Did we ever really get to know Tobias?
« on: August 10, 2008, 01:28:51 PM »
I won't say he's underdeveloped but Tobias was the Animorph we least knew and related to the most.

I think I liked The Illusion so much because we actually got a glimpse into Tobias really was than any other book. Even Ax was less of an enigma to us then Tobias was.
This great evil - where's it come from?
How'd it steal into the world?
What seed, what root did it grow from?
Who's doing this?
Who's killing us, robbing us of life and light, mocking us with the sight of what we mighta known?
Does our ruin benefit the earth, aid the grass to grow and the sun to shine?  Is this darkness in you, too?  Have you passed through this night?

Tobias didn't exactly have a personal life (due to being trapped in morph) so I guess that made it seem like the only time we saw him was on missions or doing something connected to the war. He didn't really have a family anyway and spent a lot of time on his own or hanging out with Ax when they weren't on a mission, so we didn't really see him unwind after a mission like we saw with the other human Animorphs. Ax and Tobias didn't have a home to go to, but Ax talked about Andalite things a lot so maybe that's why you feel like Ax was less of an enigma.

Although I understand what you're saying, I think I identified with Tobias quite well. To me, all the Animorphs had a part of their personality that I identified with, which is one of the reasons I liked the characters so much.

I just wish we had more background on Tobias.  I really loved #33 because it gave us a small taste, but otherwise it was just that his life sucks.
YOU'RE WINNER !

Yeah I did enjoy #33 for the same reason. It was nice seeing some flashes of his life, especially the few pleasant ones. It was also cool seeing flashes of Elfangor's memories.

I didn't really like #33 that much. The part with the flashes of memory started to confuse me.

Wow.  Classy.
"Well, that idea might make a stupid idea feel better about itself."
"His goat killed you?"
"I love you shovel."
"Your conscience calls you on the telephone?"

ah ok. it's a good thing you didn't say it then. I wouldn't have cared and you'd probably get banned.

hmm...well yeah that too. but even if I did understood, I wouldn't care because I don't care what other people call me as long as I feel good about myself.

Yorick, you don't have to make fun of morfowt everytime he gets confused by something. And morfowt, you should know not to provoke Yorick.

Back to the topic, I can understand not liking #33 (even though I did) as it was the kind of book that might bore you if you weren't interested in character development. Personally I found it to be really interesting, plus we get to see Ax and Tobias bond more when Tobias is practicing his Andalite morph (that was a funny scene!)
