((Poor Terenia is bossed around so easily.  :-\ ))

Keshin blinks, noticing that Terenia looks rather depressed as she crosses the grass back towards the Bar and to him. Whatever Terenia had been doing has apparently gone horribly awry. <...hmn. She was probably talking to someone she knows within the Empire. And apparently has lost the game, so to speak.>

<That girl's got nothin' but bad luck, Kess. I'm kinda glad we're gonna try an' help 'er.>

<She also seems to be nothing but bad luck. I have no idea how we got into this absurd mess anymore. Next time we hear about a potentially lucrative job, we will evaluate the situation first before acting.>

<Awww, but that's no fun.>

<.................I'm starting to question how we've ever managed to make it this far.>

Keshin then raises his voice slightly so that Terenia is able to hear him and asks, "What happened? Are we clear to leave yet or have you got some old lady you need me to help cross the street?"

Mar scowls a bit, rolls his eyes, but quickly sits down across from Elayne. He drums the fingers of his gauntlet arm on the table idly, which makes an odd sound. "Yes, yes. I understand. I'm glad you're alright, but helping that creature brings neither you or me any benefit. If it lives, it should be no problem of yours whether its joints work or not. ....though I suppose it gives you an occasion to practice your art, doesn't it?"

Mar smiles as this later comment occurs to him. "I have never seen you do it before this point. You seem to be fairly good at it, Elayne. But then again, you couldn't very well have gotten by otherwise." Mar then chuckles. His laugh really does sound a little awkward, though not forced. "I couldn't very well show you how I operate in this Bar. Nor would, come to think of it, would I actually want to. It must be nice having a usable talent like that."

"I never mind the chance to practice. My own ship could use a little more tinkering before I get her back in the air, but there's really no hurry, as I've got no pilot." Elayne smiled to Mar. "So why are you so impatient? So far as I understand, you're here as long as you want to be, right?"

Her eyes turned to his gauntlet, and she tilted her head to the side. "Did you ever call off your contact?" she wondered, watching his hand move. He isn't much of one to hide his emotions, she thought, and then smirked. Course I'm not all the time, either. "And," she continued, "considering what I already know about you, I'm glad you don't have any interest in showing off any more of your skills. You're a little terrifying, you know? I'm glad you seem to like me for some weird reason."

((I actually was going to get to that, but I bet Mar didn't remember. ;) ))

Mar's eyes widen as he suddenly realizes that Elayne is right. He'd forgotten to tell that fool that he was no longer needed! Mar hurriedly draws his finger around the control panel again and brings up the odd holographic screens around him. He then hurriedly types a message out into one of the boxes using the "keyboard" and then closes the system. Mar then breathes a sigh of some relief. "It seems that all of our loose ends have been accounted for. Thank you for reminding me, sweet Elayne." Mar's voice takes on that odd purring quality momentarily, but it quickly fades. It's as if he doesn't want to bring the emotion into their discussions for some reason.

Mar then shrugs a bit. "A lot of people find me frightening, pe--Elayne." Mar blinks and frowns, looking disturbed. He then shakes his head. Why was I compelled to call Elayne that.... "Regardless...it is merely a quality about me...and something to do with my voice. I like you because you like me, Elayne. It is not complicated."

((:D))

Elayne watched Mar manipulate the system with interest, leaning back in her chair as she surveyed the screens. Her eyes returned to him as he began speaking. She rather liked the purring tone to his voice, although something about it did unsettle her rather deep down. She couldn't quite put her finger on what about it bothered her, but it wasn't troublesome enough to cause her to search out a name for it.

Her pleasant expression darkened a little when Mar nearly misspoke, and she wondered what he had been about to say. "Your voice," she echoed, frowning still. "I can understand that, I suppose. But it's not so off-putting that I wouldn't want to speak with you. You're far more interesting than nearly anyone I've ever met." Her expression lightened into its usual smile.

((It actually makes a crazy kind of sense that Mar would have very little control over his emotions in a mortal body. Mortals live far more in the moment than Mar naturally would. He wouldn't be used to their strength at all. That and he's crazy-flamboyant anyway. :P And he's had little reason to blur the truth in the Bar. Would be fun to experiment to see if certain aspects of him are working or not though. Yaaay, waiting for Terenia's post. x3 ))

Mar looks a little worried when Elayne's expression changes. The rather bright color of his eyes seems to dim momentarily and his right hand nudges at the edges of his cravat. He's since gotten his appearance back together from when he accidentally blew a hole in his own body, although his shirt is still bloodstained underneath his jacket. "I..." I just want you to be safe, pet. I meet people like you so infrequently....

Mar then gratefully notes Elayne's attempt to change the subject before he becomes lost in thought. He smiles warmly and states, "Careful now, sweetie. Interesting people tend to lead almost painfully interesting lives. ....though this isn't always the case. No one tells you that being absolute ruler of anything requires you to sign paperwork more than it produces pleasure."

Elayne watched Mar's eyes seem to lose some amount of brightness, and he shuffled a little, seeming uncertain. She wondered what was wrong; she had, after all, just confirmed that she was interested in him. Perhaps she was missing something.

After he spoke, she laughed and nodded. "So I've heard. So even someone like you has to deal with all that crap, huh?" She put on a thoughtful expression tinged with a smirk. "I wonder: so the greater the power, the greater the bureaucratic nightmare? I can't imagine what you have to put up with, if so. Makes me glad for my pretty worthless state," she winked.

Lucan smiled and replied “The design is inspired by the Koltan, a predatory bird on my home planet. They are gentle towards Relnians and are sometimes kept as pets. I actually have one that I keep in my personal quarters.”

At that moment Lucan stood up walked to the door. He looked at Genie and asked, “Would you like to see it?”

