Morphing Questions...
« on: October 17, 2009, 03:42:20 PM »
Somewhere in like Book 10 or so, Ax mentions that when they morph into smaller morphs, excess mass gets put into zero-space due to conservation of mass/energy.

So, what happens when they morph into something bigger? Where do they get the extra mass from?

Love this site, especially the e-books.

Very good question, and one I believe has come up before. Many have theorised that when morphing a larger creature, the extra mass is drawn from Zero Space itself. However, since the Andalites are several centuries ahead of us in technology and we have no real understanding of what exactly Z-space is and how it works, it's impossible to say for sure.

Yeah, I figure it comes from z space. How the extra mass gets there is the big question. Maybe energy from Z space is converted into mass somehow.

Z-space is said to be the opposite of normal space, which contains nothing but vacuum. Therefore, it's possible that Z-space itself is made up of potential mass?

I was under the impercession that z-space is nothingness
The creation of matter a huge hole in morph theory, but (or because of that) it's never addressed in the series.
Very annoying imo

Give KA some credit, you'd have to have a degree in advanced astrophysics to even begin to explain half the things in the series. The fact that she even brought up where the morpher's mass is stored is impressive. Also, it is fictional for a reason, lol.

I have a theory, actually.  This is a question to which I've given a lot of thought, and I think I finally have something.

Okay.  Prepare yourselves for a science lecture that would do Ax proud.  Here goes.

According to quantum physics, empty space is not actually empty.  In any vaccuum, you will often get random matter particles which pop out of nowhere, accompanied, of course, by an equal number of anti-matter particles.  This phenomenon isn't actually creating matter out of nothing, since the anti-matter basically acts as 'negative matter'.  These particles never exist for very long, of course, since the anti-matter and the matter will promptly collide into one another and then cease to exist.  Which is why you never see random matter flicker into existance in the real world.  But, the important point here is, that you can actually get matter out of nothing, so long as you keep the matter and anti-matter separate.

So maybe, just as when you morph something small a blob of matter gets extruded into z-space, so when you morph something large, a blob of anti-matter gets extruded into z-space.  As long as the anti-matter blob is kept separate from you during the morph, you can get matter out of 'nothing.'  And then, when you demorph, the anti-matter merges back with your body, and the extra matter is lost.

This should theoretically work, since Z-space is big and empty, therefore the anti-matter blob has no matter to collide with and annihilate itself.

Heh, I am such a nerd.

yeah I always thought it was kind of annoying that she put so much thought and detail into where extra mass goes when you morph something small but never even thought to address where extra mass comes from when you morph something big.

I always assumed the Andalites just plopped a big hunk of mass in Zero-Space in order for everyone to draw from. But whether that mass needs to be specialized and organic or not, considering how the mass in Zero Space is portrayed in #18...

idk I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how morphing/Zero-Space works and it really just confuses the hell out of me.
I go off topic on purpose.

I always figured that the Andalites just stuck a bunch of matter in Z-space to use in case that ever happened.

Wouldn't the anti-matter cause a massive explosion when it touched my body an annialated my matter?

What if an Andalite ship hit the extruded anti-matter?
