Andalite shredders?
« on: July 13, 2012, 12:12:24 AM »
Hello, all!

First of all, am I correct in remembering that Andalites had hand-held shredders as well as the ship-sized ones?  Does anyone know what the hand-held ones looked like?

The reason I am asking is because I am making an Andalite costume for Dragon*Con and would like to wear some sort of a weapon belt with a gun to cover the belt which will be holding my "hind end" to my body. I really don't want to end up cutting holes in my body suit to disguise the harness underneath my clothes, if you know what I mean!

Thanks a bunch!

They definitely had hand held ones but I don't recall ever getting a detailed description of them. I always pictured them looking like the Type II Phasers from TNG.

Eh, I don't think the hand-held ones were ever described in the books either, but here on RAF we have a couple of pics of them anyway.

Take your pic (ha!) or make up your own.

Well, I wasn't really picturing them as Star-Trekkish, because phasers are really too boxy, I think. I was picturing them more silver and rounded, like the picture below but definitely all silver and without all of the rings. But smaller.

I think that the picture above isn't too shabby for something that the andalites would have made.  Take a look into your imagination and think of their dome ships and their fighters.  These ships are cute and round in contrast with the sharp and evil Yeerk vessels.

The cool thing about this is that your can make your own, post it online, and then it could be accepted by the animorphs community as 'what a shredder looks like.'  There is a lot of deviantart of some of the aliens from the series that is pretty much the only visual representations we have.  I accept them as pictures of these things we have no official art for.

Its pretty cool you're making an Andalite costume, I hope we can get a pic of it when its done.  :)

Really the only clue I think we would have about Andalite shredders is that they would have to be pretty light weight since Andalites dont have any arm strength.   It did have a dial for different strengths, but that can easily be made.  The pic looks pretty good :).

the dracon beams are fairly well described, and in one of the books (andalite or hork bajir chronicles) it is stated that they are adapted from shredders, in fact, the andalite picking them up didn't know they had been changed until the examined them more closely.  given the rate of change of yeerk technology and the fairly short timescale of the series, it leads me to believe that shredders looks a lot like dracon beams.

Russianspy, that's a very astute observation! Thanks for the tip! I always kinda pictured them as a modded dracon beam, but with more rounded Andalite features. However, if that's what the books say, that's what goes! LOL. Thanks!