<We're not leaving,> Terenia says abruptly, unable to keep her misery from showing on her face, <in fact, it appears that we are going to have company rather soon. Sub-Visser Seventeen, the Yeerk that inhabits my sister, is evidently planning on retrieving me himself.>

She scowls, obviously unhappy with the idea of someone retrieving her like a child, and even less happy with who it is.

<He said he had a job for me, but would not clarify. I'm sure it has to do with Myitt and Ossanlin's plan. I have no idea how he plans to get here and back to Earth by tomorrow morning, though.>

She shrugs, looking torn, <I don't know what I'll do if the others free Tammy and I'm not around.>

Belzar wandered around a bit and found the ship graveyard. All the brokendown machinery gave him an uneasy feeling, but he felt he might find something useful to him. His shield generator wasn't responding at all, and he wasn't sure how well he'd do in a fight even if he did get patched up. for a soldier drone the inability to fight is very serious business.

Keshin frowns irritably, kicking at the dirt and throwing his hands up in the air. "Oh, great. So now because the big shot Imperial is probably threatening your sister or something you have to go with him or her ass'll be in the fire. Which means that everything we've done up until this point has been an incredible waste of our time. Then again, what was I expecting considering the amount of **** everyone seems to run into in this Bar?"

Keshin swears in Yeerkish under his breath for a few moments and then sighs, looking somewhat calmer. "I guess it doesn't really matter. Some of our jobs never really pan out anyway, or we end up getting shot at instead. That's just the price you have to pay for doing nothing legitimately. But..." Keshin scratches his head. "...if the others free your sister, your problem's solved. You can start a new life in some remote place and really do something with it, free of the nightmares of your past. Joanne could tell you something about that, though her case isn't as bad as yours."
*****************************************************************************************************

Mar smirks at Elayne's wink, a knowing expression on his face. "Oh, you have no idea. It works like this. Since propaganda has already established you as this invincible protector, this is what everyone around you expects you to be. And this includes your own men. The assumption is that because you will take the beating and will pick up their slack, they don't have to try very hard. Now..." Mar smirks nastily. "...this tends to...backfire when the person's overestimated their worth to me. But the result is pretty much the same. I end up doing nearly everything, and what I'm not doing someone else will screw up." Mar then rolls his eyes.

"What makes it worse is...because practically all major laws passed in a place need my approval first, they all go through my office," mutters Mar. "So I end up swamped by paperwork when I'm not correcting a blunder that wouldn't have happened if anyone actually paid attention to what I said. Conquering is a joy. Ruling is not. Anyone can tell you that. And one other thing..." Mar glances at Elayne and smiles. "...you're not worthless. And don't let anyone say that about you. I wouldn't let them say it. A kind heart is worthless when you lead and in battle...but not among friends, dear. You loved your father and fought for him, though you did let the emotion rule you to your detriment. And..." Mar glances at the robot wandering around. "...you seem to be an excellent mechanic."

She blushed a little at his compliments and shook her head at her own foolishness. I thought I was done with blushing over this guy, she chided herself.

"I guess my skills as a mechanic are useful enough, but only since I live in a technology-dependent society. And even then... well, you said it yourself, Mar: if fixing up a robot like him brings me any benefits, they're totally negligible. Besides, it's not an uncommon trade--although not all mechanics have my charming personality," she teased with a self-deprecating eye roll.

Still, she was glad his eyes were bright again, and that he was smiling. When he looked like that--and when he was saying such nice things--it was hard for her to imagine why anyone wouldn't like him. For all she enjoyed talking with Myitt, she couldn't understand her resistance to Mar.

Before she let herself get too jealous of her new friend, she returned to the topic at hand. "But considering all the **** you have to deal with, it's probably a good thing. I don't mind having fewer responsibilities like those."

Mar grins. "I don't think you'd have liked being a rebel leader much, honestly. They're the ones who have to stay strong when their entire group is either failing to produce change or they're under the pressure of being caught. Though I applaud your tenacity and strong belief in the rights of people like your father...perhaps the reason you backed down was because you were not meant to...lead." Mar's voice takes that odd purring turn as he says this for some indiscernable reason. "Perhaps when you return home you will find someone else to help you organize your rebellion again and fight for change."

Mar is definitely relaxing now. His body seems to be far less tense than it was and he's almost leaning against the back of the seat sideways. He knows perfectly well that Elayne is pleased by his compliments and his mind is pulling itself back together. Lovely woman, really. She's far too hard on herself. She would make...an excellent addition...but...I don't think that I want that from her. This body's wants and feelings are starting to override my own, and I have not been concentrating...and regardless I do not want her to suffer. Sweet Elayne must not feel me at the edges of her mind, as Precious does at points. She wouldn't like me anymore. ....so what to do? Mmm, does it really matter? I am enjoying this quite a bit.

Elayne's eyes lowered as he spoke. It was true that she had always considered herself a leader out of necessity; her cause was unpopular enough that hardly anyone was willing to fight with her, much less take charge of the movement. But still, it was never pleasant to have someone suggest she was not particularly good at--or meant to do--what she did.

When his voice gained that low rumbling quality again, she looked back at him. He didn't appear to be judging her; in fact, he looked as pleased and relaxed as she had ever seen him... maybe even more so. "Perhaps so," she echoed, thinking on his words. It's really only pride keeping me from wanting that, she thought. I wouldn't mind taking a backseat in the movement... keeping the ideology firm, but from behind the scenes. She slowly smiled. "That's not a bad idea, Mar. You know, you seem to understand me pretty well for having just met me."

"Sure." Genie unbuckled herself and stood, following Lucan. "Maybe you can give me a general tour, too?"
