Keshin shrugs, listening to the peculiar conversation that the boy and Elayne seem to be having. <Nothlit Assisimilation Team? What the hell is he talking about?>

<Beats me, Kess. Guess he's just another stranded weirdo from some outlyin' universe. Those guys seem ta end up here a lot.>

<He's doing pretty well considering how hard he got brained in the head. Hopefully Elayne will be able to lower the level of mistrust he seems to have towards everyone he doesn't know. In the meantime...>

Keshin glances at Terenia and states, "Do you know if there's any place a Yeerk can eat in the Bar? We've been here a while now. I'm starting to get a little peckish. Or do I have to go all the way out to my ship?" Keshin says with a slight grin. Although I do need to pay a visit to it, given our weapon's current state.

Mar watches Trey closely as he attempts to explain his situation. The boy is not lying, which can only mean... Mar then says calmly, "I am the person with the weakest link to your problem, given that I am not a Controller and I am not human. The form that you see is something that I made for short-term convenience, though I have ended up using it..." Mar smirks. "...a bit longer than expected. However, these people are not trying to trick you. They are merely from a different variation of Earth than your own."

Mar gestures with his gauntlet hand at the air in the Bar itself. "Here in this place, numerous universes intersect with one another. The result of this is that people from one reality and time can meet people from another inside this Bar. Assume then that no one here has any idea what you are talking about beyond the concept of Yeerks, the Yeerk Empire, and nothlits...and explain."

Terenia shrugs again, "last time I tried to feed I ended up being held hostage with my host running amok. That was in one of the portable pools Myitt and Corliss had. I tried to feed in my own pool on the ship too. That also turned out badly. So...yeah, I guess your best bet is your ship, unless the bartender can whip anything up."

----

Trey looks blank for a moment, as though Mar's words make no sense. His eyes begin to trail towards the dead body, but he stops himself. At first he focuses on Mar, but for some reason that makes him feel even more uncomfortable. Instead he shifts his gaze to Elayne and finds himself comforted.

"The NAT was put in place about thirty years ago, after a whole bunch of nothlits caused problems. It was supposed to be to make them better acclimated to life on Earth. That was the cover, at least. Really, it was just an excuse for the Andalites and humans in power to control everything," the way Trey spoke was casual, as though this were not so much an outrage as it was every day life, "Most of the Yeerks ended up as some sort of animal after the war was lost, but some were able to become human. No Andalites, of course. They're too proud for that."

Trey pauses to touch the gauze on his forehead again, wincing at the pain, "anyhow, the Yeerk nothlits got older, eventually some of them had kids. That's me, one of the 'grubs' as society so affectionately calls us."

Elayne held Treyliss's gaze as he spoke, her frown deepening as she listened. "That's terrible. Yeerks should be given the right to live as their own species with their own unique qualities just like humans or Andalites. That's xenocide; it's something I have been trying to prevent for a while, but... well, I'm sorry to see it happen in your world," she said quietly.

Her hand, nails dark with dried blood beneath, lifted to tug his back from the gauze on his forehead. "Don't fiddle with it, alright? I'll clean and disinfect it next time I change the bandage, but for now, let me mop the floor. I'm afraid if I wait much longer, the bartender will kill me with his glare." She smiled as if she were joking, but she could feel his gaze on the back of her head, and it was starting to make the fine hairs on her neck stand on end. "Do you want any more water, Trey?"

((We love Corliss. He needs a hug. :p))

Keshin nods and turns away from Terenia, seeing her point immediately. "You're probably right. I need to do something out there anyway. But before I go...how in the world did you manage to get screwed over inside your own ship? Did your host decide now was the time to run free as a bird or something? I thought there were countermeasures for that."

