While I would love to see how modern effects could make the retelling of this story better. I fear Disney would infantilize the darker elements of this series.

to be honest, i think what will make a difference is whether or not applegate is involved or not

as an example, i watched disney's adaptation of percy jackson, and honestly it's a good one, trying its best to respect the original novel and its tone while also modifying what needs to be modified and adding some interesting elements
but it was possible only because percy jackson's author, rick riordan, was also supervising the series

i dont trust disney to do a great job on its own, but in collaboration with the authors it could be interesting to watch
