We subconsciously love the Helmacrons
« on: September 29, 2010, 11:32:58 PM »
A lot of people say they hate the Helmacrons because they're a lot more annoying than roaches.

I think they've done their role. They're supposed to be annoying, and they achieved their goal. The Animorphs were annoyed to wits' end by the Helmacrons, as well as us, the readers. And the Helmacrons haven't shrunk us yet. YET.

So I think, if there would be a rewrite, despite fan protests, the Helmacrons should stay.  :) C'mon, they're funny. Admit it. :P
I'm just a writer, and my main goal was always to entertain. But I've never let Animorphs turn into just another painless video game version of war, and I wasn't going to do it at the end. I've spent 60 books telling a strange, fanciful war story, sometimes very seriously, sometimes more tongue-in-cheek. I've written a lot of action and a lot of humor and a lot of sheer nonsense. But I have also, again and again, challenged readers to think about what they were reading. To th

Yeah I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be annoying. There's a difference between having an annoying character that you're supposed to be annoyed with, and having an annoying character that the creator expects you to take seriously or sympathize with.

No, you're supposed to be annoyed with the Helmacrons. SO, for that reason they should stay. However, the Helmacron books SUCKED, least favourite of all the ones I read, I really think those should be rewritten. The species themselves could stay, I actually liked the guys, just annoying, it was the writing style, and storyline, that annoying the ever loving PISS out of me. :P

Yeah, they succeed in their purpose, which is to annoy people, but the question then becomes "why on Earth did KA and Grant have 'annoying people' as their goal?".

And both of their books were just pathetically bad. #24 has some good humor, but paragraph upon paragraph is devoted to "stuff's big!" as if the Anis have never morphed anything small before, and #42 is just embarrassing.

NOTE: this is not a RP comment.

I like the Helmacrons... those little egotistical fleas. They just cause so much mayhem; I find them funny, and yeah, annoying as heck.

They're funny and annoying...which is why that sort of reminds me of Marco. I once dreamed Marco got trapped in a mutant form of Helmacron/himself.

Naw, my twenty-two year old self still insists these are adult books written for kids and the Helmacrons totally don't fit into that mould :p

I think, to be frank, that all the alien species in Animorphs had too clear of a purpose initially. The Andalites were the "good guys," the Yeerks "the bad guys," and the Hork-Bajir were the "seriously badass minions." Now granted the world of the books eventually expand until this isn't true anymore. Like at all. And there were multiple other whacked species by this point, like the Skrit Na. And it already had started by #24, but not as far as it went. But still.

So if I were a writer creating a book series for kids, I almost would want to create a species that totally screwed that up. A species that was just plain annoying. x3 So yeah, it was total filler. And #42 was written so badly that I just left the series at that point. XD

But you've gotta love the little bastards.  ;)

I agree with Red that this series should have been directed towards older teenagers or young adults, but for some reason were directed towards preteens. Though I was 15 when they started coming out, so I was at just the right age.

I was 17 when I started reading them. >.< Always been embarrassed of that. Lol. IDK, I thought the Helmacrons were a good filler, in theory, I've always thought it'd be cool if there were a planet, life supporting, out there that was TINY, and had TINY little people on it, so that was cool enough, but... Ugh. The books they were in! Honestly, those are my two least favourite of the entire series!

Yeah... I mean, from what I can gather the pre-teens that read them weren't total morons but for a series that dealt with massively important and challenging things, the Helmacrons were a little patronising.
