We finished demorphing, and I answered as soon as I had proper vocal chords.

"Mom would be crushed if she knew about Alistair and the Yeerk. Just...no. We cannot tell her the truth. We also can't give away Leah's location, since Mom doesn't know about the tunnels, or the fact that most nights I should've been sleeping, I've been spelunking down there. Not gonna' happen."

Alistair nodded in agreement.
"Let's get this show on the road. Ais, do I look suitably upset?"

"You're perfect, brother. Go save our mother's sanity."

"Yes, SIR!"
Alistair gave a theatrical salute and headed for the patio door.

Once he was inside, I opened the cellar door and started down the stairs. I turned and looked up at Edward.
"If you stay here, I'll bring you some food. I'll give you enough to take some back to Leah. The canteen'll be empty by now."

I resumed my descent and dug into our basement pantry, where we kept snacks and where I hid all my extra gear for cave-exploration. I found a half-loaf of wheat bread, two granola bars and two apples, some potato chips and cheetos, and a roll of deer sausage, the kind that stays good even if you don't keep it cold. I grabbed them and four bottles of water, shoved them into a spare backpack, and climbed back up. On the way I snatched a flashlight off the nearest shelf.

I held the bag and the flashlight out to Edward.
"There's enough food for you and Leah for tonight and the morning. Don't turn on the light until you are well underground, or someone might see you. The bag is easy enough for a wolf to carry, I think, if you are careful about it. The nearest tunnel is this way."

I picked my way down the western slope of our back yard, counting my steps in the darkness as we passed into the woods. Thirty-five...forty...there! A springy pile of pine boughs marked the door. I pulled them up to reveal a man-sized hole in the ground.

"It's a six-foot drop, but there are ledges for toe-holds. Take it slow and follow your nose. Leah should be in the tunnel that smells like pine, smoke, and ashes. If you smell lavender or cinnamon, you are going the wrong way. Any questions? I gotta' run, so talk fast."

(I'm confused. Is this happening the morning after the day of the battle at the zoo, or the night of the day of the battle at the zoo?)

"Alright, I got it" I said. I morphed back into a wolf (doing that very much lately), and grabbed the bag that Ais had.

<See you later.> I said, and I made my way into the cave, trying to smell smoke.

I spun around, fighting back panic. There was no time to morph. I could already hear their footsteps echoing throughout the tunnels. If I morphed, they would find me before I had a chance to finish. And that would make them suspicious. Was it better to simply give myself away and pretend to be innocent? No, no, they would ask questions, whoever they were. And if they were Controllers... They wouldn't need to ask questions.

I ducked down behind a tall rock jutting out of the cave floor, barely managing to squeeze myself into such a narrow space. Seconds later, I heard someone enter the tunnel. A beam of light swept over the floor, to the left, and to the right. I prayed silently that I was low enough. The light stopped at my rock. No, no, no. Dread stabbed at my stomach, and my heart stopped as I anticipated the sound of their approach. But, just as quickly as they had come, the woman left, shouting, "It was nothing. You're just paranoid!"

When I was sure she was gone, I released a sigh of relief and slid out from behind the rock. I was safe.

"So, you think.............. ...... And he would.............. ..... Pool. The back.............."

I listened carefully, catching tiny snippets of conversation. I jerked at the word "pool".

"Scent........ Human.......... Alistair..... Edward.......... Others............. Unidentified."

I didn't understand what they meant. It was obvious that they were Controllers—why else would they have mentioned Alistair and Edward? But what did scent have to do with anything? And what did they mean by “others”?

You’d better get yourself out of here before your curiosity gets you into even more trouble.

I turned around and began to head back. Maybe I would find my way. Maybe I wouldn’t. I just hoped I would before the two Controllers decided to leave.

(Sorry for being gone for so long. Family get-togethers have obstructed my web-time.)

Edward vanished into the caves, and I shifted the brush to hide the mouth of the tunnel. As quickly as I could in the dark, I ran back to the house and snuck back in. I caught snippets of shouted conversation in the living room, followed by a sudden "Oh." of surprised understanding.

"I guess that that...changes things. I'm sorry for yelling at you, Ali. I was SOOO worried."
"It's okay, Mom."

