<You say that now, but when it actually comes down to it? I don't think so. I care about you Corliss, and I think you care about me too, but that doesn't mean I think you'll actually sacrifice your own well being for me.>

<I find it hard to have hope,> Terenia says flatly, <when every time I hope for something I end up worse off than before.>

"Then you 'aven't had enough hope that's worth believing in," Corliss says scathingly.  "Try it sometime.  I sacrifice my own well-being every time I step out of me 'ome."

<Yes, I haven't had much to hope for,> Terenia responds sarcastically. <Certainly not that my family would stay in one piece or that I would be able to play a productive part in this dapsen war or that I would ever be able to go home again. And definitely not that I would be able to save the lives of the people I care about most. None of that was worth believing in.>

Ossanlin trots down the ramp and out of the ship without further ado, not listening in on Corliss' conversation.  <I hope that you enjoy your newfound freedom Efaen.  A price has been paid.>

Ossanlin sighs as he trots toward the bar, turning the trot into a gallop.  The wind felt good against his skin...refreshing, crisp, clean.  Sensations that Terenia might not feel again.  No...he would try to acquire her human form from Efaen once he had some of his strength back.  And then he would look into possibilities for fabricating a body...it might be possible...maybe.

Ossanlin slows as he nears the bar and then pushes through the old-style swinging doors, looking around a bit before making his way up to the bar.  <Iqvana please....quickly.>  The BT looks at him with somewhat widened eyes before shrugging and filling a small tumbler with clear liquid...

"And you know what I've been through," Corliss says plainly.  "You know what I've lost.  I joined my cause because I was tired of serving a cause I was tired of believing in.  And I trust this cause. I trust Myitt and Reven and...and those I've felt...something I haven't felt in all my long years in the service of the Empire.  True trust.  More than affection..." He swallows again.  "I never knew what to call it, until I became...until I found Michael.  I finally have a word for what I've felt my whole life.  And I am not ashamed to give it a name.  Now, will you understand that I am trying to help you?  Because I..."  He sucks in a breath, as nervous as any human teenager.  "Because I love you."

Salem raised his eyebrows at Vlad's assertion that something might happen. It was true- there was something about this scene that made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. The ship had plowed through the trees to his left, leaving them cracked and broken. It was actually parked on top of one of the larger trees in the area, having broken it in two on the way down. This had obviously been a less-than-smooth landing. From where he was, though, it looked almost entirely undamaged. That pointed to either a very lucky landing or a very skilled pilot. Normally, an Andalite ship's hull would have been shredded by repeated impacts like that.

He nodded to Vlad, then proceeded to begin circling the downed ship, slowly riding the bike around at a wide distance. The hatch was shut, and there were no signs of activity. Something wasn't right here. Salem frowned and squinted at the ship.

This time the silence emanating from the Yeerk Pool is clearly one of shock, not anger or sorrow. It takes Terenia a long time to get her bearings enough to speak coherently.

<You what?> she asks, aghast. <Why would you say that? Why? You know what happens to people who lo- who feel that way. Who I feel that way about. I can't - I just -> she is unable to finish, her thoughts stumbling over one another as she tries to adequately express the terrifying connotation that comes along with that one word she refuses to say.

"Because I believe it," Corliss says firmly.  "I don't care what the risks are.  I've never been so certain of anything in my long life.  If you don't accept...I understand.  But if you do, I..."  He sucks in a breath.  "I would be happy to accept in return."

<Christ, is this the way Yeerk dates get on?> Mike asks.  <No wonder you blokes are so awkward.  'Please enjoy me bloody company, I'd be 'appy to melt with you and die.'  Christ almighty!>

<Accept what?> Terenia demands. <The fact that you're putting me in an impossible position? I care about you Corliss, but I won't watch you die because of me! Did you not see what happened to my sister just yesterday? Don't you understand that that is what happens to the people I am attached to? Are you suicidal or something, because really, I don't think you need any help in this place!>

She stops babbling, forcing herself to be quiet while she calms her racing mind. <It's bad enough that I'm stuck like this, but I can't see you get hurt. I can't go through that again, I just can't.>

Corliss collects his thoughts, then answers.  "I've accepted that my way of life could very well get me killed, let alone hurt," he replies.  "And I don't care.  Mike and I agree...we've been in very many terrible situations, but we don't care whether you're dangerous to us or not.  Perhaps...perhaps it is bold of us, but I believe my host and I are in agreement that we might be beneficial for each other."  Corliss sighs again.  "I, for one, am certainly willing to entertain the idea.  If I am suicidal, then so be it."  He looks down at the ground.  "I don't care."

Fiona chooses not to respond for a moment, and instead stares into her drink. After a moment she says, "Whatever, your life," though somehow with less of her usual tone. She takes a long drink. "To each her own." She sets her glass down. "I need to get the hell out of here," she says to no one in particular, but she doesn't move, and mutters something under her breath about getting too old for this.

Vlad sniffed the air carefully, then he went to catch up with Salem.

Derrel looked Illim, or at least his "host", up and down. Like maybe he'd be able to see Illim himself. "What, are you like, in that guy's head? How do you get in there? I may not be educated, but I don't think heads work like you see in those Loony Toon cartoons. I don't think you can just crawl in one ear and out the other without drilling holes through a few things."

<There is Prince Ossanlin now.> Claxter said, and walked over with the hyperstore gun. <Prince Ossanlin, there has been a further development. A ship came by with drones that wanted to assimilate people, and one of them was part Andalite. This item can store anything inside to later be taken out, and the Andalite cyborg is inside. I wish to help him, but I wanted to speak with you before trying to get him out again.> Saying it out loud, he felt he sounded strange. Imprisoning people in a handheld device seemed strange to him, at least.

"I'll watch over Amy. You just feed, and know you are safe here as well." Temrash said.

"We emit a painkiller when we enter our a host's ear. Fortunately, we don't cause any permanent damage. I mean, their body becomes ours, too. Their pain becomes ours. For that, at least, we try to keep our hosts safe." Illim shifts his weight and continues, "We attach ourselves to our hosts' brains and, from there, can control their bodies. You can imagine some Yeerks, including the government, don't hold much regard for their hosts' freedom, so this lead to the development of different factions of us. A group I used to work for was trying to stop peaceably the takeover of other species, or at least change Yeerks' mindsets about what a relationship between one of us and a host should be."

Derrel made a kind of disgusted face, but was also morbidly curious. "Used to? So you left? Are you going to start a new group with a different set of rules? Are you guys unsatisfied with what you have on your world, or did the invasion start with you sneaking into people's heads when they were asleep after first coming to your planet?"
