<We already act outside of the law,> Serid points out with a respectful nod towards Enorryma. <Surely we have enough creativity to not dismiss the idea so readily. A communique from a rogue group... an unknown source, or perhaps the known name of War Prince Ossanlin... it would carry weight, even if it was immediately denounced by the government. It would raise enough questions to start the conversation.>

He shifts his weight, turning a stalk eye on Keslin, regarding him curiously. His question is a good one, but he does not push for its answer yet.

Illim slides farther back against the dome wall, putting an arm around her shoulders and keeping quiet. He sits, eyes on the strangely colored grass below, until his knees start to stiffen. "Why don't you come check out my quarters with me? We can talk there," he finally speaks up, seeming to know she'll understand the message between the lines: let's talk somewhere private.

Claxter didn't know if Illim hadn't heard him properly, or was ignoring him. <Illim! Tess needs attention more than Terenia right now. I'm going to the bridge to locate Keslin.>

He ran towards the bridge, looking inside for Keslin. Unfortunately he wasn't there. Was he in that meeting Serid had been summoned to? Should he interrupt it? He really didn't know if Tess was currently going into labor, or if it was a false alarm. He decided to try it provately.

<<Keslin, this is Claxter. When you get done with that meeting, you should visit Tess. I believe she needs your support.>>

He started walking back to the done. He wanted to keep an eye on Terenia, as well as Efaen.

Keslin listens in silence, his eyebrows furrowed as he takes in the news. He cannot say that he is particularly surprised to learn about Sector Seven's existence. A group of power-hungry Andalites who used their power with impunity? The only surprising thing to Keslin is that such actions can only be blamed on a single group of Andalites.

He lets the Andalites talk, watching each of them in turn, making note of their contributions to the conversation. When he finally determines that he has something of worth to say, he clears his throat, standing a little straighter at the table, keeping his trembling fingers in his pockets.

"While being pursued is not the ideal situation, nor, I'm sure, was it anticipated, Ossanlin," he says, inclining his head slightly towards the Andalite, "I think the most important thing at this time is to determine our primary goals. For my part, I must say that outing Sector Seven to the Andalite people for their atrocities is not particularly high on my priority list. My brothers and cousins, and their hosts, are dead or stranded, and right now we need to find those that survived while avoiding recapture."

He licks his lips, intending to continue, but Claxter's thought-speak cuts through his mind and he straightens, expression blanching a little.

<<We have to go see if she's okay, Kes,>> Chris whispers urgently.

<<I know,>> Keslin says, distracted. <<I know, we will. Just...this is important.>>

<<More important than Tess?>>

Keslin winces, but doesn't say anything.

Terenia doesn't say anything, but she does nod and pull herself to her feet slowly, waiting for Illim to join her.

Myitt steps up to the table after Keslin speaks, eyeing the others in the room with dark, tired eyes.

"Point is, will this Sector Seven pull strings that end up alerting their operatives to our whereabouts? Or to our rendezvous points? The Bar, other places of refuge?" She looks around at each person again in turn. "We can't afford to have the people responsible for this atrocity looking to pick off the only threat of revenge they have."

<<An Andalite ****in' mafia,>> Tara notes dryly. <<Can't say it's a shock, but that they're behind this...it makes my blood boil.>>

<<Mine, too,>> Myitt murmurs, her attention focused on their surroundings.

<<That's redundant,>> Tara says, without much gusto.

Ossanlin listens to each point in turn before speaking up again.  <Peace.  Sector Seven is a threat, though no longer an immediate one.  The last I knew, their progress on anti-fusion was barely strong enough to put out an Apix 2 Collider cascade.  That doesn't mean that they haven't advanced significantly since then, but I believe it's a safe bet to say that we have some time before they can actually institute it as a fully-functional device.  They didn't get a chance to see us...they don't know who we are...yet.  Sending any type of communication, especially one naming Sector Seven and detailing development of anti-fusion technology would raise suspicions we cannot yet afford.  And let us not forget that the Empire is just as much of a threat as ever.  We have many enemies, there can be no doubting that.>

He pauses and nods to Keslin.  <The plan remains to collect your missing kin.  That should be our first priority.  The fact is, I do not have enough personnel to keep the Tyrennian running.  Oh, she'll fly for a good while yet, but without additional hands and additional minds, critical testing and upkeep will fall by the wayside.  Problems will grow until there are finally too many to fix and something really major happens.  The fact of the matter is...I...we...all need your help, and that of your survivors.  I believe our next priority after retrieving your remaining people would be to find a suitable place for a base of operations, and for the development and construction of a facility that can perform maintenance and overhauls on the Tyrennian.  We don't need a full crew compliment if we can dock every so often and run the necessary diagnostics and maintenance.>  He nods to Enorryma at that...he would have to ask her later whether or not she agreed with his conclusions.

