Nice chapter again, I thought it was interesting to show us mentioning Cassie and then sneaking into her barn!

Seeing Ken find out about his Controller brother should be interesting. I think we discussed the idea of Ken having a Controller in the family on MSN the other day. It's a great idea since Ken being able to hear the thoughts of the host and the Yeerk will create a lot of drama. Since Ken's power is called Telepathy, does that mean he would be able to send messages with his mind as well? (like thought speech but in human form)

Also, Ken's power could be used to introduce the Yeerk Pool (unless you already have an idea). Ken could have read Elfangor's mind before he died and seen/heard information about the Yeerk Pool and the Kandrona.

I'm not sure how the US school system works either, but I'm pretty sure that most of us wouldn't be at that school (due to our characters' ages)

Just a suggestion, but it might be a good idea to show everyone's POV at least once. That way you can do school, work or home life scenes from different view points. Like you said, some of our family could be Controllers, but some of the characters are old enough to have moved out. Speaking of which, you can say that my character lives on his own (if that makes it easier) since I imagine that The Gardens pays better than the zoo I work at!

U.S. school system, for the uninformed:

Age:          Grade:               Type of School in which you'd find one:

9-10           Fourth Grade         Grade School or Middle School
10-11         Fifth Grade            Grade School or Middle School
11-12         Sixth Grade           Grade School or Junior High
12-13         Seventh Grade       Grade School or Junior High
13-14         Eighth Grade          Grade School or Junor High
14-15         Freshman (9th)       High School

To simplify: Most kids go FIRST to Kindergarten, where they learn ABC's and numbers, et cetera. THEN, they go on to Grade School. In small towns, Grade School continues up through the Eighth Grade, followed by High School. In large towns, the schools are divided up, usually with K-3 in "Grade School", 4+5 in "Middle School", and 6-8 in "Junior High", after which the JH kids go directly to High School, like everyone else.
There are some variations, but this is the 'standard' system in the U.S.

Out where I was in California, it was actually K-5 is grade school, 6-8 was middle school (also called junior high by older folk), and 9-12 was high school, and that seemed to be the standard for at least the southern half of California, don't know about the top half, and I don't know where you're setting it, so...might be something to consider. 

And I started kindergarten at 4   And before that, preschool.  There are now commercials about "oh, if you put your kids in preschool they'll be smarter" - it doesn't matter, preschool is just a glorified daycare system where they teach you how to play the kazoo.



And as an edit - I think the idea of doing chapters in other people's perspectives would be a really interesting thing to read and do, but I'm worried, considering how many of us there are, it might stretch out the story quite a bit, going over the same information a couple times maybe.  But I was actually thinking of suggesting doing a couple chapters like that, with other people's p.o.v.'s.

I did know some of that, like I knew that you guys started school at 6 (we start at 4) and that you finished at 18. Poor you guys! I left school at 16 (although most of my class stayed until 18, it is optional) and did a 2 year college course.

Yes, some of them do - the ones I know of, at least.  You pick your own schedule, and they'll usually have part time or full-time, full-time usually being at LEAST four classes, usually five, sometimes six.  So, at least in the community college I went to, you could take one or two at a time, and only be considered part-time.

EDIT AGAIN: We also have online courses, known as "distance ed" or something like that, where you can do them throughout the week at your leasure, and you submit assignments by the saturday night deadline, and only go into class for the final, so you can be full-time and only rarely go to the campus.  Sorta like night courses, but you don't have to get out of your pajamas.

Yah, I went to Pre-School, too, but it doesn't REALLY count.
The school system that I described is used throughout all of Illinois, most of eastern Missouri, and everywhere that I've been in Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. I've been to other states, but I didn't get the chance to ask.

well like you said earlier, there are several variations, it's such a large country that there isn't really JUST one standard as to how the grades are categorized.

Well if Claire wants my character to do anything besides work at The Gardens, then a part time course or an online course would be fine. I'm actually considering taking an online course in real life (yes we have them too!) Not sure what course choices you guys have, but make it something related to working with animals if you can.