Keshin laughs and then begins to walk towards the Bar's entrance. <Poor thing always seems to run into bad luck.>

<She ain't too different from us, then.>

<True, true. But at least she's not going to die in seven years.>

<Gives you a brand new outlook on life, don't it?>

Mar rolls his eyes. "What a bunch of arrogant bureaucrats. Attempting to eliminate an entire species does no one any good but me. But what I'm wondering is, why on Earth have you been given a Yeerk name? You would think that a repressive organization would...avoid promoting Yeerk culture and interests." Mar gets a slight smirk on his face at this thought. He had always been very fond of such realities.

"And I suppose the more important question is...what do you have to fear? As the essentially human child of a Yeerk nothlit, they shouldn't have anything against you. Unless this has something to do with the bizarre human fixation on heritage."

Trey nods, both in response to Elayne and Mar. He reaches over to his left arm and pulls up the sleeve of his work uniform, revealing a quite beautifully intricate tattoo, that resembled the English letter 'Y' ever so slightly.

"They like to keep track of us," Trey says, "dad says -" he halts, takes a breath and restarts, "dad said it was because humans are a naturally hateful species, and that they look for people to cast out of society so that they feel better about themselves. As for my name..." Trey sighs, pulling his sleeve back into place, making sure that the shirt cuff covers the tattoo entirely.

"The Yeerks never wanted this," he says simply, "people have told me my entire life that I am not really a human, that I should not exist. Humans and Andalites alike distrust me because of my parents. Why should I embrace a race that hates me? I guess my parents felt the same way when they named me Treyliss."

Elayne turned and walked to the bar, requesting another glass of water. At the bartender's deadpan stare, she sighed. "I'm going to clean up the mess right now. And I'll take the dead guy out and bury him soon. Just let me deal with the live kid first, alright?" The bartender, of course, said nothing, but filled and slid to her a (exceedingly grimy) cup of tap water. "Thanks," Elayne responded a little testily.

She brought the water to Trey along with a mop from the broom closet where she had found the shovel earlier. Handing the cup to him, and watching him as he covered the tattoo on his arm, she got to work cleaning up his vomit on the floor and the blood that was pretty much everywhere between the door and the two men--one dead and one still alive.

Keshin sighs and pushes open the door, walking out into the asteroid's cool air. Everything from pointless Bar fights to interdimensional monsters ripping apart the fabric of space and time has passed through this area. Yet somehow it hasn't changed in years. Keshin shrugs, swinging his arms back and forth in the night. He then glances off. <Huh. So there's that weird kid's crashed spaceship.>

<He picked a lousy place for a landin'.>

<It's not like he was trying to get here. Nobody is. Let's get to that ship. Gonna be a long walk, Joanne. We're not blitzing this time either.>

Keshin then sets off through the grass in the direction of his ship. He's never fully understood why an asteroid with barely an atmosphere would be so...habitable.
*******************************************************************************Mar nods quietly. "So your name is a form of rebellion, then. Better to identify with the people who care about you than the people who don't. But what I want to know is..."

Mar begins to "pace" around the room lightly and then stops, folding his hands behind his back. "...if they're trying to keep track of you, they seem to be failing. You're in the absolute middle of nowhere, and crashed in what obviously isn't the universe's best ship. You have been...running away, have you? How has that little escapade been going?"

Trey grimaces and gestures to the body of his dead father on the floor, "not very well, I guess," he admits, taking the water with a small nod of thanks from Elayne.

"The plan was...well, the plan was kind of stupid, I thought. But I went along with it because I wanted to get away from Earth," Trey shrugs  a bit, but then winces as his head throbs, "My father wanted us to go to the Homeworld and see if there were any Yeerks still around. There's been rumors. Then we were going to snag them and start a revolution. 'Reclaim our glorious species before it dies off forever', that's what my father always said."

Elayne disappeared into the bathroom in the back, cleaning out the mop and washing her hands, scraping the dried blood out from under her stubby fingernails. She figured she would bury Trey's father later, perhaps next to her pilot or some other spot of the boy's choosing. Unfortunately, very little of this place was particularly picturesque.

