Title: How and when did you hear about and start reading and/or watching Animorphs?

Just curious. You see, some ppl learn though the tv show, or the books. I, for one, right now am only 13, so that would make me 3-4 when Animorphs was first known. My teacher, now, is about to retire, so you can imagine how many years had passed since she was teaching, so her whole book collection is about Animorphs. I just wondered if there was a tv show based on the books, so I googled it. My teacher doen't have all the books in teh sereies, and i googled some more and, well, here I am watching the whole tv series and I printed out the whole series of the e-books of this site. Waste of paper, but still worth the trouble. ;D

In 6th grade, it was Silent Sustained Reading in my English Class. I looked around my classrooms library. <Reference, biologies, autobios, preppy fiction, stupid, boring.> Then a book crosses my eye that intrigues me. <Is that a kid turning into a lizard?>

I pick up a cool-looking book titled "Animorphs". I open to the first page being an illustration of a lizard in a school locker. <Now this looks cool.>

I read the first couple paragraphs, and instantly fell in love with it. The Friday we went to Chico, CA to go to the movies, we finish our dinner with time to kill before going to the movie. So we go to a Barnes & Noble. I immediately go to the Sci fi section and look for Animorphs. Not there, okay, just fiction, not there. I ask an attendant, they tell me it's in the kids section. I don't care if I am eleven, I'm going into that kiddie secion, and finding this book.

I scan the shelves, and right next Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, I see Animorphs. At the time there were only three published, I buy the first two, 'cause that's all I could afford.

From then on, I bought every single book that was released on the month they were released, save 5 books, when I either couldn't find it, they sold out, or we just didn't go to Chico that month.

Printing out the e-books of Animorphs is definitely NOT a waste of paper.

My sister bought some when I was in the first grade and I eventually started reading them.

When I was younger I thought "OMG ANIMALS R COOL AND MARCO IZ FUNNI" but I got really into the series in middle school when I started re-reading it. I had bought all of the books by that point.

5th grade. The teacher had some books on her bookshelf. Later I read all the books I could out of the school library. Elementary and middle school had a decent selection, high school did not (I suppose the high school library dedicated more time to "academic" books)

I was still big into reading, and we came across a small bookstore I had never been in before. I checked out a few books, and one of them was book 8. I read it, liked it, and the nexyt time I was in I started looking for more. It was some summer around the time book 15 came out.

all the books? I thought it would be bigger than that.

sometime in 7th grade (only a few years ago), my brother brought home a book from his school library. It was 8. I read it and absolutely loved it. And when he returned it, I begged him "can you get me that book back?" so many times, but he couldn't, and I was horrified. Then we went to public library and then started my journey of many library trips to read the entire series, all in a year.

couple of months ago. I know, I know. but the bus was gonna be there in 15 minutes, so I had some time to kill. I went to the school library (my motto is: when in doubt go to the library) and I saw a book. The True Story of Lilli Stubeck. We'd read an extract in class, so I was like, hey cool. I was about to get it, when I saw the book in the shelf below it. Animorphs. I picked up the first book and read the inside cover. Huh, I thought. That sounds a bit like Shapeshifter series. So I borrowed it. And here I am :D

I got 4 books for birthday #10, 12, 13 and 16
Then I began to read number 10... and Marco really annoyed me so I decided after only a few chapters that I didn't like the books.
Some years later I decided I would read all of those books anyway so I finished number 10 which didn't tell me anything (all the information I needed to understand anything were in the chapters that I had read some years before. When I had finished it I decided to start with the next one to have in done... and I immediately fell in love with Rachel, Tobias and Jake. I even fell in love with Marco so I reread number 10. The next book I bought after that was a Marco book... (I wanted a Cassie book since I didn't have anyone but there were no Cassie books in the store that day and I live about 100km away from the city and can't go there every day - next time I tried to find a Cassie book I found the only Ax book translated into Swedish, I didn't know Ax had narrated a book and in curiousity, I picked the Ax book instead - and then I read on Wikipedia that Jake had been a controller so the Cassie book had to wait again - and if that wasn't bad enough, they didn't had #6 that time so I picked #11 instead)
So that is what came out of a book that I didn't like and that it took me some years to read... How did that happen?

I remember just browsing around in elementary school library just looking for anything that caught my eye.  The Animorphs covers looked cool so I think I just read the books with cool animals on the cover.  I also remember never reading the Cassie and Rachel books because at that age girls were gross.  It wasn't until just this year that I decided to read the series from 1-54.

