No mention of Mertil or Gafinilan in #41?
« on: February 27, 2009, 07:57:37 PM »
Wasn't the book with those two Andalites #40? The group figures the Yeerks won't bother them anymore, then in 41 Jake has that dream about the Yeerks winning the war. You would think Jake would guess that Visser Three took them afterall, to see what they knew of his enemies. I was rereading those two books, and I find that funny.

well for jake, he was probably more worried about what was happening and about the other animorphs, to really think about the two andalites.

as for KA (or whatever ghostwriter), probably just forgot about those two...

I was thinking he might guess their capture was what caused their secret to come out. But he didn't guess that.

I remember that Mertil was mentioned in another book, maybe 50 or 51.
Maybe after that, they weren't very important characters to write about. Didn't Gafinilan say to leave them alone, after all?

I was somewhat amazed that Mertil, at least, was never even mentioned after the war.  Gafinilan may well have kicked the bucket by that point, but I would really like to have known what became of Mertil.

Another thing that occurred to me just now.  Thinking about the prosthetic limbs they can make nowadays, do you suppose they could make a prosthetic Andalite tail?  That would make Mertil so awesome.

I think Mertil was mentioned again the book where they get the Auxileries, but only in passing.

But I don't think book 40 was meant to be one of the "important" books of the series. It was mostly filler. The only thing that passed onto later books was the term "vecol", and Ax's attitude reguarding handicaps.

Which is a bit of a shame, really. I loved Gafinilan and Mertil.

I imagine Mertil would have stayed hidden after the war was over. After all, he would want to be remembered as a hero who died in battle, not as a vecol. Marco might have made good on his promise to hang out and play video games, though.

I dunno, they might have wanted to remain hidden amongst humans. One would be forever ostracized by his people, and one would have to explain why he chose to let human children and an Andalite cadet face unbeatable odds alone while he himself dared to make deals with the Abomination.

Yeah . . . I think they probably kept their heads down and ask they not be mentioned :P

Just had an awesome fic idea involving a Bionic Andalite who fights crime!  ;D

In the future time line shown in #41, the Yeerks knew everything that the Animorphs knew. The Yeerks would have wiped out or re-enslaved the free Hork-Bajir, possibly destroyed the Chee (or at least some of them) and most likely would have killed Mertil or tortured him for information. Gafinilan could easily have been dead by then, but if not they would have killed him too.

As pointless as this post is, It did remind me that I thought of the andalites as gay when I read this book.

I never had those kinds of thoughts when I was younger. I'm not one of those people that sees two guys living together, and thinks they're gay. Especially two Andalites stuck on a world with Yeerks everywhere.

I didn't think that when I first read it, but when I re-read it later... Oh, yeah. Definitely thought that there was something more going on there. I believe the line <The sound of Mertil's voice is always with me> kind of did it for me.

Sorry. I really don't have any gaydar. It would have to be more blatant for me to even start thinking they might be gay.
