yeah, but that's kind of intentional. they were planning to make every title start with "the", not to mention it's one of the most commonly used words, like "a".

Smirk doesn't necessarily mean you're a sarcastic jerk, it's just an expression. Like smiling doesn't mean you're a happy go lucky clown.

And the Marco/LOTR thing makes perfect sense to me, because I have a friend who read LOTR's several times starting in grade school, but barely ever reads anything else, and only read anything while he was in school under protest.

Yes, but most of the people in the series who were smirking were making a smug comment, or were Yeerks x3 The Yeerks did a lot of the smirkage, if I recall.  Not necessarily sarcastic jerks...but more likely to be. ^^

Speaking of LotR and Yeerks, isn't the word Yeerk itself the word for 'orcs' in Elvish?  'Yrch'...heheh, nerdy.
