references to the 90s
« on: March 16, 2013, 04:18:15 AM »
Ever since I began rereading the Animorphs series, seeing all of the references to the 90s have made it even more enjoyable for me because it just reminds me of my childhood...
I don't know if a this topic has been posted before but here are some of the 90s references that I've caught since rereading the books:
- Sony Walkman
- Doom
- Baywatch
- South Park
- Circuit City
- 56k dialup internet
- floppy disks
- America Online (parodied in book 16)
- Cindy Crawford
- Terminator
- Alien
- Nine Inch Nails
- Megadeth and Spawn :)
- Alanis Morissette
- Jaws
- Jonathon Taylor Thomas and "Live With Regis and Kathy Lee" (parodied in book 12)
- Mmmbop

I know there's more but those are just a few that I noticed. It's just nice to reminisce of times when Facebook and Harlem Shake weren't around.

I think you mean Nice is Neat.

I'm not sure what references are from the 90's, or some other time. It's a very 90's series, though.

The dolphins they acquire in #4 are named after Friends.

The South Park one sticks out for me.  I hadn't heard of South Park the first time I read them.  I read thru again a couple years ago and couldn't stop laughing at it.  And now I agree with Ax on the internet speeds.  Thousands? not even millions, mi-llions, ions.

Don't forget Power Puff Girls.

I remember Shaquille O'Neal, Arnold Schwarzeneger, Lucy Lawless - Xena, young Hansons "boy that look like girls" (today definitely not!) Goosebumps, and many others.

Michael Jordan and Titanic too  :)
I guess they'll be changing that to Lebron James and Twilight in the rerelease?  ::)

I really hope they don't! It would be bleak. There's no reason to "update" a series, would mean altering its nature. "Animorphs" is a 90ies series - and strongly linked to that period.
They were the legendary times of Michael Jordan and Shaq, Hanson, Xena, Friends, Baywatch - no place for LeBron, Ipad, Facebook, Justin Bieber, Twilight etc.

I really hope they don't! [...] no place for [...] Justin Bieber [...]

Sixty years from now, I'd might be more accepting of an update.

But I'll accept Justin Bieber as soon as I accept that obnoxious, moronic Fred character (translation: never).

Oh yes please! Including those... materials... would only kill the series faster. That's one of the reasons I enjoy re-reading the series... just to go back to the amazing 90s :)

Another reference to 90's : X-Files. Remember "Fox Mulder" and "Dana Scully" in #14? :)

I don't understand why they need to update the series. Is there a reason? Kids are not stupid : they are able understand that a book is not set in the present time.

Apparently I'm totally out of the loop, but I thought the re-release was dead?

As for 90's references, "Friends" gets mentioned quite a few times, and seeing as that is my favorite show, I have to love it. Any time a landline is used could be considered a 90's reference as well. :P
Meh.
