(Okay, I think I can come back in now. There was a huge thunderstorm today.)
I woke with a start, jerked upright. My body was soaked with sweat, despite the cold, and my heart thudded in my chest so quickly I thought it would burst. I could feel my hands shaking. I could still hear the lion running behind me, panting wildly and excitedly, preparing to make the kill. I could still feel my legs give out underneath me as I tripped on the forest floor. I could still hear the lion's triumphant laughter as he stared down at the pathetic, cowering little girl--me.
"I am not a coward!" I had protested. But he proved me wrong, and stepped aside to reveal the mangled and nearly unrecognizable bodies that belonged to my friends. In the dream, I had abandoned them and run away when they needed my help. I had ignored their pleading cries and tried to save myself.
"Oh, god, what if they're really dead!" I shouted to myself, cupping a hand over my mouth in horror. Get a grip. It was only a dream. You're just paranoid, I mentally reassured myself. I slid back into the sleeping bag and closed my eyes. Slowly, I began to drift further and further from consciousness. The sound of voices startled me back to full awareness.
At first, I thought I had only imagined the voices. But I heard them again. And then again. I was too far away to understand what they were saying, but clearly, they were coming from deeper into the cave. I climbed out of the sleeping back and silently crept alongside the wall and into the nearest tunnel, making certain that I was on solid, stable ground before each step. I walked for at least three minutes. The further into the cave I walked, the louder the voices became.
I wasn't sure where I was walking, or better yet, why. Something was drawing me closer. An unseen force, calling to be, pulling me further and further from the mouth of the cave and deeper into the heart of the underground city. Deeper and deeper into the darkness. What the hell is wrong with you? Go back now! I continued to walk, my heart beating faster with every step I took. I could hear the voices much better now, almost well enough to understand what they were saying. I could tell that one of them was female, and the other was male.
"Ais? Edward?" I called loudly. There was no reply. What if they're Yeerks? Stupid, stupid, stupid, you have to get out of here. I forced myself to turn away and head back. I thought I wouldn't have any difficulty getting back to the cave. I was wrong. I started off in the right direction. As I walked, the voices grew quieter. But then they grew louder again, and I realized I'd walked in a circle. "How could you be so stupid?" I scolded myself, sinking down against a wall in defeat.
"Think I heard something..." My heart stopped. Someone had heard me.