He glances over at Myitt, sensing the anger within her.  Whether it belongs to Tara or Myitt or both he cannot say, but its presence is certain.  <The Corvus Facility was and is a Sector Seven operation.  One of their more-public operations to be sure, but still, their operation.  I assumed they would be involved in the investigation of the raid.  What I didn't foresee was their ability to somehow track our trajectory.  There are no tracking devices aboard the Mirage...they must've been able to determine our Z-Space vector somehow.  Regardless, I believe the Z-Strain Vortex did the trick.  They'll be wanting to get rid of us one way or another, there's no helping that, but it would seem that we're safe from them for now.  I can't guarantee they won't visit the bar.  I'm surprised they haven't already.  My only conclusion is that the bar will not allow them to find it.  It seems to be able to sense intentions, and either allow or deny access.  Sector Seven would commandeer the entire singularity if they found it...  We'll need to face them eventually, but we have to rebuild our strength first...we can't take them on right now...not as we are.>

He pauses for a good long while before closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.  He moves his gaze back to Keshin.  <And now for the answer to your question.  I have a lot of information regarding Sector Seven.  The fact of the matter is...I am technically a member of Sector Seven.  I assure you that my status is nothing more than a name...I have never been a loyal member of the entity.  My heart and mind are my own, and I have never agreed with Sector Seven's ideals.  I pretended to be a loyal member...it was quite a balancing act, but it paid dividends.  The information I've gathered is invaluable.  After they'd established me as the poster-face for the war, I began to work with the Rebellion.>  He nods at Myitt again.  <They didn't realize until too late that they'd never held my loyalty.  The puppeteers had had their strings pulled for once.  They did what they could by way of damage control...concealin g my actions with the Rebellion, often embellishing reports in my favor.  They had given me great opportunities by making me the face of the military.  They couldn't afford to discredit me or dispose of me...I'd become too important as a tool for control and morale.  Needless to say, they supplied no more information to me after the truth of my loyalties was revealed...but I'd already gathered enough to be dangerous.  I'm sure the news of my death stood very well with them.>

He takes another deep breath, falling silent, scanning the room with his main eyes, gauging reactions and waiting for response, whatever those responses might be.

"A double agent, a poster-child for the war, an Andalite War-Prince, and from what I've seen in the Bar many other things besides," states Keshin, an amused smile crossing over his face. "That's one heck of a record you have---doubtless the only loyalty you really have is to your crew and your code of honor. Though I suppose that includes the remaining rebellion members now. And you claim to be so different from us tureleks, Ossanlin. The only difference I see is in how many people you offer your trust to."

"But regardless..." states Keshin, giving Ossanlin a more serious look. "...after we get back on our feet, what is the group's plan anyway? We're a rag-tag bunch of survivors that, frankly, don't even seem like they like each other very much. Even the rebellion members seem to have differing motives."

In for a leaf, in with the trunk, Esarvit thinks to himself. No, Ossanlin isn't threatening exactly--at present--but it's hard to feel comfortable around someone who would seemingly infiltrate any top-secret group just to sell them out. Absent the formal laws and counterbalances, what's to stop him from doing the same thing to the rebellion?

He hears--MyittandTara, was it?--mention a bar, which rings a bell or two. Something he'd heard about all manner of species that skive off duty, flocking to some outlying establishment or another. Well, so much the better for them if the wrong people are vacating their duties, and isn't that a disgusting thought.

<<If you did not begin to work with the rebellion until you'd joined Sector Seven,>> he asks, <<why did you join the Sector to begin with?>> He turns his stalk eyes to Ossanlin slowly, trying to indicate that he's speaking privately instead of lambasting him in public, and expecting a similarly measured response.

Without his knowledge, Serid's own thoughts are not far from Esarvit's. True, Ossanlin has never done anything but help him--and especially when nearly all of the rest of his kin wouldn't--but if this war has taught him anything, it is to use great caution, even when you feel safe.

He clasps his hands in front of himself as he watches, remaining silent for now.

Illim turns to walk with Terenia, seeming satisfied that she is obeying. "I heard him, I heard him, but there's not a damned thing I can do about it," he mutters to himself, most likely referring to Claxter.

