Well I now I'm gonna ask why you couldn't go bacteria? They have DNA.
for that matter so do plants, but I'm under the impression that they couldn't morph that.
Why not?

it specifically said they could morph any ANIMAL. plants and bacteria are not animals. and plankton is only animals if you are talking about ZOOplankton, which are the larvae of several different kinds of animals from clams to fish.

so I add zooplankton to the list. it would be useless and creepy to morph something so small

exactly.

"Morph? Morph how?" Rachel asked, her eyes narrowed.

EDIT: sorry, original version not clear.

The extraterrestrial species they morph aren't part of kingdom Animalia.  They didn't develop on Earth.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they can morph anything with a nervous system, subject to a very small size limit. (mosquito, for example, was too dangerous to repeat)

Roaches, mosquitoes and moths. Because I really hate them, I can't approach a roach nor a moths, and I can't touch a mosquito without kill it! >_<
Except that... slugs... because I already looks like a slug, and ... really it'd be so horrible to morph a slug >_< I mean... I prefer even my own body!

I have no problem with moths, but roaches only deserve the "touch" of my shoe.

yes I'm aware of the animal limitation, but I want to know WHY?
Morphing seems to be fundamentally about extracting, storing and replicating DNA; why is it that only animal dna can be used and not plants and bacteria and etc.

And most animals aren't sentient; the morphers minds is supposed to be linked to the morph somehow, so I don't see how being a plant would render them unable to morph bac
Something, something, oh crap I pissed everyone off again....

I remember rachel morphed some kind of alien plant in 48, and Visser three has at least one plant-like monster morph from the Hork-Bajir Homeworld. So morphing plants can work.

The instance involving Rachel was powered by the Crayak, and therefore is not credible as 'realistic', and the creature from the Hork-Bajir Homeworld is an animal, it just resembles a plant. (It is described in greater detail in the Hork-Bajir Chronicles).

Oh, it's an animal that resembles a plant? My mistake.

Well if you hand wave Rachel's morph too, then I have nothing.

I like what Truth said about the animal needing a nervous system, that makes sense and flows what is show as possible in the series.

I wouldn't want to morph insects of any kind, too easy to smush, and too many insecticides in every household.

A spider, maybe, but same principle, too many anti-arachnid sprays.

Although morphing into a trantula and scaring the **** out of some chick would be priceless.

I'd never want to morph any type of fish, unless it was higher/est on the food chain. Nor if it is considered "pretty" and someone would be tempted to collect and display me.

Ew, hell no! plus, if someone found you, and tried to take you out? They'd disconnect your body, and you'd still be alive just as a head. How sucky would that be?
