Changing the Covers (Not about the relaunch)
« on: February 10, 2011, 07:22:55 PM »
This is all hypothetical. I started thinking about the covers of the book after writing the last thread, "Our Top Fives". Someone mentioned that all, or most of them, sucked. I disagree. However, I do think that A LOT of the book covers are far too bland (especially for the series content) or just stupid. The cover of a book is the most important thing, next to the book's title. It's the first thing that we look at. You'd think that a series about children tunring into animals would have much more interesting morphs. Instead, we got bunnies, honey bees, and a multitude of other rodents and insects.

Sure, there were also a lot of interesting cover morphs. We got to see everyone's battle morphs, and most of our beloved character's flight morphs. We got a look at some of the aliens in the series--which helped, if you were really bad at imagining what they looked like yourself. We even saw Tobias morphing into Ax, which was awesome.

My main problem with the books is that, sometimes, the covers would show morphs that weren't acquired in the book they're based on, or show the least interesting morphs acquired in the book.

So, if you could, what would YOU change the covers to?

I'd make book the #1 cover be either Jake morphing a Tiger or Homer

The Second David Trilogy book would be Jake either going Dragonfly or Tiger

Book 26 would be Jake morphing a Howler

I actually wouldn't have Jake morph the tiger in the Invasion. I think it was great for the Attack.

It's Jake's favorite morph so I thought it'd be perfect for the very first(better than that lizard that he only uses once) It'd also be nice for the second David book since the little picture on the other side of the cover could be Jake and David's showdown at the end. As for 26, I think his Holwer morph was the only suitable one

Howler would have been awesome, too. It's a good thing that they showed the Howler's on the inside cover.

See, I personally like the books that show the Alien Morphs. Seeing them change into Hork-Bajir, Andalites, and Taxxons was just awesome! I mean, seeing Cassie morph the Yeerk and Hork-Bajir caught my attention. If I were a kid and saw a kid turning into a dog, as girl turning into a rat, a boy turning into a honey bee, and a kid turning into a bird, I would have thought, "Wow...lame!" The badass morphs are the ones that we love, because it really grabs at your attention.

I did not say they sucked! I just wasn't a fan~ Idk though, for the most part, the covers never bothered me as a kid and it wasn't till I got older that I felt they were kind of tacky, but whatevs they're for a kid's series. It still kind of bothers me though just how some of the covers are so laughable compared to the serious nature of some of the books. Bleh, I do find them a little nostalgic though. Obviously I'm conflicted on this. Oops forgot to say I agree with what you said up there.

I actually think that the first ten or so books work well. Fluffer McKitty makes sense, because I think that was really the only new morph Rachel acquired (But I might be wrong: she could have acquired the Bald Eagle). The Encounter, the Message, the Predator all make sense as well. I'm not sure if they acuired flies in the Capture or earlier. The Stranger works because Rachel acquired her grizzly at the time. The Alien is great. I'm not so sure about the secret, because Cassie acquires the wolf in the encounter. The Android makes sense.

I'm not saying that the later books don't make sense. There are many books that actually use the animals that they acquired. So I wouldn't change any of the first ten books.

The only ones that ever bothere me were 18 and 28. 18 because it was the first Ax book I'd bought, and reading Animorphs was already a one way ticket to being uncool at my school, so I was embaressed to be reading a book with that looked so "weird".

28 was just lame.

Try being eighteen and standing around the little kid's section at the library, squinting at the books and trying to scope out any Animorphs books.

I actually think that the first ten or so books work well. Fluffer McKitty makes sense, because I think that was really the only new morph Rachel acquired (But I might be wrong: she could have acquired the Bald Eagle).

She acquired a shrew as well. Cassie then pointed out that Rachel had more morphs than the rest of them at that point and wondered if there was a limit.

As for the covers, I never really had a problem with them. For the most part the morphs on the cover were indicative of what they were going to do later that day.

The Anole for example. Jake morphed that to track Chapman and discovered the Yeerk Pool entrance. Marco morphs a spider in book 10, which is the morph he uses to discover Erek was an android disguised by a hologram. Rachel morphs a Crocodile in twelve and we find that she's allergic to it and we learn of Hereth Illint. Tobias morphs a hawk in book 3 because, well, he's a hawk and can't morph into anything else.

That said, there are a few books I would change to fit the utilitarian theme.

For example, Book 9: The Secret. I would have totally had her morphing the skunk and spraying Visser Three in the photo pic underneath.

I would replace all of the dark haired Tobias models with a blond kid.

And that's all I've got.

One thing I should mention, the French and UK versions of book 5 actually does have the lobster instead of the gorilla. The gorrilla is a much nicer cover.

Actually, if I was going to be changing anything about the original covers, it wouldn't be the morphs. It would be the quotes on the cover that often made NO SENSE with the plot of the book they were on.
