"It's not like we have many other options," Reyna says, surprising herself by speaking up. She glances back the way they came, then down to the ground, shifting uncomfortably as she draws attention to herself.

"I mean..." she trails off, trying to collect her jumbled thoughts that were strewn with memories of another. It was kind of like watching two movies at the exact same time. Images from Esplin's life kept popping up, distracting her from her own purpose.

"We can't just let them die," she says at last, drawing a deep breath and forcing herself to focus. "If there's any way that we can help them...we'll do it." She winces slightly at that, waiting for someone to rebuke her for speaking for them all.

Getting off the ship was a mistake....
Reli's sight drifted in and out of focus, and her balance alternated between rock-steady and wobblier than a human standing on a rolling desk chair.

She could feel her muscles rebelling at her attempts to marshall them into coordination; she needed food. The water was enough to keep her vital functions operating well... but her energy was at an all-time low...

...at least since that first week of training. I feel weaker than an infant. At least I can still think-
The universe is, instant by instant, re-created anew. There is, in truth, no Past, only a memory of the Past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. The only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.

Mesa picked up Reli's thoughts, twisted and confused, and Reyna's even more twisted and confused thoughts, combined with Esplin's.  She dimly recalled Fisher...back on the ship...asleep...

We...need rest...first, she said, looking around.  With a jolt of surprise, she realized that she had...taken authority?  Her?  Mesa-Teern, from the Te Isle...I guess I got my wish after all.

"Whoa," Marty said as Reli stumbled. He then realized just how badly his group was in need of provisions. "I agree with all of those statements; we need to help Jim and Kage. But we won't be much good if we don't take care of ourselves, and soon." He stepped over to Reli, and offered his support. Turning to the Elder, he said, "As much as I hate to encroach ma'am, would you be able to spare some food and water?"

The elder Pemalite looked as if she was considering it for a moment, not sure how to answer. Ehruf cleared his throat... or maybe he growled, it was hard to tell the difference. "You will be our guests here... with certain restrictions... and temporarily, mind you. As you can see, we do not live in a world of abundance. Ehruf seems to think you have some merit. What that may be, I fail to recognize. He will see to it that you are made comfortable." she smiled, as if making a joke.

"Thank you ma'am. You're people's hospitality is much appreciated." Marty with a slight bow.

Ehruf nodded, and stepped outside of the door opening. He waited for the others to follow him, presumably to a place with food.

Chris felt the pain in his stomach. It gurgle loudly. He was very hungry. He followed Ehruf out the Door.

<Thank you.> Reli managed to whisper to Marty.
Any other time it would shame me to be so weak that I need rely on human physical strength... but let this be the exception; he has morphed less and eaten somewhat more... and I'm sure I'll cover him at another time when he needs it.

Mesa followed Ehruf after thanking the elder.  The "restrictions" part sounded a bit...ominous, but for now she was just happy for the food.  There was something else...the ship...oh, right.  Fisher.  We have another companion, she said.  Fisher...he's back on the ship with his friends.  I believe he may be asleep...but he needs food as well.

<We will be in that Yuk'kum to the left.> he said pointing to another ramshackle hut. <Fetch your friends, and meet us there.> He looked at the group only briefly before walking in the direction he'd pointed.

"I'm on it..." Marty said. He jogged off with his eyes squinted against the sun and sand, back towards the ship. A Pemalite stood by the door of the large sheet metal structure they'd passed earlier. Marty boarded the ship, tracking sand into the interior, and stood in front of Fisher and his crew. "Corporal Fisher. The locals have agreed to share their food and water with us. We should hurry."

While they walked, Ehruf looked back a couple times. After several moments, he said, <I must admit, I am still rather... intrigued... by your group's diversity.> He then looked at Mesa over his shoulder. <You're species truly have psionic capabilities as the Kelscum do?>

Mesa nodded to show she understood as Ehruf explained where they would be.  At his question, she paused.  It didn't take a genius to know the Pemalite's hatred towards the Kelbrid.  Would he think less of her?  Should she hide...hide it?  Secrets again...Earth...this world...this is too much, she though.  But...best not to hide things.  I don't know exactly how the Kelbrid's capabilities work, she said.  But the rudiments appear to be the same, yes.  All Leerans are born with them.