I stepped off the stairwell and made myself visible.
"Mom, I'm sorry we weren't home, but-"
"It's okay. Alistair has explained it all. It must have been some wreck, to stop the buses running."
"Yeah. It was." I looked at Ali out of the corner of my eye, but his expression gave away nothing, it was so sincere and apologetic.
Beautiful little demon, my brother. He sure could be handy in a pinch, though.

"Hey, Mom? I'm REALLY tired. I'm gonna' go to bed now, okay?"
"Okay. Get some rest. You've had a long couple of days."
I nodded and dashed upstairs to my room, where I had stashed some snacks. I chowed down on some Cheetos, a banana, and a can of Dr. Pepper, replenishing lost energy with raw calories. Once I felt full, I turned off my light and opened my window. I morphed the owl that I'd acquired, wheeled once over the house to tell Alistair where I'd be, and disappeared into the night.

After a five-minute flight, I was above the farthest edge of the tunnel system. I landed and demorphed, remorphing to cougar. The cat was perfect for cave exploration, even more so than my original house-cat morph. I jogged to the entrance and crawled in, searching for the branch that would take me most quickly to Leah and Edward.

(Gotta' go now. Good evening.)

My heart was pounding. I really was lost. For the past ten minutes I'd been wandering through the tunnels, trying to get as far from the voices as possible. Finally out of earshot, I had assumed I was getting closer to the cave. I soon realized that I had walked even further into the tunnel system.

Now, sitting up against the cold, rough tunnel wall, I began to ponder my situation. I was lost. I had no food or water. And I was completely alone with only three morphs, all of which were useless to me at the moment. Perfect. But, someone would find me eventually, right?

I looked ahead, wondering what direction I was facing. A sudden movement caught my attention, and I leaned forward, straining to see in the complete darkness. "Who's there?" I demanded, struggling to steady my voice. I reached out, and, surprisingly, felt soft fur brush my fingertips.

(So, this can be either Edward or Ais, since the animals they morphed have fur. Whoever posts first, I guess.)

I took a tunnel that lead me on a fairly direct path to Leah's hideout, and I was surprised to find that she had inadvertently moved toward me.

<It's me, Ais. You're gonna' have to learn to navigate this place before you start wandering around, Leah. Grab my tail and I'll lead to to a flashlight.>

I turned so that she'd have an easy time finding my four-foot-long tail.

I sighed with relief. "Sorry about that," I said, reached out and grabbing onto what I assumed was Ais's tail. She began to walk. I held on tightly and followed behind, trying not to fall over as I did.

"Ais, we have a Yeerk problem. Here and now," I whispered softly, wondering why had waited to tell her.

<What?! In the tunnels?! Oh, mind your step right...here.>

I opened my senses, and I could smell Leah behind me, but off to the far left...someone else. Not a familiar smell. I could also distantly smell a wolf. Edward, either recently, or from the last time we were here. I called to him as loudly as I could, without letting the strangers hear.

<Edward, there are Controllers down here. Watch out!>

I carefully guided Leah down a side tunnel, and my dream returned to me in a rush.

<Leah, do you remember that huge cavern? The Big One where we first ran into Alistair? I think that it is time to go back there. Now. There may...there will be a fight, I believe. If you want to bail, tell me now, and I'll get you out of here.>

I had followed the scent of pine and smoke, just like Ais had told me to, and I stumbled upon the room I noticed earlier... empty. I softly whined a bit, and started sniffing, seeing if I could find Leah's scent. The main smell, other than the aforementioned ones, wasn't Leahs, but it was a smell that I knew well... the smell of a Kandrona Pool. All thoughts fled, and I walked towards the smell, hoping that Leah and Ais haven't been captured yet.

I heard Ais' response, but I wasn't sure whether or not she had been made a Controller yet. <Are you serious!? That sucks! Where are you headed?> I asked, not knowing what else to do.

<Edward! Good, you're here! I'm headed for the Big One, that gigantic cavern. Do you remember it? That is, if Leah agrees to come along. Otherwise, I'm getting her safely out of here.>

<Yeah, I remember it.> I said, wary of my thoughts. <I'm headed there right now. What's going on with the Yeerks?>

<Why? Oh, by the by, when you enter the cavern...watch out for falling objects. Also, please DON'T ask my why. Just watch out.>
