Missing Controller
« on: February 28, 2011, 02:19:44 PM »
Ok, way back in #6. The Capture Visser Three ordered someone to "kill this fool" for something very trivial. This boggles my mind to no end, because he was murdered by being shot, leaving a body. What are they going to DO with it? The way the book makes it sound, they could just have vaporized him, but with a dead body they've got to hide it. And even if they don't (i.e. feeding it to the Taxxons), what will happen to his friends, family, coworkers, etc, who notice he went missing and the LAST PLACE he was seen was at a Sharing meeting? That will draw all sorts of unwanted attention to The Sharing, and even if they infest his entire family and the cops, that attention is STILL going to be there, further diminishing The Sharing's reputation. Maybe THAT'S why The Sharing never worked so well; it had a reputation for too many people going missing (aka getting chopped in half/decapitated/eviscerated/de-limbed/shot by Visser Three).

Ever read book 14? In that one, Visser Three decapitates a Controller and then complains about how the "poor Controller" had to die because of the group's incompetence. Like Cassie said, it made it seem like Visser Three hadn't just killed him.

My POINT is killing someone at a Sharing meeting would create a lot of attention.

Visser Three is an unhinged psychopath who has no patience for the infiltration mission he's supposed to be carrying out, and everyone else is too petrified to do anything about it.  That's probably the ultimate reason the Sharing never accomplished anything.

I know what you're talking about, Zakryn. I was just mentioning one of the thousands of other incidences where Visser Three did something stupid to his subordinates.

*slaps forehead* Guys, I'm just trying to see what you think about society's reaction to that. A person goes missing at a Sharing meeting, that's going to draw attention to it. Please discuss that, instead of how psycho V3 is. I already know that. ;D

     Oh...

Depends on if the person was liked. I mean, if some jerk dissapeared, would the town care?

True. In that case, Visser Three was lucky. Edriss said it best. It's a wonder someone as stupid as him would rise to the rank of military commander.

I was hoping for an engrossing conversation about this, but it seems no one cares...

I CARE!

And this is an interesting topic, but I honestly don't know what would happen if someone died (was killed) and the last place they were publicly, officially seen was going to or being at a Sharing meeting.

I'd love it if some other people offered ideas about this, though.

Did anyone miss Eva?  sure, but it's pretty easy to cover up dead controllers.  Pretty easy to cover up missing human controllers... there was probably an increase in car crashes, boating accidents, wild animal attacks in the woods, et cetera reported in California at the time.

At times like this, a quote always springs to mind. To the world you may just be one person, but to one person you may just be the world.

So, the guy may have been a jerk to the town. But that guy has a brother, or a sister, or a mother and father, or some kid sitting in the next apartment alone when his parents are out working, who misses the really nice neighbor and the stories that guy told.

I don't buy statistics like, "Oh well, only a few thousand were killed so it's not a big deal."

Sorry, but one guy being killed is one guy too many for me. And we know that there were Yeerks who lost very close friends and were equally as hurt when Visser Three just wrote someone off like that.

I don't think anyone's saying it makes V3's actions okay, just that it'd be easy to cover up. It's a small uptick in missing persons, and the Yeerks can move to infest the family members of the deceased. God, for all we know the Yeerks took the morgue and infested people coming in to see their loved ones' bodies. There are ways to cover this sort of thing up.

Did anyone miss Eva?

Well, Peter retreated to the Sad Cave for two years, so I'm saying probably.

hrmm wasnt the sharing creasted as a group that mainly recruited people who were homeless, come from bad homes, vagrants, loners etc? ppl fitting into those demographics, they could go missing and no one would either notice or care. sad but true. ive seen some cases in real life.

people like tobias for example. he was goen living as a hawk and no one in the normal everyday world gave a rats ass, except for the yeerks when they found out he was elfangors son. his relatives like his uncle or something who he lived with didn't care, i think tobias mentioned that. for all his uncle knew, tobias could have been dead.

Plus the rather chilling alternate reality of what would have happaned if Tobias had wound up in the Sharing. Mind you I never believed that reality for one second, because Rachel willingly dating Marco truly would have been science fiction but that's beside the point...

I explain it by your daily does of Yeerk run evening news:
Just like every other missing person story that's one every night, only the Yeerks generate it, tell the public, conduct the police search until the locals stop caring or they reveal yet another unsolved murder

Think about that come 6 o'clock tonight
Something, something, oh crap I pissed everyone off again....
