Why did Elfangor have the Escafil device?
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:53:23 AM »
Now, I know the real answer is "because otherwise the story wouldn't work out", but damn it, I want a good in-universe explanation!

(Just as I know the real answer behind Yeerks addressing eachother as binary genders is because it's a lot simpler to read and write than having to make up genderless terms.)

But seriously, according to the laws of the Andalites, Elfangor had no good reason for having the Escafil Device on board his fighter. They all receive the morphing technology in training, so it's not as if it's something that would reasonably be even on the Dome ship. The law of Seerow's Kindness implies strongly that, indeed, carrying the blue box around would be risky if not illegal. Why would you need it? And on a fighter?

Now Elfangor is obviously a special case, but it strains disbelief that he'd think "Hmm, my son needs morphing technology!" or something and smuggle an escafil device on board his fighter.

My personal thought... Well, Elfangor planned to find the Time Matrix on Earth, and go back to change everything. One of the things he might most like to change? Arbron's nothlitism. This serves dual function of an emotional goal -- getting his friend restored -- and a relief of his feelings of guilt and cowardice, as he felt Arbron would make a better war-prince than him anyhow.

(Mind... the Escafil device doesn't actually work on nothlits... But maybe he was planning to modify it somehow with the time matrix? I don't know, it's the best explanation I have so far.)

Personally, I don't think its a stretch of the imagination to believe that if Elfangor didn't really die, he'd fake his death and stay on earth, or just go "MIA" so the Andalites would think he was dead.  He was definitely guilty for leaving his son, and only left to save him in the long run.  I'm sure he would have thought "hey, now I can both save earth (raising an army there) and find my son and be the father I'm supposed to be."  Or at the very least, he probably wanted to find Loren and Tobias, give them morphing power to become Andalites, then take them away from Earth.

Honestly, in retrospect I'm kind of surprised that wasn't touched upon in the Andalite chronicles.

it was, albeit indirectly.  the elimmist told him about the future, and likely told him about needing the blue box.

Your explanation is probably one of the better ones I've seen in response to this question. Mine involves a bowl of morphing cubes with a sign saying, "Please Take One" on a little table in the pilot's ready room.

In anycase, as russianspy pointed out, Andalite Chronicles did give us that one little hint. The Ellemist showed Elfangor the timelines where his son, his brother, and four other humans would join up and go on to fight the Yeerks.

So, Elfangor is working aboard the GalaxyTree when his ship gets the order to go to Earth. Before doing so, they pick up a new Aristh, which turns out to be Ax. Elfangor is like, "Oh crap. This is it." Maybe he makes a quick trip to wherever the morphing cubes are made and he pulls the old, "I'm famous, give me stuff" to get a cube and no one questions this well known hero to the people.

Actually, yes, I do like that idea. I always forget that he saw not only Tobias' timeline but that of Ax and the others.

Eh, he probably just stole it.

How did he smuggle it on board the Dome ship and then onto his fighter?  Wouldn't the Andalites have security measures to prevent the smuggling of morphing cubes?