I first saw the books back in 2001...for some odd reason the college bookstore had a few kids' books in one section. There were mostly textbooks and then this one section with some general reading and some kids' stuff. I almost bought The Message once because of the dolphin on the cover but ultimately didn't. At the time I had heard of the TV series somewhere and thought the books were tie-ins with the series the way Nickelodeon does with a lot of its current shows.

When I started working in the library, I occasionally put away some of the books and would see them when I shelved other books, and when I finally read the back of book one, I had to check out the first one. It was partly the fact I'm a huge animal lover and partly the fact that the invasion stuff was reminiscent to a point to some of the plot points of Tracker,a sci-fi show I still adore even though it only lasted a season in 2001--2 and had a teeny fan base. I could read up to the mid-20s between this library and the one closer to here where my card is actually from, and then I had to request via interlibrary loan because they apparently quit buying the books after that point. It's good that this area is networked with many other libraries in the area.

I got some of my own when they were weeded, and it eventually got to where the youth servicies girl put them aside for me automatically lol. Although by then I found a jackpot at a local used bookstore so I was able to send those copies to another fan.

I hate that the second half of the series is harder to find. And now the used bookstore closed, darnit. The lady at Bargain Books told me to keep calling to see if they had any every so often though. I'd order from ABE.com or Ebay but it's kinda hard to do so right now. I do watch the library donations and thrift shops and rummage sales though. Got a few that way.

I watched a few eps of the series on library VHS and more on YouTube, but I haven't finished yet.

anyway when i was about 8 i was at camp and one of my friends was reading "the forgotten" and i asked him what it was. He explained what the book was about, and i thought it was cool, so i borrowed the book and loved it

I was 12 or 13.. Saw the first two in the school library, thought it looked cool and here I am! I quit around book 30, you know, life. I was drawn back by some friends to come to this board(10 years after I got into them), and decided I had to finish the series. Spent 100 bucks on eBay for every book and reread every book (except alternamorphs because I don't like those) within 2 weeks. I'm a stronger fan than before.

i was 10? The fifth grade...omg that's going on 12 yrs ago now...wow...
anyways, they had this thing where u have to read 4-5 books a month and each month had a specific genre attached to it. Sci-Fi/Fantasy month comes along, & I spot the Animorphs series. Thought the cover was cool & started reading. Did a complete 180, went from a Book hating-never want to touch one-TV Addict to TV hating Bookworm. (Well except a small handfull of tv shows).

As for the show, knew bout it, but never got around to actually watching it until back when I found original RAF

3rd or 4th grade - I remember getting book 2 at the second scholastic book sale when they sold animorphs, skipped over book 1 because the the morph on the cover just didn't look as awesome as the other two books (2 and 3).  After I read book two and liked it, then I got book 1.

all i remember is in grade 3 i read #2 and #19 and asking the teacher "why is there <> instead of " "?" and that's all i remeber about it back then. Then in grade 5 i saw those books again and i sorta remember reading them but i avoided those books until i saw one of my friends reading them so i started reading them again and stuff

and i really don't know when i found out about the show, most likely when i was searching up "animorphs" on google like, uh, 2 years ago...?

In the 7th grade, had been seeing them in the scholastic flyer for a few months, but couldn't afford both it and goosebumps. One day I found book 2 in my school library. I never went back to Goosebumps afterwards, lol.

My teacher doen't have all the books in the sereies,

If your school was near me, and your teacher could promise me the books would never be damaged or leave the classroom, I would gladly give the entire animorphs collection to her class.
To answer your question, I was about the same age as you. Thirteen or fourteen, when I was in the town's library and saw books 1 through 4 on display in the children's section.

It wasn't until someone had given me the gist of the series that I borrowed book four first. That's right, the Messenger was the first book I had ever read of Animorphs. From that moment on, I was hooked.

I was probably 13 (so 10 years ago) and rumaging around in my aunt's loft to look for something to read. Of all the books in all the lands, she had an Animorphs issue, 15 to be specific. After that, the rest is history. I can't really remember my initial reaction to it at all, but something must have stuck because I got most of the collection after that.

I had just finished reading Plague by Michael Grant. I thought I would explode because I had to wait until April 2012 for the next one (Fear.) I decided to look up more of his books to read, and found out he had a wife who also wrote books. I saw that one of the characters was named Rachel, and got books 1 and 2 on my kindle. I'm sure you guys can guess what happened next  :)

I was born in November 1990. In 8th grade, I was at a new school and I saw a few Animorphs books in the little library they had. I read the few that they did have, not caring that they were out of order. I also tried reading The Ellimist Chronicles then, but it didn't hold my attention then. I'd like to read it for real now that I'm older, but I haven't yet.

...

