"The extinction of the Yeerk race as it exists now, yes," says Myitt.  "I'm not saying I'd agree with it, but it isn't as if we'd all be completely dead.  Our personalities would live on.  It's only...well, the Yeerk culture, as it were, our way of life...after a few generations, it would probably cease to exist.  I can't see there being Yeerkish holidays or a Yeerkish religion kept up."  She smiles a bit at the thought.  "But names, language, decency, when we're lucky...the good parts of us.  Sure, why not?"  She shakes her head.  "I'm sure most Yeerks would never accept that as an option.  They would rather die.  I'm not even sure if I'd want to do it.  But it is an interesting question, to say the least.  I think even the humans would be more accepting of such an idea.  A sort of permanent Yeerkish citizenship.  Who knows."

Thordon sits quietly listening and learning. Out of misunderstanding, he asks, "Why not find one species that would welcome you, and stick with them?"

Ossanlin nods a bit.  <I suppose it would effectively eliminate the kandrona dependency.  But the radical evolution of an entire species in a matter of months...it would be a bit like playing God as the humans would say.  I don't know how the Ellimist would respond, but I doubt Crayak would be all that happy.>  Ossanlin swivels a stalk-eye at Breek.

<You don't think the Yeerks would lose all sense of personal identity?  Do you think they'd remain apart, not mingling or blending with their chosen species?  I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to find a class M planet to support life...it would be a bit interesting I suppose...hork-bajir, humans, taxxons, gedd, andalites...all living in the same place, the same society, and all Yeerks by heritage.  Though some wouldn't be possible...taxxons for example...hive mind and all, but I doubt many would choose to remain a taxxon for their entire lives.  I don't suppose many would choose gedd either.  I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to find enough forest, plains land, and farming and urban development sites on the same planet.  Either it would be a great melting-pot, or a segregated mess leading to conflict and self-identity crises.>

<Whether Yeerks continued to call themselves Yeerks or not, and whether they would be justified in doing so really isn't the primary factor.  This type of radical evolution would completely change the core Yeerk civilization, the very way of life.  One might be justified in saying that the new Yeerks would be an entirely different species, much as the ancient Earth lizards are a different species than current Earth avians.  Though one could say they are the same creature that has simply changed over time.  The target question is do we really have the mental judgement power or the moral and ethical authority to do such a thing?>  Ossanlin swivels a stalk-eye to look at Thordon as he speaks, leaving Myitt to explain the situation as she could do it much better...after all, she experienced it first-hand on a day to day basis.

Breekan shrugs. "Pop's never happy. The best you can hope for is his disinterest, but I think that ship's sailed for the Yeerk-Andalite scuffle." He scratches his chin. "I'm pretty sure there are some rules or something to keep them from getting too heavy-handed, though I can't imagine he's too pleased to follow someone else's rules. It might not be wise to give him an excuse to cut loose- one can lose a perfectly good galaxy that way."

Mar laughs a bit at Breekan's comment. "That's quite true. Crayak was never the sort of person that accepts compromises, which I think is actually rather foolish of him. There are beautiful advantages to making another person think that you're conceding some defeat for a while. I have several times on different worlds, while slowly distorting the world being created by my opposition. This is quite, quite easy to do in universes where there are human beings. I admit a certain fondness of the species myself. Whether or not actually being fallible and mortal a while appeals to me is something I'm trying to work out. It has allowed me to find a friend of sorts here."

Mar then glances off. "As for what you're suggesting about the Yeerks...I could never personally support such a thing. This is because it might actually work. If the world you're suggesting merely breeds further discontent and confusion in the following centuries, then I have little problem with a change of situation. But if it does exactly what everyone here would hope and destroys the need for conflict in the species, then I do have a problem. Of course, it will be up to Breekan and Shal's demented father to handle that fallout. This dimension is not really my problem, anyway. Except in how it relates to Myitt."

"In answer to your question, Thodol, most species have problems with Yeerks in their heads because we have the ability to completely dominate them. I don't like using the word, but we are parasites. The host of a Yeerk has p;ractically nothing in the way of keeping a Yeerk in line. Because of this, the only species that would wholeheartedly accept Yeerks is one that was created to be a host. Our people could have done that with the Arn, who could create such hosts, but in the current Visser Three's "genius" he decided they would make better target practice."

Thordon looked quizzically at Temrash, "Who's Thodol, have you forgotten my name so quickly?

"Just because you have the ability to 'dominate' other races, doesn't mean you should dominate other races. I have the ability to do many things, but because it encroaches upon others' lives, I do not.

"Just because you haven't met a spieces that wouldn't welcome your inhabitance yet doesn't mean there isn't one out there. You could find race of beings that are more than happy to play host. But I suppose the intoxicating taste of 'power' would be too much to give up for your spieces. It's sad really, a civilation built on destruction has only destruction for a reward."

"I think that would depend," says Myitt.  "It could easily become a segregated mess on a planet comprised entirely of Yeerk nothlits of one or more species, or conversely, it could work quite well.  That all depends on the willingness of the participants, and the ability and compassion of the society's leadership to govern and advise its citizens, naturally.  In other words, something better than what we've got now."  She glances at Mar.  "If anything, it might breed further conflict rather than absolve it completely."

She sighs, exasperated.  "Of course we don't have the authority to wipe out the genetic and cultural history of any race, that's an enormous part of why I don't really like the Yeerk Empire, itself.  It regularly attempts to reduce alien races to cultural and natural genetic stagnation.  However, keep in mind that I really can't foresee all Yeerks choosing this morphing option, or having it forced upon them.  There are millions of Yeerks on the homeworld, I doubt the Andalites would grant all of them the morphing power and oversee all of them becoming stuck in a morphed body.  There would be too great a risk for someone, somewhere, to use that power to his advantage.  And not all Yeerks would want it.  There are many Yeerks who have never taken a host, let alone morph another body completely, and despite the pressures of our society some of us simply will never want to.

"As Temrash has said, Thordon, the idea of creating suitable artificial hosts isn't new.  But due to our government's obsession with conquest, it's never gained enough favor, and resources for such research have been diverted toward the war effort.  Some individuals within host species, such as Temrash's host, Shal's back in the day, and mine and Corliss', have certainly agreed to our shared control in a more mutual, enjoyable environment for both the Yeerk and the host body."

<Speak for yourself,> jokes Tara dryly.

"I doubt an entire species would invite Yeerk infestation, unless there were some real benefit, such as with the Taxxons; even they have rebels among them.  Maybe someday we can figure a way to engineer a species that would be a true biological symbiote, or to make an agreement with an entire host species that would be much less one sided.  But that is also what my subfaction of Yeerks fights for, as my friends are already aware.  We are part of a rebellion in a civil war that disagrees with encroaching upon others' lives, as much as we can.  We disagree with the Empire's policy of mandatory, involuntary infestation."

She grins a bit.  "Wow, we've really gone over some deep social mores, haven't we?"

Thordon smiles, "Well, to properly explain a situation, sometimes delving into deep conversation is necessary. Though comedy can educate as well as entertain, seriousness is always the best way." Thordon winks at Myitt.

"Well," Thordon replaces the now empty mug on the bar, "I'd like another, please."

The BT looks Thordon dead in the eye, puts down the mug he was drying, and raises an upturned palm to Thordon.

Thordon looks confused, "What?"
