The cloaked man watched from the bushes as more and more of the Yeerk troops filed towards the bar, weapons drawn now. A large number of troops still seemed preoccupied with the empty area of the field where there'd once been a Bug Fighter, but now the two Imperial Bugs also drifted towards him. What he needed was a distraction. He cursed his luck. If the Yeerks had come in, guns blazing, like he expected, he could easily have gotten away in the confusion. It was just his luck that Sergei was the one in charge of his search. He found himself wishing the locals were a bit more volatile. A good gunfight was sure to draw the attention of these Yeerk troops.
He glanced around, looking for something he could use as a distraction. He didn't think he'd be able to hide here long, even with his cloak.
Besides, he thought, I doubt these troops will leave the area until they find me.
He saw a blond woman he knew among the troops. What was her name? Rose, she'd said? She'd been a sweet girl. Southern accent, great sense of humor, but ever since she'd been infested by these Yeerks it seemed all she'd done was try to kill him or capture him. He considered blowing her up, but decided he needed something bigger as a distraction. He didn't think he could take down a shielded Bug Fighter equipped as he was, though.
Across the field, he saw a few ships that looked like scrap. The three scythe-like blades on his gun snapped back to a position lying on top of the barrel. Smiling, he drew an orange cylinder from his belt, tossed it into the air, and fired at it. It flew the thousands of yards, landing next to what might be a derelict Skrit Na freighter.
First try! Either I'm getting better or luckier.
The cylinder began spewing forth a huge cloud of purple-tinted smoke. At the same time, the "blades" snapped back into place around his gun's barrel, and he fired at the ship, though no beam was visible from his weapon. After he held the trigger for a few seconds, the ship blew apart with a deafening CRRAAAACK! raining chunks of Skrit Na freighter and whatever had happened to be inside across the landscape.
"He's over there!" yelled the young man with the Ukrainian accent from somewhere off to his left. The rest of the troops seemed to agree after getting a glimpse of the purple smoke, and most of them began to shuffle off in that direction.
