"I know what it does," says the woman emptily, voice thick with tears.

She glances back at Jeffrey, eyes shining. "Get the hell off my back, ****. You don't know what you're doing."

"Goddamn..." Merc sighs and walks back to his seat at the bar. "That's what I get for thinking I can help," he mumbles to himself before ordering yet another shot of whiskey. His wallet is nearly drained at this point, but it doesn't matter much, considering how far away from home he is. "For god's sake, if I don't get back to Earth soon I'm gonna lose my mind..."

"What, did you order this for me?" The woman chokes a dark laugh. "And you're the one who's gonna lose his mind? What kind of ****ed up **** orders drugs when...when someone else is...is..." She trails off, dizzily adding, "I'm so s-sorry." Thick sobs wrack through her again and she buries her head in her black sleeves, face down on the counter.

"DRUGS!?" Merc screams. He turns to the bartender, eyes wide with rage. "I ask for something to stop her crying, and you give her ****ing drugs!?" He slams down his shot glass, shattering it in the process. "What is WRONG with this place!?" Clearly, he was done keeping his cool facade.

The bartender simply stares at Merc, drying a glass, expression blank.

The woman, for her part, looks up sharply at the sound of the shattering glass.

She blinks at Merc and says, meekly, "Can you get me some tissues, for Christ's sake?" Another shudder runs through her and she gasps, "Oh, ****, oh...****, what the ****..." Even as she stares at Merc, her eyes glaze over distantly, not really seeing him.

Verdana just puts his head down on the table. this situation was getting more uncomfortable by the second, and he didn't really know if he could fix it. Or even get involved. This sounded like a job for Mom, and she was probably in another dimension right now. His eye lights dimmed as he tried to tune things out a bit. Should he speak? Should he keep quiet? What was a kid to do?

"Jesus . . ." Merc's voice is thin and shaky, and he looks like he's about to be sick. A strong contrast from just seconds before. "I'm millions of miles away from home, probably not even in the right time." It's as if the reality of the situation only sinks in. His head drops into his open hands, and the shaggy black hair that covers his head pathetically droops to either side of his face. "It's my fault Dani's dead, and now I've got this lady ****ed up. . . ." Merc's hands fall away, leaving his forehead to hit the bar. "I've got half a mind to just go outside and blow myself up."

Jeffrey raises an eyebrow, and looks over at Merc in a  mildly concerned way. "Hey hold on man, there's no need to go on doing that. You have got a lot to live for. You have to find those ****s that killed your family, right? It was an honest mistake, man! We don't even know how that crazy Bartender works!" Jeffrey's voice seems suddenly warm and benign.

There was a slight echo, or a ringing, behind the man. He holds his head, wincing. "Nope, nope...I don't want it back, okay? Okay you crazy bartender? Not after everything it put me through!" The Bartender didn't respond.

Jeffrey looks towards Myitt and says, "...I know you're wasted, okay, but you're bringing down the room."

Slowly, Merc picks his head up off the bar. "Yeah . . . yeah, you're right." He wipes off his face with his bare arm. "Sorry, I overreacted. It's just . . . this place is driving me insane." He stares down for a moment, trying his best to ignore the woman. "Bartender? Another smoke if you will? And please, just don't **** with me here."

Clarity comes over the woman and she blinks back into focus, though she grips her shivering arms.

"My husband is dead," she says hollowly. "**** the room, man. Ff--" The shuddering passes and she looks back at the bottle of red liquor, frowning. "Getting ****ed up isn't going to bring him back."

Again, with clarity, she stares at Jeffrey. Then she looks around at Dalik, Merc, and the skeletal goat creature, then at William, as if seeing them for the first time.

"I shouldn't have done that," she admits. "It's going to hurt almost as bad as the pain of losing him." She laughs softly, grinning at some internal dialogue.

Then she focuses again on the little band. "You I think I know," she tells Dalik the Prime. "The rest of you...I'm not so sure." Wavering, she adds, "Myitt. My name, that's my name. Don't wear it out."

"I'm Verdana." His eye lights came back into focus. "I have heard drugs and booze don't always help a situation. I'm sorry about your husband. My family has dealt with loss too. If you have other family, you should probably visit them. It's always good to have a support group you can trust."

Dalik stares at her, watching in mute fascination as the oatmeal takes effect, wincing as the glass shatters.

"Myitt," she echoes. "I know that name. Myitt One-Nine-Five. You are one of the rebels." A brief hesitation, and then she is back at the bar, watching Myitt intensely. "Where is my brother? Dalik the Lesser. I know he was with your people."

William flinches as the glass shatters, then laughs in delight. "What a marvelous place!" he says cheerfully. As the bartender approaches, he places a quiet order, then goes back to grinning as he watches the events unfold.

"It's fine, man," says Jeffrey, still rubbing his head. "I mean...Sure we don't know where we are, and we don't know how to get back, but at least all our old wounds can't come to bite us in the ass here! No regrets! No problems! And hopefully, if the Bartender doesn't **** with me, no Esper Backfire Syndrome."

Jeffrey glances at Myitt with a sigh. "And you're....the latest Yeerk, apparently. Sorry about your hubby--- That does tend to get people upset."

"Also, your brother's looking less irrelevant by the second, Dalik."

"Oh my god," Merc breathes out, staring at Myitt. "Look, I'm sorry. Trust me, I'm going through the exact same thing. If you want to talk and you don't want me dead at this point, well, I'm going nowhere soon."

He picks up the cigarette that the bartender provided, checking it for any signs of tampering. Not detecting anything, he lights it with his finger as he did before and takes a drag. "Alright. I'm with Jeffrey here. Dalik, your brother is beginning to seem pretty suspicious." Any traces of his meltdown are gone now, almost as if it never happened. "Lemme get this straight. He tells you to come here and he's nowhere to be seen. And now you're saying that he and Myitt here are on the same team? I'm not trying to say he's setting you up, but something's going on."

"And as for you . . ." Merc gestures at William with his cigarette. "Maybe it's best if . . . you know what, forget it. It's not worth having an argument over."
