<No, it shouldn't,> Terenia agrees. <But...it is. I guess.> She laughs ruefully. <This is insane. I can't believe we're even considering it. I mean, there's three of us, for starters. And you're a...well an alien! And we're in the middle of a war.> She laughs again, trying to calm her nerves.

Zorish glances back at Derrel, wrinkling his nose at the homeless man's stench. "Who invited you in on the conversation?" he snaps before turning back to Mike.

"Just what are you implying, human?" he asks, taking another, probably unnecessary sip of Scotch. "Please, spell it out for me."

"I think normally I would, but my new lifestyle change probably requires a change in policy as well. Besides, I've been paying attention to you ever since you started talking to my friend here anyway." Derrel said.

<Three of us doesn't seem quite so strange,> Corliss says coyly.  <Perhaps it's foolish.  Stupid.  Naive.  I don't care.  I...I feel so much more...I don't know.  Alive, this way.  Does that sound ridiculous?>

Mike gives Derrel a distasteful look.  "Thanks for your help, but you'd best get yourself under control, mate," he says pointedly, hoping that Illim will understand his meaning.  "We're having a conversation.  Sort of, private, like."

He  turns and squints at Zorish.  "I reckon you know what I'm implying, Sub-Visser," he sighs, waving the bartender over for another beer.  "You and Corliss are very much alike, because Corliss had what you have.  He believes what you believe.  He gave up his career because he couldn't fool himself anymore.  Couldn't oppress another living being for his own benefit, dismiss me or his previous hosts as beneath him.  Couldn't continue serving a corrupt government that criminalized his belief in equality.  Common bloody decency.  He decided he would rather risk dying than continue to fight for something he didn't believe in."  He takes his fresh glass of beer.  "That makes him braver than you'll ever be."

<Yes,> Terenia says bluntly. <But...I feel the same way.> Her palps twitch with discomfort. <Corliss, after my sister di- after I killed my sister I thought that was it for me. Everyone I cared about is dead. Everyone I was fighting this damned war for was gone. But you...you make me feel like maybe there's still a thing or two worth fighting for.>

She is glad, once again, that she is incapable of blushing in her current form. <Strangely enough, you remind me I'm still human.>

"I don't have to live in squallor and pretend to have some grand cause to treat my host like a sentient being," Zorish scowls. "And choosing that life does not make your Corliss brave, it makes him a fool." He glances around and lowers his steadily more slurred voice. "Host sympathy only becomes a crime when you go around brandishing it like a damned banner," he hisses. "Whatever the Empire stands for, it likes order. Order for its people and order for its hosts. If that means they must turn a blind eye to a Yeerk who treats his host kindly, then so be it."

Zorish can feel the heat rising in Tamora's cheeks. He knows that he is treading on dangerous ground, but the Scotch seems to have loosened his tongue far more than he would like. Tamora's internal commentary is only making it worse.

<<Maybe he's right,>> she was saying. <<What if we're only hurting ourselves in the long run, staying with the Empire?>>

<<Fool,>> Zorish responds. <<As long as we are with the Empire we are protected, can't you see that? No one, not even Visser Three, is going to murder a Sub-Visser without reason. We are safe. You are safe.>>

<<I still want to talk to him.>>

<<I know everything you want to say. It is pointless. Pointless and dangerous.>>

<<I don't care. Please.>>

Zorish shakes his head and, rather than respond, takes another sip of Scotch.

Derrel is kind of disappointed when Mike brushes him off. He gets up and walks back to an empty table to continue drinking alone.

<Not alone,> Illim reminds him, chiming in for the first time in a few minutes. <To be fair, they didn't invite you over. But it could be to protect us too, you know? As I'm sure you heard, that Yeerk is a sub-Visser. And there's certain protocol I'm sure even rebels use when speaking with one of them. Don't take it too hard. I never do,> he says cheerfully.

<Thank you, sir,> Serid nods gratefully for the dismissal of his actions. He supposes he has been away from any Andalite sort of sense of order for quite a long time. And any influence Illim's remarkable lack of respect for authority and propriety may have had on him cannot have helped.

<Should I talk with the Imperial again, I will seek out additional information from him. In the meantime, I shall leave you two to speak until I am summoned. Thank you for addressing my questions.> Serid gives a final, small bow. As he turns away, he glances at Efaen, noting her unmistakably unpleasant expression before walking back towards the Bar. He can feel her eyes on him, and his back straightens in response.

Jade followed him to the rock sitting beside him looking out over the lake. The light glittered across the surface of the water. She was close to his side, and she wondered what was appropriate to show in such an event. She still didn't understand what she felt for him. As she thought about it she laid her head onhis shoulder.

As Lucan and Jade sat on the rock and looked out over the lake she laid her head on his shoulder. He took his arm that was wrapped around her shoulder and gently moved it down and in between their bodies so it rested naturally on his knee. Lucan then reached over and gently clasped her hand and interlaced it with his fingers. Her warm skin was stark contrast to his cool skin, but felt rather nice and caused his spots to briefly flash a bright pink. He then took a deep breath and began speaking in his soft, watery voice.

