Well, it wasn't quite like peer pressure...
« on: September 20, 2010, 01:41:30 AM »
Or maybe it was...?

At any rate, I think it's been for the the better part of the year that Marie and Billy (and later some of the 7 other RAFians I've now met) have been trying to convince me to join the forum.  So here I am, finally :)

To be perfectly honest, I have not read any of the books... yet. I've been saying I will for a while, and I have had the first 6 on loan to me from Marie for a couple years now, so I suppose it's about time to jump in and get started, what with joining RAF and all.  I'll keep y'all updated on my progress - maybe that will keep me and my sometimes short attention span accountable.

Sooo, as for an introduction... I'm Lauren... born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Actually, Berkeley, more specifically. And no hippie jokes, please, no matter how much Billy tries to convince you to make them. Somehow I ended up settling in Houston after coming here to go to Rice U.  I guess it happened by default.  Right now I'm working as a tech at a referral-based specialty veterinary hospital, which works out well, at least for the moment, because my plan is to go to vet school. It was one of those childhood dreams that took me about 15 years to realize wasn't actually unattainable or silly and might be worth pursuing.

What else... hobbies and interests?  I feel like I don't get to spend much time on anything but work right now, but when I do get time, I like making jewelry, horseback riding, hiking and camping, skydiving, reading, and anything that has to do with music - whether it be listening, going to concerts and shows, or playing my cello. I'm game for anything from classical to oldies to hip-hop to bluegrass; I can find something I like in almost any genre.

Other things that are useful to know about me: I'm a coffee fanatic (alright, "snob" might be an appropriate term as well), I love the series Firefly, I HATE, LOATHE, and DESPISE carrots (and yet love the color orange), and I am absurdly neurotic about my dog(s) [I'm sure I'll be introducing them at some point... one is mine (Jolie), and one is a foster (Ranger), who may end up as mine if I can convince my landlords that it's a fantastic idea to let me adopt him :)]. Oh, and bad grammar makes me very sad.

Ok, I'm pretty sure this post has gone on a bit too long, and it's WAY past my bedtime.  Morning always comes sooner than you'd like, especially when it's a Monday.

Welcome to Raf! I want to go to vet school too, but I haven't had the chance yet to work in a vet clinic. How do you like it?
Oh. I'm Patty by the way!

Yay Lauren! I'm so glad you joined! See? I told you these people were nice!

(STAY NICE, PEOPLE!)

I know you you feel about spoilers, so you might want to avoid the Animorphs discussion board until you get into (or even finished with) the series.We often try to hide spoilers, but sometimes we forget.

Actually most people don't bother since we got the ebooks.

*cough* Or since, you know, the series ended 9 years ago.

XD Honestly! This is the only fandom I know where people get so finnicky about spoilers this late. Not that we should spoil it for new readers, obviously. :P Just... they should generally stay away from Animorphs discussions. XD

...But other discussions? :D Other discussions are good. *drags Lauren to various boards* See?

Since Animorphs wasn't that widely read, except by people of a very particular range and set of interests, it presents a great opportunity for folks who come to it late to read it with just as much excitement and newness as we did. I just don't want that experience ruined for anyone, especially if they're the kind of reader who doesn't like spoilers in general.

lol, you should have seen this place back in the day! Even way after the series had ended, only a handful of members had all the books and quite a few still hadn't read them all, so we had to be more careful with spoilers. Since we introduced the ebooks, this hasn't really been an issue because now everyone has access to all the books.

Anyway, I'll shut up now so I don't ruin Lauren's intro thread!

Which is why they should stay away from the Animorphs sections. :P

wHELLcome, Lauren!
I'm Vis... I'm Dameg, another RAFian. I'm here for the visit of the RAFprojects. Usually I don't do it for the new people who've never read the books, but as you said you wanted to begin... Well, you still can join any project you want. For some, you'll need to read the books, for others you don't need to. So please now follow me *Open a heavy door and lead Lauren to a long and dark hallway, with many doors, some in the dark, some with light coming from the other side. Arrive near the first door* Here at your left...

- RAFipedia: http://rafipedia.wetpaint.com/, an encyclopedia headed up by Estelore, our star (a true star, who make light and burn in space... but she has a body to come on Earth);

Next it's...

