I heard the reaction from Rachel and I wasn't that surprised.<Rachel...no one cares a rat's rear anyway.>I replied as I looked back at her with the intense hawk eyes.<My life its...just so rough..I have an aunt and uncle that doesn't care for me, my parents are...who knows dead somewhere and...>I stopped myself as I spread my wings and turned my head looking at them.<I guess I just figured you guys would think that maybe I did morph at some point but this body is just so...makes all the bad stuff go away.>

It was the first time I had ever told my real emotions to anyone but I figured Rachel would be the best to tell them to.

I leaned back in the chair heavily as Tobias told me everything. Suddenly it all made sense. I couldn't imagine how it would feel to deal with family that didn't care about you. Sure, my parents were divorced but they were civil and sometimes my dad would visit or I'd go visit him. I held the hawk gaze with difficulty and as Tobias looked at his wings, explaining why he loved being a hawk so much, I decided that this would be another cause to fight for. If I had to be strong for Tobias as well as Jake considering the Tom situation, then I would do my best. I stood up, determined.

"OK. Well, you can't live with your aunt or uncle," I spoke briskly, "So we'll have to find a solution to that. If you get stuck as a hawk, you're going to have to think about food and survival." I made an effort to try not to appear judgmental at the thought of him trapping himself for real, but I refused to say 'when'. We still needed to deal with the Yeerks. "Cassie has the barn. Maybe...is there anywhere in the barn where you could sleep? There's always the bit up in the rafters with all the hay in. You can sleep there, Cassie can always bring you food, you can morph up there..." I was trying to come up with a human solution, not a hawk solution and I focused on planning in order to push my emotions aside for the time being.

(Sorry guys I would have posted earlier but my parents are arguing again about something so...yeah.)

I looked up at Rachel and didn't really have a reply. Was she really actually letting me trap myself in morph? <I didn't really think too much into it actually cause I've been alittle busy trying to save the world.>I said as if it was no big deal.<I was thinking I'd do some more flying around town to see if I could spot any known controllers like Chapman or..>I was uneasy at the next word.<...Tom and see if I can learn alittle more.>It was the honest truth of what I was going to do, but after I had spilled my feelings to Rachel it was also obvious I was doing something so I could remain in morph as long as possible.

I almost panicked when Tobias told me his plans because I assumed he meant to actually trap himself in order to fly around. I replied quickly,

"Well, when it comes to Chapman, the obvious place he'll be is school so I think simply going in as ourselves should be enough when it comes to observation. And...well..." I started to improvise. "...I'm Jake's cousin and Tom's cousin, maybe I should be the one following Tom." That probably sounded really obvious... "Look, Tobias...I get that your life sucks as a human, but why limit yourself to just one body? Hawks are cool, but there are bigger birds out there that could take them down...they could starve or be poisoned or shot. Something like, I don't know, a tiger, could probably take a bullet and get away with it, but a hawk? I don't think so...and if you break a wing or something, that's it." I felt for him, I really did, but I couldn't let him trap himself.

I heard Rachel as what she said was true about Chapman, Tom and then about hawks as I nodded my head.<Yes Rachel your right but every life, every single body in the world has their own dangers.>I then flapped my wings and left her desk to land on the window.<I'll be fine Rachel I'm not doing nothing now about it, only thinking.>I told her as nice as possible which was the honest truth. While I did have thoughts of it, doing it was an entire different thing.

I relaxed as Tobias confirmed that he wasn't planning anything just yet. Maybe this crisis was averted.  I gave him a smile and asked casually,

"So are you heading to the Gardens today? What kind of battle morph are you thinking of getting?" As for me, I'd thought about it yesterday but for now I decided to wait until I saw an animal I felt some kind of connection with. I wouldn't know until I set eyes on it.

I turned back to face Rachel.<Yeah I'll go to The Gardens.>then I spread my wings as if showing off.<My battle morph I'm thinking will be old hawkeye right here.>I said as I had alot of time already as the hawk and knew as much as I could almost.

I kept my face straight and nodded casually.

