Giant mo'foin' saltwater crocodile (Egyptian/Australian).

Not exactly mobile or good for travelling, but I can't see how even a grizzly bear or something similar could even hurt a croc.  That low to the ground, that quick in short bursts, armor-like hide, reptilian hardiness, bone-crushing steel-like jaws?  No non-human animal even stands a chance in close-quarters.  You'd basically need an assault rifle to even put a dent in the thing.

Reptiles > mammals.

Sorry to disagree with you, but hippos are known to be able to bite crocs in half and they are extremely territorial which makes them extremely dangerous.  They're image has really been poisoned by those cartoons which depict them as cute and cuddly, when in reality they're quite deadly.  Their skin is quite thick as well.  The horrible fact about is hippos aren't even carnivorous.  They're herbivores.

Though they can't really swim, unlike crocodiles.  (And if my name origins are correct, Hippopotamus means "river horse" though personally, I think they only vaguely resemble horses . . .)  Sorry, I tend to expend a lot of time studying animals, especially mammals.

Ha!  I'd like to see someone try to saddle and ride one.  ;D

They'd be bitten in half.  What a way to go, death-by-hippo (which, according to my knowlege isn't all that unlikely -- hippos have killed humans . . .).

Yep.  That's why I said "see" not "try".

My error.  Though I do know some people that lack the intelligence, or maybe it's simply arrogance, to attempt such a manuever.  (I recall one in particular . . .)

Hippos kill more people each year than any other African animal (excluding mosquitos).  So yeah.

And I don't know about the biting crocs in half thing, but that's probably true too.  But that being said, I'd be willing to wager that crocodiles kill hippos more often than hippos kill crocodiles.  Hippos are insanely aggressive when provoked, but they're still frightened herd animals, and they do get taken down by predators.

Like lions wiith elephants, a crocodile will only attack a hippo when it's old OR sick OR young AND alone.
This great evil - where's it come from?
How'd it steal into the world?
What seed, what root did it grow from?
Who's doing this?
Who's killing us, robbing us of life and light, mocking us with the sight of what we mighta known?
Does our ruin benefit the earth, aid the grass to grow and the sun to shine?  Is this darkness in you, too?  Have you passed through this night?

Its like what Jake's Yeerk said in #6, every advantage is cancelled out by some disadvantage.  And thus, the savage place we call Earth is born. (Perhaps it's a mere miracle that we humans came to were we are.)

Actually they had a show on Animal Planet (yes, I occasionally watch animal planet) answering that exact question...  Apparently they're pretty close but hippos get the nod by a slim margin

I used to watch Animal Planet all the time (before my satellite went all Soup Nazi (Seinfeld reference) on me, and only let me have about five channels), that's were I got the "bite crocodiles in half" thing, and they also mentioned biting a canoe in half as well.

There's an appetizing combination...croco diles and canoes.

yeah but a croc's underbelly isn't that tough. if a bear could get the croc on it's back, the bear would possibly win.

No question, if the bear did that it would definitely win.

How would a bear get a crocodile on its back, though?  Certainly impossible if the bear's standing on its hind legs and the croc goes for the legs and breaks them, which is probably what would happen.  If the bear were on all fours it may have a chance, but then again that's exposing the head and torso to those insane jaws.

For the record, I'm not talking about the average zoo type crocodiles here, I mean the insane 15 foot long behemoths that weigh as much as a car or two.  Grizzlies are obviously huge too, but they seem to be a little clumsy when dealing with something that low to the ground and streamlined.  They usually go after mammals, not low-slung reptilian rockets with hydraulic heavy machinery for a mouth.