She wondered if Mar could remove dirt from the ground to form a grave the same magical way he had lifted himself or the metal that had been crushing Trey. Abruptly, she snorted. Her eyes looked amused when she met them in the mirror over the sink. A day ago, she never would have claimed to believing in magic, yet here was constant evidence of it, as surely as there had been evidence of aliens living secretly on her planet and in her home so many years ago. "Never say never," she parroted what she remembered had been one of her mother's favorite phrases.

The thought of Mar made her smile as well, but conscious of her almost-giddy expression thanks to the mirror, she relaxed her face muscles. So you like him, she told herself. No reason to act a fool. And besides, he's creepy. Remember?

With a sigh, she put her freshly-cleaned hand on the bathroom's doorknob and opened the door.

The trip takes a bit longer than expected. Keshin and Joanne reach the shipyard a bit out of breath due to all the walking. Keshin grasps at his shirt and fingers around in his pockets, eventually locating the device that lowers his Bug fighter's ramp. He then presses the button and eventually walks up the ramp, touching a light. <Home sweet home, Joanne.>

<We spend too many hours a day already on this rustbucket. Let's hurry up and get to that pool.>

<Oh come on. You know we just love this piece of crap.>

<Look, just..hurry it up.>

Keshin then pushes open the door to the pool room and clicks a button beside the portable pool itself. "Well, here goes." He then kneels near the edge of the pool and slowly slithers out of Joanne's head. Joanne wipes her ear with her hand, groaning. "Dammit, Kess. This is always so icky." But he can no longer hear her.
*******************************************************************************
Mar laughs out loud in a rather mocking fashion. It's not a pretty sound. "Oh my. So the great Yeerk race wants to bring itself out from the darkness! Looks like some old propaganda-fed fools still can't accept that they've lost. Well, whatever. Your plan was foolish and probably aroused the ire of those you were trying to escape from in the first place."

Mar then turns to Trey with a slight glance to the side. "But luckily...you are here now. In a place where no one will ever find you if they don't know where to look. What do you intend to do with such a situation?"

Trey looks merely confused by the question, "what do you mean...do...about the situation?" He shifts himself forward on the table, forcing his gaze upon the body of his father, "I don't know what I'm going to do. I guess...I guess I'm going to find a way home. I don't have anywhere else to go, and I can't finish the mission alone. I guess...I don't..." he falters, looking utterly at a loss.

--

Terenia watches Keshin go, swirling her drink as she does so.

"This place is starting to wear on me," she mutters into her glass.

<Perhaps you should leave,> Efaen suggests.

<Shut it, you just want me to get blown to smithereens by that Andalites Dome Ship. No thanks.>

Elayne reemerged into the Bar, making her way past  empty tables and chairs to where Mar and Trey were still speaking. The poor boy looked so lost, she sighed. "How are you feeling?" she asked once she reached the table where he sat, standing beside Mar.

Her gaze fixing on the bandage on his head, she wondered how much longer she would be able to go without changing it. He's helpless, she thought as she watched him. No father, no ship to speak of, no supplies or money most likely. Poor kid.

She glanced to Mar, and was surprised to find his expression was not as sympathetic as her own, but then shook herself, surprised that she had been surprised, given what she knew of him. It seemed he truly did only care for her, Ossanlin, and Myitt, just as he had said.

Trey shrugs, "I feel like crap, honestly," he says, sipping the water that Elayne has given him. He stares at the corpse with a mixture of dulled horror and fascination. It helps that the body is so lacerated that it is semi-unrecognizable.

"I just can't believe he's gone..." he says, swallowing the lump that is forming in his throat. He turns his attention away and back to Mar's original question, "I guess I can't go home, can I? I'm a runaway. We weren't exactly allowed to commandeer a spacecraft and jump to Z-space with a course set for the Yeerk Homeworld. That's kind of a big no-no for us."
