Hork-bajir not similar to humans?
« on: February 25, 2009, 05:19:45 AM »
ok so the books always described the hork-bajir as looking NOTHING like a human. well... 2 arms, 2 legs, 1 head, 2 eyes... sounds remotely human to me... what are your thoughts on this?

I don't remember where it says, or if it says, that Hork-Bajir are nothing like Humans. So I don't know the context around that statement.

But beyond that, there aren't a lot of similarities between alien bodies
and say, humans. Real life turns out not to be like Star Trek. Aliens are not just humans wearing funny ears, nose putty, and costumes. There is nothing remotely human about a Hork-Bajir.

I think they mean, if you saw the silhouette of a Hork-Bajir, you would relize "Hey, that ain't no homo sapien!"

I think she was referring to the whole Star-Trek concept of aliens, where they simply have funny foreheads or different colored skin but are completely human.

They're like humans in a very basic way.  But all over they're nothing like humans or anything on Earth.

Hork-Bajir are roughly humanoid, but so are Chimpanzees and you wouldn't confuse a Human with a Chimp.

I wouldn't consider them humanoid, myself. ^^() I mean, birds have one head, two legs, two "arms" (well, wings, but skeletally similar to arms), and two eyes, too. But birds also have a tail, legs jointed like a Hork-Bajir's, and a beak. I consider Hork-Bajir to be more like a large dinosaur or bulky bird than a human, personally...

I always thought it was funny. "Alright folks, go for the throats. They're like us, but not. Just slap the humans around for a bit though."
Until then we fight.

Ffff Taxxon smiley! =D
 :taxxon:

....That said. Yeah, they're more humanoid than those two critters, I agree. But their faces are pretty far from human, their bodies are... well, not completely un-human, but certainly heavily modified. Personally, I'd consider Andalites more humanoid just 'cause of the head and torso, but that might just be my opinion. ^^()

And yeah, what Starsword said always made me confused, too. *laughs* I guess you can see it as hypocritical or altruistic, depending on your mood.

I think people might be confusing the term "humanoid" with "bipedal".

Hork-Bajir are bipeds, which means they have 2 arms, 2 legs, 1 head, 2 eyes, etc. Well, not necessarily all of those, but the 2 arms and 2 legs bit, at least. But being bipedal in itself doesn't make one humanoid.

And really, when you look at just the basic bone structure, there are a lot of similarities between many animals. Disreguaring things with exoskeletons, and snakes and stuff like that, of course. But if you take a look at bone charts, you'll notice that both humans and, say, dogs, have a spine. They both have clavicals. They both have tribia bones, and femurs. They both have hip bones, they both have scapulas. They both have rib cages. They might be slightly different in length and width, but they're still identifiable enough to have the same names.

So, the fact that a Hork-Bajir shares that? Probably just because it's a successful way for nature (or in this case the Arn) to make bodies.