Fisher was dead asleep, that was for sure. Even his fireteam had collapsed soon after in a deep snooze. Even if it was just for half an hour, it was welcome after the adrenaline-charged combat.

Too bad it didn't last longer.

Fisher could hear a sound, a distant voice that pierced the murk of sleep, calling his name. Everything began to vanish, as his consciousness came to its senses.

Like rapidly emerging from a deep pool, Fisher suddenly found himself shooting into the air on his feet with a half-yelled exclamation.

"Yessir Sarge, what is it-" As his consciousness returned so did his memory and he shut up. Dazed, he shook his head to get his surroundings. Marty was the summoner, and Fisher wondered what it was all about? Hearing something about locals and food, Fisher roused his friends with a light boot to the ribs.

"Alright fellas, get up. We've got locals with vittles they'll share." A quick thought later though and he turned to Marty with a strange look. "But don't we have food and water here?" He waved his arm to the stores behind himself.
"Now I can't speak for everyone; at least not until 'The Device' is completed."

Reli drew her thoughts to focus and half-babbled a reply to Fisher's question, including his fireteam in her thought-speech.

<Not all of us can metabolize meat, and if we have to leave suddenly from here, we'll need to save what water and food we have. We can't ask the locals to stock our ship for us. I->

She cut down her speech to be privately directed just at Fisher.

<-I am not able at present to give protection to the team if they need it. You and your men can make use of the weapons we have found and made. Please, at least one of you come and give cover? I'm useless until I can eat and sleep.>

She cringed again at her own enforced helplessness, but she forced herself to keep following the group as Marty led the way.

Reyna followed, lagging behind the main group. Her movements were sluggish and she was finding it a bit difficult to focus. Water, she realized slowly. I didn't drink anything on the trip here. I was too distracted by the Dracon Beams. Her feet were dragging, but she finally made it to the ship. Marty had gone inside, but the climb up the ramp seemed like too much work. Instead, Reyna leaned against the hull, closing her eyes and tilting her head upwards to catch the sun. Consciousness seemed to become fluid as she slipped in and out, dehydration combining with a strange uneasy feeling in her stomach.

From the back of the group, Chris noticed Reyna slip off. He had been walking next to her and she looked a little dizzy. He decided to follow her. When she leaned against the ship he spoke up. "Are you ok?"

Marty turned behind him. He seemed surprised that Reli had followed him, and Reyna and Chris too. As Fisher woke up his crew, Marty walked over the the water supply and scooped out a deep 'dish' full of water. "Here..." he said, setting it on the ground for Reli to use, and looked at the others down the ramp. "Either of you want some water while I'm at it? We don't really need to save this anymore..."

<Fascinating.> Ehruf said. <That would be quite useful, I'd imagine....> At that moment, they arrived at their destination. Ehruf barked out a few native phrases. He then held the curtain out of the way, and gestured for the others to enter the yuk'kum. Other Pemalites could be seen moving about, setting out various spreads of food items. There was a large basket of smoked meat, which was obviously the main course, as well as much smaller amounts of roots, tubers, and other dried vegetation. Jars filled with sloshing liquids - some were water, and some were presumably a soup of sorts- were brought out and set in the middle of the open area with the rest of the meal. After doing as Ehruf asked, the few Pemalites who were already in the yuk'kum sat to the side and talked quietly amongst themselves, glancing occasionally at the group of assorted aliens who entered. <I hope that this will be to your liking.... Help yourselves.>

"M'okay..." Reyans says, but her voice is just a whisper. She cracks her eyes open, finding Chris' face nearby. "Just need a little nap..."

For some reason, though, she cannot drift off entirely. Something in the back of her mind will not allow her to fall asleep, despite the warmth of the sun and the exhaustion in her muscles. Something is nagging at her, that she cannot quite put her finger on.

Without really realizing what she is doing, Reyna slides down the hull of the ship until she is sitting on the ground, leaning against it. Drawing her knees up to her chest she stares off blankly, her eyelids at half mast.
