as long as you're not a personally detestable individual, he can overlook things. If you had the best intentions at heart, he'll try to see past the flaws. I forget Serid's backstory, but I don't think he's a personally bad guy. Maybe a refresher is in order. Of course Claxter's establishing introduction is running away from battle, and stealing a ship. A paragon of honor he is not.