"I know the pain of not being able to see your home world or your family again." Lucan reached up with his free hand and stroked the silver stripe that began at the top of his head, right at the hairline and continued down to the base of his neck. It was as wide as his finger and perfectly straight. "This mark is known on my planet as Pyhecrsahd or Banish Mark. I dishonored my family by not being by my fathers side and hearing his last words of death. Because of this crime I was Marked and forbidden to return to Fringe on pain of death." Lucan takes a deep shuddering breath and looks to be holding back tears. "The fear of having to live in a new and strange world and the sadness of never returning to your family is something that I have had to face these 5 long years." Lucan says sadly while looking out onto the lake.

A slight breeze ruffles the petals of the Nuca flower tucked behind Jades ear gently. Lucan softly squeezed her hand and continued speaking. "I feel that you are the one being I can count on now Jade. I do not wish to be separated from you again and have decided to stay by your side from this moment on. We are two beings that are unfortunately separated from our kind forever and we can help each other through the pain and sorrow and fear in this new life. Do you agree, my love?" Lucan spoke softly with conviction and adoration in his voice.

<A controller is someone with a Yeerk in their head. A Yeerk is a parasite that controls a host through their brain. You are still aware, and can think, but you have no control over your own body. The Yeerk has access to your memories, and all of your most guarded secrets. It is the Yeerks that we are at war with, though not all Yeerks are enemies. Some hosts are voluntary for complicated reasons that differ between them, and some Yeerks oppose the government that we fight. Those Yeerk rebels that only take voluntary hosts can usually be trusted to a certain extent.>

Candice's expression contorted with revulsion as he spoke of Yeerks and hosts. She let most of her anger flow away with the new subject and turned a softer expression on him.

"Why would anyone want a Yeerk inside of them? Memories are private, not for anyone to know every detail of." She thought over why he wasn't at war at the moment, and taking a break here but let the thought fade with other curiousities.

<I don't know why anyone would be voluntary. You would have to ask one of them. Personally I'd take my blade to my own throat if the thought ever crossed my mind that being a servant would be better than my current life.> Claxter said.

The breeze ruffling the flower, caused the flower to brush against the point of her ear and she trembled slightly as her ear was sensitive. She held his hand in both of hers and when he spoke if always staying by her she looked up at him with bright eyes. No one, not even her people, had shown this kind of tenderness to her. Then he called her something she never thought anyone would.....his love. Love? Could that be what she felt? Why her heart flipped when she looked in his eyes, why cadyanas filled her stomach when he touched her? She smiled up at him, her eyes bright with hope and tears threatening to spill.

Mar mulls over this thought and suddenly gets a bit of a grin. There were two things clear about what was happening. One: Salem's name was Tobias and he was more than what he appeared to be. Two: This Rathien fellow could follow Tobias through the multiverse at will. Otherwise, how could he be chasing the trader? The second point was what really interested Mar. If that was true....

"Mmmm.....what if I could offer you a target that an entire Empire's military hasn't been able to track down?" states Mar, folding his arms behind his back. "Granted the target's location is...not in a typical universe, but I can give you the means to get there. Assuming that you can travel between such things yourself. You seem ready to relax in this temporal dive for the moment, but it's just an offer. I may be weak here, but..."

Mar chuckles, half to himself and half to Rathien. "....that isn't true in a few other places."

Lucan looked down at Jade and into her gorgeous Lupymd eyes that were bright with emotion and what looked like tears. He assumed that they were tears of joy though because of the smile that was on her face. He felt her hold his hand in both of hers and the close proximity they were in was affecting him. Lucan realized that at that moment no more words were needed because he realized that he had said enough. He had no intention of calling her 'My love', but it had seemed so natural that he said it automatically. From the way that Jade was holding his hand and smiling with tears of joy shining in her eyes she had discovered her feelings for him and she felt the same.

As he stared at her with his bright green eyes and the golden pupil sparkled within, Lucan smiled. He took his free hand and gently caressed Jades cheek, the warmth of her skin again was a contrast to the chill of his, but he marveled in it. He then leaned forward until their foreheads met and softly whispered in a voice that carried much emotion and seemed to come from deep within his heart.

"Jade, E muja oui."

Ewa nodded as Vogefac sat down, but also gave him a bit of a puzzled look.  Not quite the manners I would have expected.  He's certainly not supposed to be pretending to be human though.  "Are you just looking for some company, or....?"  She let the rest of the question trail off expectantly.

After a moment she turned her attention back to Keshin.  "Mmm, well, all of my previous dealings--legal or otherwise--have ranged farther afield than most people here come from.  At least most people that I've met thus far.  Puts me at a large disadvantage for the moment, since I really don't understand how," she paused as if carefully choosing a word, "transactions generally take place around here."

With a couple fingers, Ewa traced out random patterns on the tabletop--just to give one of her hands something to do.  She was tempted to order a drink just so she'd have it as a conversational prop, but that had ended up leading to some questionable judgement not all that long ago.

"It seems strange to me that you'd be against going after anyone with allies here.  I mean, of course you have to be sensitive to the social and political powers you'd be interfering with--and there are probably some people who'd have to be worth your life to go after--but..."  Ewa half smiled and raised her eyebrows.  "Who else would anyone want you to kill?"