- the Audiobooks project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=15.0, a full-cast audio version of Animorphs who need more "actors" and voices, headed by Kit Cloudkicker (Jess), MrGuy, Morfowt, and Wildweathel; Here you may have to know the books, at least a little. I'm not sure, so if you wanna join this project, ask the leaders I named.

and here...

- the Graphic Novel project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,416.0.html and http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2276.0.html, a Webcomic headed by Gafrash. Here too, you need to know at least a little the books. But as you seem to like the animals, maybe you can help even before...

You also have...

- the Smiley project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1691.0.html, we make Animated gifs, smileys about Animorphs (Andalites, Hork-Bajirs...); You don't need to read the books at all here ^^

here and facing it is...

- the Translation project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1907.0.html, a recently started project/mutual support group for translations into other languages; currently only in French (Tocade, Anidragon and myself), Chinese (Morfowt), Indonesian (Nat), Swedish (Mira and Zana), and Esperanto (Wildweathel); we translate only the volumes never edited in our countries/languages, to make the ebooks; It's more a project for the not-English-speakers.

Next door is for the special project:

- http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3738.0.html: the adventures of the RAFians; You don't need to know the books at all ^^ It's more about RAF itself and the RAFians than about Animorphs.

At the end it's for the little projects:

- the http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3810.0.html;

- the http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3911.0.html to make the planets we hear about in Animorphs;

- the paper-RPG project: a role-playing game (on table, with paper, pen and dices...) about the World of Animorphs; I head this project, and it'll be write in French at the beginning, but we need help to find, class and write everything we know about the species, the planets, the powers we see in Animorphs, fix them, see what we keep and what we can't keep (because of the KASU, not clear, exception for the main characters/books, etc.), complete the knowledges about species/planets we know and even create new species/planets...; this project will be on my own website, so if you wanna join, ask me the link ^^;

- the RPG project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,4069.0.html to make a video game about Animorphs, with RPGmaker;

- the Command-line game project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3787.0.html for another kind of video game about Animorphs;

- the http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3773.0.html where we count all the people killed by the Animorphs;

- the RAFkaraoke: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3150.0.html and http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,3635.msg245735.html#msg245735, where we make songs (and sing them?)...

- the One RAFian On Volume project: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=5317.0 where everybody take a picture of him/herself with a volume of Animorphs... <= We need a lot of RAFians to participate! You only need a volume of Animorphs (rented if you don't have any) & a camera/webcam.

and some other projects who come and go. Please check the list: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/board,13.0.html
Feel free to visit the other boards too. I only present the projects, but it's a little part of RAF. But be careful staying away from the Animorphs board on the top of the forum, as Marie said. We spoil a lot because almost everybody here have finished the full series.

*Standing in front of Lauren* I hope you enjoyed your visit. Oh, and I also invite you to add your species on this list: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2154.0.html 'coz everybody isn't Human here. And we like to know who is what... For example, as you'll probably see, I'm a Controller (read the 1st volume of Animorphs to understand). ... and if you want, you can add your age too: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,318.0.html... and say where do you live here: http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=5049.0 so Marie can add you on the RAFworld Map!
We also opened a http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?board=36.0 to teach to each others our languages and other stuffs.

May I suggest you call your (future) son Tobias? You'll understand why after reading Animorphs ;)

Now I have to go, I don't invite you for the meal, sorry. *Beginning to go down dark stairs. Lauren can hear a cry coming from the cave.*
Have fun!
*Dameg disappears into the darkness, Lauren is now alone in the hallway*

Lauren's here! Hey ^_^ I'm so glad you decided to join! (I'm Scott, who you met, by the way)

Anyway, yeah, if I were you I'd avoid the Animorphs board altogether until you finish the series if you want to avoid spoilers. On the bright side, that's easy enough to do around here. Plenty of non-Animorphs stuff going on too ^_^

I keep trying to think of some eloquent way to express my excitement that you're here, which quickly degrades into baby-like burbling in my mind and leaves me wondering how to spell "bbvvlvbbahbbblllfff vvv." I think it'd be better if I just don't mention it ;D

Welcome to RAF :)

Marie and Abby are my wonderful RAFsisters ^_^
