Corliss looks from Tamora to Myitt in surprise, watching Tamora stalk off toward the hatchway. It was still startling, seeing a woman who was like a carbon copy of Terenia. He grips Myitt's shoulders and searches her eyes.
"What happened?" he asks.
Myitt just shakes her head again, shakily wiping her eyes.
When she speaks, it is Tara, using her own voice. "Myitt killed the Yeerk inside Tamora," she says, her voice quavering but not because of her own tears. "She used the AKR while Zorish was in the pool, waiting to return to the girl. Zorish had been in my head...he knew everything. Even a memory wipe could have harbored a risk."
Corliss nods. "But Myitt...why use that bloody evil thing? So you had to kill him...why'd you--"
"I don't know!" Myitt suddenly snaps. "I don't know, okay? Maybe I didn't have enough time to disconnect the device. Maybe I wanted to make him suffer. Does that satisfy you?" At the look of consternation on Mike's face, she adds sullenly, "Don't you hate me, too."
"I don't hate you," says Corliss. "Myitt. Don't be silly. But you scare me, sometimes. You can't fight them by acting like them."
"I know," Myitt whispers, bowing her head.
"Come on. Let's join the others." He puts an arm around her shoulders and glances back at the pool. "Who's that, then?"
"Huh? Oh...it's Sukohn. No, no, I didn't kill him," she says glumly, waving a hand.
Corliss stops her behind Tamora, waiting for the girl to move. He wouldn't blame her if it took her a while to do so, what with the crowd outside...and, he knew, Terenia was out there.