Okay, actually, my story is a bit more complicated than that, but I honestly can't remember the finite details of how I first heard about Animorphs. :(

I thought Ellimist Chronicles was pretty disappointing tbh, and it doesn't really answer any questions important for understanding the series.

But if you're one of those types that needs to read everything, go for it.

Oh geez... Back in the 6th grade, I think. I saw the first three books at a school's book fair and what really drew me in was #2 : The Visitor. Just seeing Rachel turning into a cat sold me. So I bought #1 and #2 and a few days later I bought #3. Been a fan since. So around '96 or '97. I'm 27 now and still collecting. :D

That's craziness. I had almost the same intro.

In 6th grade English we had Recreational Reading. I was going through the line of books in our little bookshelf and all of a sudden there was a book with a guy turning into a lizard! I immediately grabbed that book and was immediately hooked. I even kept that book (still have it too). I think at the time only the first 3 or 4 were even released, so I was at Barnes & Noble every single month clammering for the newest book.

I currently have every book save four or five titles. I should look into craigslist or eBay  to get the others I need.

I learned about it from what I remember was my last year in Middle School.I was looking around to find some other books to get, because I had checked out a wrestling one for three times in a row and they said I needed to wait about two weeks before I could check it out again,so I was bored trying to find something different and I looked all over for something new.

So I went to the back if the library and was looking and on the bottom shelf was a WHOLE row filled with Animorphs books. So I figured this would be a cool little series to try,so I got the first five checked out, read them in class,at home,on the bus anywhere I could and I got hooked and it made me into a big fan and a fan of role playing Tobias and such.

Oddly, that same day I found Animorphs,I was looking through another book and saw a picture of a Centaur for the first time and I was in awe at it.Who knew I'd travel down the weird road of growing up as a fan of Animorphs and Centaurs...?

Mostly I just lurk but I really want to reply to this topic so.

I started reading the books in 5th grade. I saw the first one in an issue of the Scholastic Magazine (an advertisement right when it came out), thought it looked awesome, and bought it when the book fair came to town. After I went to middle school there was no more book fair, so I went to Walden Books (does that even exist any more??) every time a new book came out. I have a bunch of the freebies you used to get with the books at home somewhere. I never game up on the series, I bought every book as soon as it came out and I finished the series when it ended about 5 years after it came out. It was a huge part of my life growing up.

I never watched the TV series when it aired on Nickelodeon because we didn't have cable, but someone sent me copies of all the episodes about 6 years back, so I have seen it. It was okay. Not as bad as everyone says I don't think, but I prefer my versions of the characters.

Now for the first time I am re-reading the entire series (in celebration of the new release, I am buying those books as they come out too in hopes that it will help do something more for the fandom) for the first time since it ended over 10 years ago. I have 10 more books left to go!

It was the summer of 1996, so I was 11 and out shopping with my mom. I was wandering around Media Play (kinda like a Best Buy) when I found the book section. I've always been a voracious reader, so when I saw  these cool book covers, I begged my mom to get me all 3 that were out. The rest, as they say, is history. Animorphs remained a part of my life through middle school and high school, until it ended when I was in college. It isn't hyperbole to say these books changed my life!

Guys... I was at the Scholastic store in NYC not to long ago, and I walked up to one of the employees asking where the republished editions were. I spotted them before she could even answer and she just says "well that was easy" as i walk towards them. I reply with "No, you do not understand! The mother-effin books changed my life as a kid when they were first published!!" And we go into this whole rant like conversation about cult 90s book series before she's pulled away by other costumers... Nerd life moment success.

My local library had a few worn paperbacks of the series...the first one I read was book 2 because book 1 was already checked out by someone else and I just thought it looked so cool...this pretty girl turning into a cat    :kitty:
My family wasn't the type that would spend money on books so I read about 20 out-of-order books that my library had and kept wondering how it ended. Kids at school kept bragging like, ohh I finished that series it ends like bla bla bla but everyone said something different  ;D
Now I'm rereading the series as an adult thanks to a lovely website I found with completely organized pdfs. My infinite gratitude for all the effort! :-*

Ooo speaking of libraries... I also recently went back to the one I grew up with, and just because I could I started trolling the kid's section. You have no idea how much pride and excitement there was in my brain when I saw well used first editions AND second editions. I actually laughed when I saw this juice stain in #4 of the 2nd because I was one of those kids that sat in the corner in lunch and recess with my nose in them. Then there's the librarian who I thought retired or w/e that recognized me and went on to this other patron about Animoprhs because not only did she know I was a huge fan, but because I donated all my animorphs books in my late teens. Apparently there's such a high demand for them that they keep ordering them and still they seem to disappear like air.
You have no idea how awesome that is to me.