"I guess that does make sense. You must have mastered that morph by now! And I guess you don't have to fight for control like we will when we first morph whatever it is we acquire." I wasn't going to let the keen hawk eyes see that I was skeptical about the idea...but I guess he could always distract people by flying around their heads or something. I then realised I had no idea what time it was, so I needed to check when I had to set off for the Gardens. I wasn't going to admit it aloud, but I was going to fly there because there was definitely something thrilling about being able to grow my own personal set of wings and soar above everyone else.

I folded my wings in and on the outside I couldn't show it I was blushing on the inside.<I still have to control alittle instincts but its pretty easy after awhile.>I told her.<Well I'll catch you later Rachel, you be careful at The Gardens ok?>I told her as it seemed by the tone of my thought-speak I cared for her safety more then my own when I was the one as the hawk.

When I got to the gardens, I saw the usual spectacle. Families, children running around excited with their parents behind them. How many of them weren´t really human beings? I shoved these thoughts out of my head as I looked at the watch I had brought as a precaution., it was funny because before this I had never really cared about time.

I nodded to Tobias and smiled at him, encouraged that he wasn't going to do anything mad. I replied,

"Yeah, catch you later." I was about to think about morphing eagle when I remembered that I'd told my mom that I'd go to The Gardens to see Cassie. I looked back at the hawk on my desk, "I'm gonna head out now but I'll leave the window open in case you need to come back or something." I had no idea why he would need to come back, but I felt better about the thought of him being in a warm, safe room rather than out on a cold, rainy night or something. I opened a drawer desk to take out my allowance to use for my entry ticket and I left my room and went downstairs. Mom was out, apparently a case had come in that needed her attention. Luckily she'd left a message letting me know that she'd said it was OK for Jordan to keep an eye on Sara this time around. I made myself some toast, ate it quickly and set out for the Gardens.

A bus ride and a walk later, I was nearing The Gardens. It was pretty busy and I had to stop myself wondering if any of these innocent families were actually Controllers. I ignored my mind and after a little while longer, I saw a familiar face.

"Hey Sam!" I shouted. "I didn't expect to see you here! You here to see the animals too?" I waved to him and asked. It was good to see him again after the stress of yesterday and of worrying about Tobias.

<Thanks Rachel.>I said as I was happy to hear she'd leave her window open...maybe I would come back later and talk with her some more. But right now I had a job to do as I turned and then opened my wings and let myself go in the air as I flew straight up and in a slow circle over Rachel's house as I followed the bus and her walk as I would watch over Rachel and the others today.<Hey!> I said as a joke in Rachel's mind.<I am not an average animal.>I said playfully, letting her know I was ok still and not down or letting anything bother me.

I wasn´t expecting anyone for a while, so I was a little startled when Rachel appeared some minutes before the hour, she played her part perfectly.
-Hi Rachel- I said - Nah, the rides is what I really like about this place- before this happened, the rides at the gardens were some of the most exciting things of my life - You expecting anyone?-

After all of the morning routine ended I explained that I would be meeting my friends at the Gardens and Dad offered himself to drive me there, while we were on the car I thought hard on an excuse to get home late, as the yeerk pool attack could take hours, blaming myself for not doing this earlier I talked -Er... Dad?- He looked at my through the front mirror, paying atenttion -It´s just that, we´re staying quite late, cause... they´re having a dolphing show almost at night- It was a lame excuse, I prayed Dad would buy it -Huh, weel you know what your time limit is, dont you young man?- Basically he was allowing me to stay outside.

I rolled over at about 11 AM. "Ugghhhh" I moaned. Late. I was probably three miles from the Gardens. I threw on some clothes and shoved a whole poptart in my mouth before jumping on my bike and pedaling like a maniac. I had four dollars in my pocket. I heard they were having some kind of special for "but two tickets, get one for a dollar" If I really hurried I could probably do that.



((Remember Marco doesn't have very much cash. I remember a similar excuse in the first book.))

cassie had to go to school before we could properly finish our conversation, but I did not dwell too much on her reaction. I just kept telling myself that this was the right thing to do, and unlike my brother I was not in a position to not do as I was supposed to. I learned that there was a lace called Radio Shack where I could purchase most of what I needed, but I would need to find money. Soon it was time for school to be over, and everyone was heading to the Gardens. I found Sam and Rachel outside, and approached in Human form. "Greetings. I have arrived. Though I do not currently have money for tickets, kets, so i was planning on flying in." I said quietly.
