Book Name Meanings
« on: February 08, 2011, 12:17:07 PM »
Looking back over my previous posts, I realize I'm coming off a lot like a whiny little b****. I apologize for that, as I shouldn't take it out on you guys for any beef I have with the series.

Ok. So, in order to rectify that, I'm complaining less. Right now. With a fresh new topic that I hope will be important.

Book name meanings.

K.A.'s books each have a name meaning. For example, #1 refers to the invasion of their planet, #4 refers to them hearing a message from Ax, #6 refers to Jake being captured, and so on. Some are very clear cut, but others, not so much. So... what do you guys think each book's name comes from? What is its meaning?

The book names were just picked by Scholastic. They very rarely had anything to do with anything, except in a really vague sense.

I think all decisions for the books should have Bern left to KA, not Scolastic.

Speaking from experience, coming up with an appropriate title for your story can be the most challenging part of writing. To date my favorite book titles either show up somewhere in the flow of the story, or they refer to the main character or subject of the story.

Jennifer Government
Jurassic Park
Prey
Sphere
The Harry Potter books.

The important thing is to come up with the story first, of course. But sometimes if you don't have a title in mind it can slow you down.

Yeah, most of the titles have some connection to the books. Though I'm not sure I remember all the titles. A title is important, and when I get that certain itch to start a story that I inevitably won't finish, I usually just throw a placeholder name out there. Like Mundane Life story for a story about regular people with regular problems where magic and mythology or whatever doesn't come into play.

Just a small correction-- Marco's revelation to his dad is in #45. :) But otherwise, yeah, that fits.

I think the mutation was more about the cave people than the Horks. That was the "Atlantis" book, right?

Yeah, it was.

38.) The Arrival - Some Andalites finally arrive.
40.) The Other - ...The other Andalites on Earth?
47.) The Resistance - Could be a reference to the free Horks, or to the humans fighting in that book.
48.) The Return - The return of David.

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned:

37) The Weakness: Rachel's weakness as a leader
42) The Journey: A journey inside the human body
43) The Test: Tobias testing himself by facing up to Taylor
52) The Sacrifice: The Anis blow up the Yeerk pool, sacrificing probably hundreds of Yeerks.  Could also refer to Ax's dilemma about sacrificing earth to the Andalites.

Other people's meanings of the books are pretty spot-on, I think.

And I think a few of the book's meanings are beyond explanation.  #24?  The Suspicion?  Nowhere in the book was anybody even slightly suspicious of anything.  The Helmacrons showed up and immediately told everybody what was what, without giving anybody time to be suspicious of them (unless you count the very very beginning of the book, but that's pretty weak).  If anybody can come up with a plausible explanation for that one, I will give karma for a week.