I first saw them turn up in those Scholastic book fair things. I started reading them after the TV show aired (it was 1998, I was 10, and it was on Nickolodean. If it came on before bed time, I watched it. XD) So... started watching in September 1998, started reading in October 1998.

Saw them in middle school one day in the early 2000's and I thought "Hey these look cool" so I got hooked to them right off the bat.

The TV show is a different story, I never even knew there was one when I was bored reading about the books I saw there was a TV show, next week found the first VHS, got it and now have all four and seen all the episodes online but the last three in Season 2.

I first found them when I was in fourth grade. I was working in the library (I loved to do that) and came across book #4, the Message. Being the little girl that I was, I saw that a girl was turning into a dolphin and flipped. Checked out the book, looked for the rest of the series, and bada-bing, bada-boom. Here I am. Jjust finishe the series a few weeks ago. :)

Spring/summer of 2010:
I was 14. My brother had just found this awesome book series that he wanted me to read. So I did. I read it in order, of course.

Needless to say, I got really hooked. Ended up getting ahead of him in the series, reading while I didn't have computer access. And the last regular book was read while I was tired and in bed, so of course I sobbed and myself to sleep when I found out what happened in the end..

Well....I heard for the first time in May 1998. I was 11 and a fan of Goosebumps. The publishing house distributed a booklet that advertised this new series with aliens and boys who become animals, with the covers and titles of the first four books. My cousin was enthusiastic  and convincend me to read them, but I was skeptical. Then he stopped with book #6. I had read until book 5, but I forgot quickly about it, I continued to prefer Goosebumps. A few months later, by pure chance I found those five books in my bookshelf, I reread and it was the beginning of a passion, which, almost 15 years later, is not yet finished  ;D

Why are these old threads getting necromancied. Anyone got a turn undead spell?

By the way, I got into the books at about book 15. They were in a bookstore I hadn't been in before. I saw book 8's cover and thought this guy was turning into an alien/monster. I started watching the show as soon as it came out. I was unimpressed with the show.

My sister was into it, we had a small library with a lot of the books a few blocks from our house, so on weekends and sometimes after school we'd go down there and read 'em. I was like 6 or 7 at the time, so this was around '97 to 2000 I was reading them. I never got further than the David arc at the time (it just got WAY too dark for me), save a few random books I read out of order (#28, I remember). I never watched the TV show (as bad as everyone knew it was at the time, I probably would have, if I actually had cable.) Picked them up again a couple years ago when I realized the series is where I got my phobia of sharks. XD

I was 7 at the time, so that meant the book had been out for close to a year. I was in the school library looking for something to read for a book report when one of the older kids threw the first book down on the nearby table and walked away. I grabbed it thinking the cover looked interesting, read the first couple pages and never looked back.

I actually remember watching it on Nick and thinking it was cool how they became animals. Then I decided to check out the books and found that the books were better.

I remember my mom buying the first 5 books for me when I was about maybe 10 years old.  I was into animals and aliens at the time, so my mom was so confident I'd love the series that she bought all 5 of them for me at the same time.

This must have been sometime between the release of the 5th and 6th books, because I remember the 6th one coming out and being really excited about it.  I believe I devoured the first 5 books within the span of a few days then went through major withdrawals upon realizing that from here on out I'd have to wait a month or two before getting to read another one.

Sadly, I kinda lost interest in the books in the early 30s, I think #32 or #33 might have been the last one I read upon first release.  I think by that time I had "outgrown" them.  A few years back I experienced a renewed interest in the series and decided to buy every single book in the series that I didn't already have and read them all.

I remember being at the bookstore, to pick up the newest Baby-Sitter's Club book, and saw a book series I had never seen before.  At this point, I think only the first 3 books were out.  I picked up the first two and my dad bought them for me.  Unfortunately, I lost interest around book #20 or so, but a couple of years ago, my dad bought me the entire series on eBay.  I devoured them in a week or so.

I bought books 1 and 6 when I was really young because I liked the look of the covers, but it took me years to finally read them. I was hooked! Still think they're good books now.

I think I was in grade.....4? when I first discovered the Animorphs series.
My mom had to get something at the book store and I went along hoping to find a new Goosebumps book. The store didn't have any Goosebumps, but I did see a book with a girl transforming into a grizzly bear on the cover and was instantly interested. I came home with The Invasion and The Stranger. I remember sitting in my room all evening reading for longer then I had ever read in my life. Ijust couldn't put The Invasion down.

My grandmother gave me the second book in the series as a gift when I visited her. (I was about 7 or 8) I was hooked. A girl with my name AND a cat (my fave animal at the time)? Hooked. ;)