There isn't much Tess can do, either. Half-lying down, suspended in the alien bed, Tess's panting is punctuated by hisses of pain every few breaths. Her forehead is sweaty with the effort of trying to still her twisting insides. "Oh god," she breathes. "They can't come now. They--they can't. Not until--" But she is cut off by an involuntary moan.

Claxter walked back to Tess' room. <Hey. I'm sorry I can't really do much, and Chris and Keslin are in a meeting. If there's anything you know about giving birth that perhaps I can help with, I'd like to try. I know I'm the last person you need right now, but I'm the only one around.>

Ossanlin notes Esarvit's question...perhaps the answer is not so obvious after all.  A dangerous cast comes to his eyes as Keshin compares them, though his tone remains calm and collected...perhaps a bit colder than usual.  <Do not presume too much, bounty hunter.  I do not kill for personal gain.>

He pauses before continuing, answering Esarvit's question publicly as others might be asking the same thing.  <You may be wondering why I became a member of Sector Seven at all...it was a matter of choice.  Sector Seven had had their eyes on me all through the Academy, or so they told me.  They watch for any cadets that out-perform Academy standards.  A good friend of mine, and a mentor all through the Academy and beyond had warned me about Sector Seven.  He'd told me that, given my performance and ability to think beyond the propaganda, that they'd make contact with me eventually.  He also told me what would likely happen if I denied their invitation, then covertly hinted that I could feign loyalty while keeping myself above the water, so to speak.>

<They made contact shortly after I was promoted and chosen to Captain the Tyrennian.  Their contact used several figurative veils of secrecy and contacted me in private.  She was very cordial and not unpleasant, but she never asked if I would like to join them, she merely told me where to be and when, and assumed I would attend.  The choice was simple, I would either attend them and join, or I would be "kept safe" as my old mentor put it.  Sector Seven doesn't like people like me to be in a position power unless I belong to them, so to speak.  Had I rejected their invitation, I most likely would've experienced some sort of "accident" that would've kept me from being able to fulfill any role in the military.>  He shakes his head.  <I knew that I could do good...that I could truly fight for the People if I was given the chance.  My career was still young then, and I was too vulnerable to ignore Sector Seven.  What good could I do the People dead by some supposed freak accident?  I could do more good...much more...by pretending to accept Sector Seven and their ways while keeping my mind clear of their filth and power-lust.  That is why I have done what I have done.  It had to be done.  I fight for the People, truly.  Not just the Andalite People, but all the free Peoples of the Galaxy.  What good would crushing the Yeerk Empire do when Sector Seven would see the Andalites themselves become a controlling Empire thereafter?>

Ossanlin pauses, looking down at his desk a moment before looking up again.  <I won't say I've never made mistakes or done wrong, because I have.  But my thoughts, my hearts, have always belonged to the People and to ethical good.  I fight for them, and I ask that you would all do the same.>

He returns his gaze to Keshin again before looking around the room.  <Once we've stabilized our own situation...we fight.  We fight for the good of all the Peoples of the Galaxy.  We make a difference.>  He returns his gaze to Keshin.  <Think of it as a way of making up for everything you've done, Keshin.>  He moves his gaze back to the whole office.  <Think of the good we could accomplish.  We have a powerful tool in the Tyrennian if we can keep it running.  I know you have some brilliant minds...we do too.  Think of all that we could accomplish together!>  He shifts his gaze to Myitt and Keslin.  <Think...what could your engineers come up with given the Tyrennian's resources?  What could our minds develop together?  Perhaps technologies beyond even that of Sector Seven!  If we're able to gather enough resources, we might even be able to turn out new ships of our own!  We could begin recruiting procedures again from the Empire...perhaps even the Andalites, given the right circumstances.>

Ossanlin pauses a moment, giving the thoughts some time to float around, before coming back down to reality.  <The possibilities are mind-boggling, but only if we can clear this first set of hurtles.  And, of course, you must reform your Council and decide what is best for your own people.  I hope that that decision will involve the Tyrennian, but I would never presume your answer.>  His tone is clear and sincere.  He doesn't know what he'll do if the remaining rebels decide not to associate with the Tyrennian...but the choice is theirs.

