Elayne's smile widened, emboldened by Mar's seeming new approval of the boy's dreams. "You'll do well, Trey," she murmured with an approving nod.

Then her tone changed to one of curiosity. "What you said before... about fighting for your choice. How are you going to address those who opposed me--who said no Yeerk has a right to infest anyone, even if it's the host's own choice?"

As she leaned back in her seat to be more in line with Mar, she noticed Corliss watching them and gave him a nod of acknowledgement. He seemed a nice fellow, if suddenly a little more serious-looking than he had been before, and it occurred to her that he might have some advice for Trey beyond stockpiles of canned foods.

"I don't know," Trey admits, his lips drawn into a thin line. He looks troubled, "but they're wrong. I have to show them that they're wrong. Somehow."

He sighs then, deflating slightly as he begins to realize what a daunting task lies ahead of him. He looks especially vulnerable all of a sudden and when he speaks his voice betrays his uncertainty. "I need help."

Corliss winces as he listens to Trey.  His people couldn't spare much in the way of goods and manpower, and besides, this part-human, part-Yeerk child was clearly from some future time.  But he could at least offer advice.  He knew what it was like to start a resistance with very few people, and not much but exile and irrational hope fueling you.

He hops off his chair and walks over to the table where Trey, Elayne and Mar are talking, his expression grim.

"Hi," he says, running a hand through his disheveled hair and rubbing at the back of his neck.  "Sorry for interrupting, but Treyliss, I wonder if you have any idea what you're up against?"

Trey looks up, surprised. He hadn't realized that Corliss had been listening. He shrugs a bit, his expression clouded. "I don't know," he admits, "I grew up on a grub compound, this is my first time out of the city I was born in, let alone off planet. But I know, from my dad, that there are problems with the current system. The humans and the Andalites are trying to work together, but that doesn't always go so well when both species thinks they're better than the other."

He drops his gaze to the table, "I don't know what the off-planet situation is at all. I don't even really know the politics behind it. The treaties and laws and stuff that keeps us in our place. I know it's unfair, I know it's bad, but I don't know much else, I guess."

Corliss smiles.  "I can't help you with your current politics; In fact, it's probably better that I know nothing about them.  I think I'm from a very different environment from you, Trey--to put it bluntly, I'm from your past, or a past that has Yeerks in it.  But tell me, in your time, are you aware of the current or past presence of a Yeerk rebellion?  A resistance, sort of a civil war within the Yeerk Empire as it was while the Empire was engaged on Earth?"

Trey thinks for a moment, leaning back in his chair, then nods slowly, "Yes. Nothing specific, but I remember...somethin g my dad said when I was younger, about the Empire falling apart from within. That in the end it wasn't the Andalites or the humans that destroyed us, but ourselves."

In spite of himself Corliss feels Mike heart leap with the very idea that they might have succeeded, even in some version of their timeline.

He nods.  "I am a part of that resistance, in my own time.  That being said, I know a few things about getting people to listen to you, and even more importantly surviving when you're cast off from the society you know.  As I said, I cannot interfere too greatly, but I want to give you some advice.  First of all, and it sounds trite, but don't trust anyone.  Not me, or the human girl."  He nods at Elayne.  "Not those you've known for your whole life.  It may sound callous, and our intentions may be good ones, but in the end you must decide for yourself what is best if you're going to succeed in getting anyone's attention, and keeping it.

"That doesn't mean you shouldn't foster allies, and I think you're doing a pretty good job at that, with your dad just in the ground and all.  I'm sure he would be proud of you.  But you need to understand that there will be people, powerful ones, who will have the ability to sweep you aside like rubbish.  You need someplace safe to meet, that's a priority.  And you'll need friends, those you feel would not betray you, to help you draft what you're trying to draft and get it sent round to enough people, without it getting stomped on prior.  You want to send a strong message for Yeerk sovereignty and civil rights, as a people, in our natural state or not, correct?"

((Pretty good timing, Gaz. Keshin doesn't have anything to do either. Should we have them meet for some contrived reason? XD ))

Keshin rolls his eyes as Corliss leaves the table. <Oh, go on then! Just ignore me!>

<Well, you kind of tried to kill him.>

<Oh can't he just let bygones be bygones?>

<Kess, I think we're past that stage with the rebellion.>

<....fine. I guess we'll just get a "drink.">

Keshin sits up from his chair and wanders toward the Bar. He mutters irritably, "Grape juice. The hard stuff." The bartender nods in his odd, emotionless fashion and begins preparing high-quality grape juice not from concentrate.

Mar glances at Corliss with a sideways look but allows his presence. Mar is not fond of rebels, but Corliss could help the boy. And helping the boy seems to be what sweet Elayne wants. "So it seems as though you succeed," Mar mutters to Corliss dryly in response to Trey's comment. "I give you and Myitt my congratulations. May you have a party as soon as possible."

He then glances at Trey and says, "You will need both inside political support and people willing to turn a blind eye. You will also need living space, supporters, and resources. None of these items are easy to get at any given time due to the secrecy of such rebellions. Corliss says that you cannot trust anyone, but not at least pretending to hold certain alliances is folly. A true rebellion cannot get resources without them."

Trey nods, looking from Corliss to Mar to Elayne with wide eyes. Suddenly he feels very small, surrounded by these adults who know the ins and outs of rebellion. He tries to push aside his fear and doubt and at least put on a show of bravery, though.

"How do I start?" He asks, forcing the waver out of his voice.

Corliss sneers at Mar.  "Great, I'll be sure to print up the invitations, then," he says dully. "Assuming we live to throw the bloody confetti."

He eyes Trey.  "Well," he says with a sigh, "first thing's either the easiest thing, or the hardest.  You need to find people from your own time who support you, and are willing to throw their lives away for it.  All that rot about drafts and underground hideaways, that's great, it's very helpful.  But you know what you want to do: You want kids like you to no longer have to grow up under the thumb of oppression, and you want the Yeerk race to decide its own future.  Correct?  Then you need the manpower behind that sentiment."

He looks around the bar.  "Unfortunately, I'm not sure you'll find it here, unless you're quite lucky.  At least, not from your own timeline."

"You're probably right," Trey admits, looking around at the bar at large. The occupants there are wildly diverse, but so far he has not met anyone from his timeline. Many seem to be from a different universe altogether, and those who are from his universe appear to be from some version of his past. The thought makes him feel incredibly alone.

"I'm not ready to leave just yet, though," he says, "Even if I were, I don't exactly have a ship. I mean, I do, but it's upside down, which isn't a good start."

"Yeah, that's a real tosser," says Corliss, glancing at the doorway.  "Don't have any equipment capable of righting an overturned ship, I'm afraid."  He clears his throat and asks what's been bothering him for some time.  "What about your mum, mate?  Is she still around someplace?"

Trey flushes, and this time it is not a look of fear, but one of anger. "She ran out," he says, "when I was a kid. Don't remember much of her, actually. I was born...well, pretty soon after the war ended, actually. I'm one of the oldest grubs. My dad told me she ran out almost right after I was born. Either she was killed or went underground. I dunno. I guess she was too embarrassed by my existence to stick around."

Corliss nods faintly.  "But why would she be embarrassed?  I should think two Yeerks in human form wouldn't create human children if they weren't sincere about it?"  He shakes his head.  "Do you think she'd support you now, if she's still alive?  Surely there must be other Yeerk nothlits who aren't exactly pleased with being forced into human form."
