Okay, hopefully this hasn't been done before on this board. On some other boards I'm a member of, we've done various bracket competitions and they've been pretty fun. I was wondering, since this board seems pretty active, if y'all would be interested in doing an Animorphs bracket competition?

For those who may not know, a bracket competition puts two opponents, or seeds, together in successive match-ups. Groups of match-ups make up rounds, with the winners of each match-up going on to the next round. Eventually the competitor which defeats all the others in declared the winner.

Here's a visual of what it would look like:http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=250892&tclass= (The winner's name will be in the middle, in red.) We could do a competition for favorite Animorphs book, favorite character, or even something else.

If enough of you are interested, what I'd do is use a random generator to match each of the books/characters with an opponent book/character, and announce which book/character would be competing against which. We'd vote on one match-up at a time, and I'd post the results. Let me know if anyone's up for this!

I'm for this, I love forum tournaments! I vote for favorite character over book though, it leaves more options.

Out of curiosity, what random generator do you use? I've got a little program called 'The Hat' myself.

Cool. Maybe anyone else replying to this thread could specify whether you'd like to do book or character? Whichever one gets five votes first is what we'll do (assuming anyone else is interested! ;))

I use random.org, personally. Now would "The Hat" be a computer program, or an actual hat? :)

Computer program. Best program for this kind of thing I've ever found yet, me and some friends have run many tournaments on some other forums using it. ^_^

I say you do characters, rather than books.  It might even be interesting to specify which morph the animorphs are in so we'd have a couple copies of them.  I'm not sure about that though.  What would be the deciding factor in match with grizzly Rachel vs flea Jake?  We'd have to set down some different victory conditions for something like that to work out.

We could do a straight "Favorite Character" tournament, and while that's going on play with the parameters of the morph tournament thing. For now, I'll consider there to be two votes for a favorite character tournament.

I thought this was supposed to be a "vs" thing, rather than "who's your favorite".  I know favoritism always ends up playing some kind of role anyways, but you actually get an interesting discussion if it's at least a battle.  Unless someone clearly just pawns.

Anyways, there's already a poll about favorite animorphs, so that part probably isn't necessary.

Well, it is a vs. thing, in a way. It's a bunch of mini-competitions, but in the end, people are going to vote for who they like best. If it's a character vs. character, you're essentially asking the forum to pick its favorite character. For example, I seed Cassie vs. Visser Three. Who do you want to win? Who do you like more?

And who knows, maybe one of the Animorphs wouldn't win, if all the characters in the series were seeds.

All right, I guess not too many people are interested in doing this.

I think favourite character is too predictable, unless we have some kind of unusual set-goal.  I think book-vs-book would be interesting (with a small blurb of a summary!)  I think it would require more thought, and we could possibly learn something about how we judge storytelling.

All right, it appears that 6 people are interested. 3 people wanted character, 1 wanted book, and 2 didn't specify. So here's what I'll do: Let me compile a list of characters, and I'll announce the first match-up ASAP.

Post Merged: October 07, 2010, 10:52:23 PM
I've compiled a list of 32 important characters (not that we can't do favorite book or something else at a later date.) So, without further ado, welcome to the Animorphs Favorite Character Competition!

The winner of each match-up will be decided by who gets three votes first. One vote per member! I will post a link to the competition after this match-up ends so you all can see how it's going. And, according to the generator, the first match-up is...kind of interesting...

Gafinilan VS David

I vote for David.

Gafinilan - 0
David - 1

Any chance you could list or link a short bio for some of the more obscure characters? Cuz I gotta be honest....Gafinilan isn't ringing any bells in ol' Gyt's head here. :s

I got this from Wikipedia:

An Andalite trapped on Earth after the battle with the Blade Ship. He is an esteemed and highly regarded fighter among Andalite warriors. He and his friend, Mertil-Iscar-Elmand, became trapped on Earth and forced to hide. Although Gafinilan grew to morph a human and become a homeowner, he was inflicted with a fatal illness called Soola's Disease. Aware of the situation, he grew plants in his Greenhouse to prolong his time to live so he could continue to care for his injured friend Mertil. After Mertil was captured, Gafinilan made a bargain with Visser Three to trade a healthy Andalite warrior for him, and sought to do so after encountering the Animorphs (during which time Gafinilan morphed an opossum and an owl to spy on the Animorphs). When he learned that there was no Andalite for him to trade, he divulged the situation and agreed to aid them on the rescue of Mertil on the condition that they be left alone afterwards. He presumably died by the end of the series, but as he was never heard of again, this remains in doubt. Gafinilan is described as having an impressive warrior's physique, with his torso looking like a carpenter's, and a horse body resembling a very large Clydesdale.
