<W-what...what in HELL just happened!?> I hissed in pain and surprise.
Alistair was lying on the ground, out cold.
I started to demorph, healing my injuries.
By the time I was human, Alistair was starting to revive.
I jogged back to the entrance of the cave, digging at the brush around the edge.
Rope. Perfect.
"Come on, guys. We don't have all day!"
I grabbed Alistair around the ribs and started to haul him over to the nearest tree.
"Edward, we know you're a Controller. Why the change of heart, eh?"
I started wrapping the rope into a strong, binding knot. Just as Alistair started to open his eyes, I looped the free end of the rope around his neck, pushing one of my feet against the tree for leverage.
"Ais...*gasp*...Yeerk! Let me go! You're...*gasp*...killing me!"
I let up slack instantly.
"What are you talking about? You're the Yeerk!"
"No, I've been using the tunnels to sneak into the Yeerk Pool Complex. I've been passing for a Controller to sneak people out to freedom."
"Then why did you try to kill me? Yeerk liar!"
"I thought YOU were the Yeerk! You knew who Edward was! If an actual Yeerk knew that there were other ways into the Pool Complex, I wouldn't be able to USE the tunnels. They'd be sealed off, or they'd be used to expand the complex."
"That STILL doesn't explain why you tried to kill me!"
"You always told me that you'd rather be dead than a slave."
"...Oh...yeah, I did, didn't I?...uh...thanks, I guess."
"Well, I know I'M not a Yeerk, and you CLAIM that you're not a Yeerk, but how does any of us know that the other three aren't Controllers?"
"That's easy."
"You've got to be kidding me, Ais. Three days? You KNOW what Mom would say! She'd kill us!"
"That's what a Yeerk would say, to get out of staying away from the pool for three days."
"It's also what I would say, because it's TRUE."
"We're still going to stay RIGHT HERE, until I can be sure of you and Edward. Leah, I know I can trust."
"Yeah, but I DON'T know that I can trust her. Or you."
"Which is why we are all going to stay right here."
"I hate it when you get logical on me."
"I hate it when my twin brother is under the control of an alien slug."
"Point taken. Are you going to untie me?"
"No. One less person with their hands free, one less collateral problem."
"Awa' an' bile yer heid, my stubborn sister!"
"Afanc take ye' for a Welshman, my scoundrel brother!"
"Fine!"
"Fine!"
"Good!"
"Good!"
Someone cleared their throat, nearby.
Ali and I looked up at the same time. We had both fallen back on our 'native' accents.
"Well, Ais, now don't ye' feel incredibly foolish? Ye've caused a scene."
"Have ye'ever known me to hesitate to cause a scene?"
"Point taken. I still expect ye' to untie me."
"Yah? Well, I still expect a slug to crawl outta' yer ear, so it's best for all of us if ye' just give up on THAT idea. Also, if I see ye' morphing, I'll clock you again with the mag-lite. Y'hear me?"
"I hear ye'. I don' like it, but I hear ye'."
"Good."