He moves his gaze back to Keshin.  <<And I don't suppose you would want to take up with a noble cause unless you stood to benefit...>>  He keeps the speech private, hiding his distaste at saying what he's saying.  <<...it would seem likely that if we find one of the rebellion's human medical practitioners and obtain a sample of your drug, that said practitioner would then be able to utilize the Tyrennian's resources to artificially fabricate a steady supply of it.>>

Terenia doesn't respond, her arms coming up to hug herself as she walks towards Illim's quarters.

Keslin lets Ossanlin's speech wash over him, though his thoughts -- and conversations -- are elsewhere.

<<We need to be with Tess,>> Chris insists, trying to push his own body away from the table. <<What if something is wrong?>>

<<Just a moment, Chris,>> Keslin hisses in response. <<I will break away as soon as I can, I promise. I can't leave Myitt here as the only person to represent our people.>>

<<What about Keshin?>>

<<I said our people. I did not mean Yeerks, you should know better than that. I meant the rebels. Keshin is certainly no rebel.>> He shoots the turelek a dark glance, then refocuses on Ossanlin.

"Save me the posturing, Ossanlin," he says, his concern for Tess and Chris' protests making him irritable. "I don't need a speech about honor and glory. I'm not in this fight for anything like that. I am here to do what is best for my human friend here, whether that is fighting with you Andalites, running on our own, or returning to the pool for the rest of my life."

He licks his lips, frowning. "I have no delusions about the might of the Andalite Military, but your involvement in Sector Seven is of no interest to me. Individual Andalite politics mean nothing to me. What is important is that you are here, now, rather than on the ship pursuing us. If that is in our best interest in the long run, then so be it."

He looks down at the table, taking a deep breath. "When we reconvene the Council we will decide if remaining with you is the best course of action for our people. For the time being, at least, we need you to locate our missing people. I am sure Myitt will agree that that is our top priority. Now..." He sends Ossanlin a small, curt smile, "I apologize to cut my involvement from this meeting short, but one of your lieutenants sent me a private message regarding my partner. I need to make sure she is well."

Enorryma's eyes widened. <Tess is in some distress? Do you require assistance-> she turned toward Ossanlin <-if I might be dismissed long enough to check on this situation?>

Ossanlin raises an eyebrow at Keslin.  Dangerous...no loyalty but to himself.  He'd thought that the rebels at least held together.  There is something to be said for individuality and the ability to make decisions without guidance or orders, but complete self-service was dangerous.

He glances at Enorryma, nodding.  <<Take him and offer what help you can, but be careful.  This one is unpredictable.>>  He indicates Keslin.

<Go to your mate.  If you have any other questions, they can be addressed at a future time.>  He gestures to the door opposite the desk.  It leads out into a hallway that runs to the main concourse which runs to the dome.  The quickest way to the quarters he'd given to Keslin and Tess.  <If you will accept my Tactical Officer's assistance, she will be able to direct you along the quickest path.>

<<Send me a communication if there is a medical emergency, Enorryma.  I cannot afford to leave this meeting yet.  I would prefer you remain as well, but such are our needs.  If you wish to speak with me later, let me know.  Perhaps we can run together.>>

The door to the hallway slides open at his private command.

She walked toward the exit ahead of Chris. <This corridor will get us there fastest; the main corridor follows the ship's curvature and is longer by nearly half.>

Keshin listens to Ossanlin, noting the equally nasty barbs directed at him. It seems as though Ossanlin's loyalties are not to his crew or even to the rebels, but to his own honor. Keshin gives a notable roll of his eyes at the entire speech about what Ossanlin wants to do with the Tyrennian. <Get a load of this, Joanne. Now the blue idiot wants to save the world.>

<It could work, you know. Not righ' now, but with some time an' things. Besides, if he gives a free supply of th' good stuff, we're set for life.>

<.....you have a point. I just loathe being dependent on someone else again.>

<You're pretty damn dependent on me, Kess.>

She had him there. Keshin smirked slightly to himself at her wit, but turned back to Ossanlin more seriously. "Do you truly believe you can succeed? What you're hoping for isn't a simple undertaking----it will involve curing the deep-held prejudices and personal motives of multiple groups. You'll have to screen every new recruit. You at least have one thing going with us..." Keshin gives a slight glance toward the place where Keslin was once sitting. "...we have only one loyalty at the moment: whatever's best for us."

That was Keshin's subtly worded way of saying that if Ossanlin could provide him what he needed, he'd work for him. They simply weren't in a position to bargain now, or at all if Ossanlin made good on his word. They had had a...."solution..." for a while beforehand, but he was long gone. Keshin had to wonder where in the world he was, and if he even remembered them.
